ESPN Mag- Paul vs. Williams
This article is pretty good and lays out the real dilimma between choosing these point guards. No surprises in the article. When forced to choose, not one group of insiders or one group of fans chose Williams over Paul, but reading the comments about the article, there are a lot of fans (and not all Jazz fans) that prefer Williams by a long shot.
You have probably already heard the one quote from Bill Simmons that is one-sided all the way. "Then Chris Paul fell out of the sky. He's a classier Isiah with a better jumper. We are blessed. Comparing him with Deron Williams is like comparing Pearl Jam to Stone Temple Pilots. Don't waste your time."
I am one of the biggest Bill Simmons fans around. I think he is hilarious and you have to admit that he knows the game pretty well. His biggest shortcoming is that he lets his judgment get clouded by his favorite teams and players. But don't we all. I know he said not to waste our time on the comparisons, but I actually think the Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots thing brings up an interesting point. At face value Pearl Jam does seem a lot better than STP. Pearl Jam's first album Ten is the best Pearl Jam album. It is one of the great albums of the 90's. But they have never matched it. The rest of their stuff has had great moments, but their latest music just doesn't quite cut it. STP's freshman album Core had some good songs, but didn't hold a candle to Ten, but as a fan of both bands, I have to say that STP's sophmore and third albums (12 Gracious Melodies and Tiny Music from the Vatican) equal Pearl Jam's vs and tops Vitalogy. I didn't mean to be a music critic on this post, but I think it is funny that Simmons tried to win his argument by comparing Pearl Jam and STP, because while Pearl Jam was quick out of the gate, the Pilots have had the latest good songs. It's Longevity or the last Laugh vs. the quick start. Pearl Jam's best might be better than STP's best, but over a career, Deron Williams may keep going up and getting better (minus the trips to rehab), while Paul will struggle to match the season that almost landed him the MVP.
All comments are the opinion of the commenter and not necessarily that of SLC Dunk or SB Nation.

Amen
And his comparison ticked me off (of course, it was probably meant to do that). Maybe he’ll be in attendance for the Clippers game (he has season tickets) for Deron’s return. I think I’ll email him this post and see if I can figure out D-Will’s email address and send it to him. He (Williams) used to have a message board, but the link is no longer on his page.

That quote confused me at first
because I’ve always thought STP was better than Pearl Jam. To each his own, I suppose.

TS Eliot said: “No poet, no artist of any sort, has his complete meaning alone.” It think the fundamental problem in comparisons is that stats don’t account for teammates. Hollinger trie the hardest to get reliable stats, but how do you account for the passes D-Will (or CP) makes that go through butter-fingers on the receiving end? Or more to the point, the systems in which they play?
If you put D-Will in NOLA and told him “dribble dribble dribble until you get a shot or an assist” his stats would be closer to Pauls. And if you put Paul in SLC and told him to pass to the wing, run through the lane and set picks… See what I mean? Everyone on the Jazz get assists, in NOLA, it’s essentially Paul with the ball. I wonder if Hollinger could get some stats on “points, assists, etc. divided by touches” instead of divided by minutes.
D-Will is still my favorite. I just hope he doesn’t get superstar greasing his mirror.
Leave the ball, will you George?

I’ll take Pearl Jam today. But when 10 came out, I was more into Soundgarden. It doesn’t matter though. When Rage Against the Machine came out, all comparisons ended there.
Back to Paul and Will. I think I would be completely happy if their relationship/comparisons go down in history the same as Wilt and Russell. Wilt was the best, Russell has the rings and always got the best of Wilt.
Leave the ball, will you George?
lol
I KNEW that comparison would bother you, Clark. I was waiting for you to say something about it.
I'll make it.
Simmons
He once wrote an article on how KG was the clear-cut MVP of the league….yet couldn’t even say without hesitation that he was the best player on his own team.
"I’m gonna rise up, gonna kick a little ass. Gonna kick some ass in the USA. Gonna climb a mountain, gonna sew a flag, gonna fly on an eagle. I’m gonna kick some butt, gonna drive a big truck. I’m gonna rule this world. I’m gonna kick some ass. I’m gonna rise up, gonna kick a little ass. Rock, flag, and eagle!"
