SLCDunk on ESPN
The season preview for the Jazz is up on ESPN now. They asked me to write a response to this question in 90-100 words,
Jazz down one, 9.2 seconds to play, must-win game. What's the play?
And here's my response,
When the season is on the line, the question shouldn't be, "Who do you want taking the last shot?" It should be, "Who wants to take that shot?"
Deron Williams is that man. The best play for the Jazz isn't a set out-of-bounds play. It's to inbound the ball to Williams and let him create the winning shot. By not letting the defense set up, Williams has the advantage. He can drive for the layup, kick it back out, or fake the drive and knock down the cross-over, step-back jumper. But either way, he's already beaten you.
What's your play?

DWill is da man but...
I see some sort of pick and fade with Memo, then the play breaks down and the ball ends up in Korver’s hands who pump fakes, tries to draw a foul…and misses. Here’s hoping this year will be different.

dwill drives...
kicks it back out to boozer, who runs over his defender and gets called for the charge. the other team gets the ball and the win.

First of all.
Sloan would want to call a timeout, but when he saw Deron racing up the court after a missed or made basket by the other team, he would let it go. Deron would go as far as he could and if he didn’t have the shot, he could sling it outside to Korver or Okur for a 3 pointer. I know we only need two, but your best shot is your best shot. I saw this happen two years ago against Seattle and Last year vs. Philadelphia, both in the ESA.

That was my thought.
I didn’t put in that the inbounds would be after a missed/made bucket.

I was thinking
The Cleveland coast-to-coast game last year at the ESA.

That was a great last second bucket too.
Good Call.

There was also the game from two years ago against Milwaukee.
Redd scored 57 or 51 on us and hit the go ahead jumper with like 4 seconds left and instead of calling a time out, we inbounded it to D will who drove the length of the floor to find Harpring for the buzzer-beating layin. It is just pretty standard now, that we don’t call a timeout.

i agree obviously you want the ball in d-will’s hands
there are many options he can go with – find Korver, pick & pop Memo, pick & roll Booze

or d-will could just take it himself, which is never a bad thing

Shaq
I want the ball in Shaq’s hands with Collins guarding him. Collins is a decent free throw shooter, no?
Leave the ball, will you George?
