Around SBN: The Gift Of The 2003 Tigers

I. My brewing feud with Jazz fans. Because I keep dismissing the Chris Paul-Deron Williams "rivalry" and wrote last week that Paul was the Pearl Jam to Williams' Stone Temple Pilots, that earned me a steady stream of hate mail from Utah and an extended rip in something called the Deseret News. Look, people of Utah -- you ruined the 2002 Olympics because nobody could buy a stiff drunk or a beer that had a real level of alcohol, and I think "Last Call" was 8:30 at night. As my friend Jacoby jokes, "Each brewery around the world has to brew and bottle special low alcohol beer solely because Utah hates fun." It's true. The only reason we still put up with you is the skiing. I'd keep it down.

It's on. I guess we're out to start something with everyone this year. I sent him clarkpojos rebuttal, but he linked to the DesNews one instead.

His west standings,

WEST PLAYOFF TEAMS
1. Lakers, 66-16
2. New Orleans, 62-20
3. Utah, 53-29
4. Houston, 52-30
5. San Antonio, 48-34
6. Dallas, 47-35
7. Portland, 45-37
8. Phoenix, 43-39

Could be the case with Deron out for a couple. Does Bynum add 9 wins? He also had this trade possibility,

(My prediction if the Redd trade doesn’t happen: Wally, $3 million and a future No. 1 to Utah for Kirilenko, a move that clears enough cap space for Utah to pay Carlos Boozer and Paul Millsap next summer, and more importantly, gives the Jazz an unparalleled Cleancut White Guy Trifecta of Matt Harpring, Kyle Korver and Wally. Can’t you see those guys riding a ski lift together or crashing a raging Sundance party? I’m excited already.)

Interesting.

Hollinger and Beer in Utah

I wanted to comment on Hollinger’s article, but didn’t find any comment links there. Anyway, somebody needs to point out to Hollinger that, while yes, Utah does have some funny liquor laws, the beer really isn’t that much different there than it is in other, more normalized states, like here in Cali. Utah law states that beer can not be over 3.2% by weight whereas most everywhere else alcohol in beer is reported by volume. A 3.2 by weight, like those found in Utah, is not much different than a traditional Guinness. Yes, you heard me right. The Beer of Beers is only around 3.4% alcohol by weight.

A 3.2% by weight beer is the same as a 4.0 by volume one. Although many beers, especially microbrews have a higher ABV than 4.0, many more commercial beers do not. Again, Hollinger focuses so much on being clever and witty that he blows by the facts.

Oh, and anybody who was in SLC or environs during those amazing two weeks in Feb of 2002 and says that the event “was ruined” obviously is being rhetorical. I’ve been to a couple Olympics now, and the SLC games were as rowdy as they come and were generally acknowledged by attendees as being one of the best organized and most succesful Games in recent memory (and were talking Winter Games here, comparing Winter to Summer games is like comparing the Super Bowl to the XGames). If the guy was getting last calls at 8:30 like he says, it is probably just because the bartender got tired of his self-important ranting and decided to flush him out of their bar.

PS If you’re so worried about getting a slightly ‘lighter’ Michelob Light, order a shot of Jameson or just stay out of Utah. Thanks.

Excellent

And if I remember right, weren’t the beer laws relaxed for the Olympics? And although I’m no alcohol expert, aren’t there quite a few more states that are even crazier than Utah when it comes to liquor laws? Especially in the south I believe.

1300 S. State Street

Didn’t I give you a ride once as you staggered your way across 6 lanes of traffic on State Street? You were piss drunk.

(Don’t worry, I am sending this as a private message. Nobody will see. Your secrets are safe with me ;)

umm...what?

we shouldn’t complain about his terrible comparison because Utah has crazy liquor laws? I don’t see the connection. Wait, wait, I think I got it…

The Jazz play in Utah, everyone in Utah is a Mormon, Mormons are nuts and pass crazy laws, therefore, Jazz fans are not allowed to call him out for stupid comments. There it is!

Being a non-Mormon who does not live in Utah, can I say something to him? I think I should.
