SLC Dunk fantasy league: Who's in?

I've created a Yahoo fantasy basketball league, just for us SLC Dunkers. Rules are head-to-head, standard Yahoo scoring categories (FG%, FT%, 3PTM, PTS, REB, AST, ST, BLK, TO), standard Yahoo rosters (PG, SG, flex G, SF, PF, flex F, two C, two Util, three Bench).

I love to tinker, so I've put no limits on transactions or trades, and also made no waiver period; everyone's a free agent and can be added or dropped post-draft at your leisure. (If by popular demand, you'd prefer a waiver period or a limit on transactions, I might change it. I just enjoy the freedom of constantly optimizing my team, and it puts a premium on staying involved and paying attention to your roster so you can grab the best pickups the fastest.)

12-team limit at the moment, but I'll expand it if there's enough demand. Since the season has already started, we should get the ball rolling as soon as possible. So the live online draft is tentatively scheduled for this Sunday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m. MT, with play starting the next day.

If you're interested, leave a comment here and I will shoot you the league ID and password. If we need to invite others to fill out the league, we can do so, but I'd like to keep the league in the SLC Dunk family.

Let's do this.

All comments are the opinion of the commenter and not necessarily that of SLC Dunk or SB Nation.

I'll play and I will win.

I’m not really cocky, just hopeful.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

already invited, Clarky

if our football league is any indication, you’ll at least have me beat. You’re my kryptonite over there.

I'll make it.

I wanna play.

But, I don’t really know how to, so you’ll all have to help me.

And, I get KK on my team. No matter what.

happy to help, D

send an email to the email address in my profile on here, so I can send you an invite. And I’ll be glad to give you whatever advice you need. Unless you’re my opponent for the week. ;)

I'll make it.

Just a word of advice (you asked for it)...

Don’t take Korver #1. :)
You can get him much later, unless you come across some really homeristic Jazz fan.
Many leagues see him going undrafted, because other than 3-pointers & FT%, he doesn’t provide your team with much.

And no, I’m not just saying that so that you’ll pass on Korver and I can take him… :)

by UtesFan89 on Oct 29, 2008 11:11 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

What???

I HAVE to have KK on my team. I think that you really are just trying to steal him from me. Haha.

Sssshhhh

don’t spoil the secret. :)

Beginner

I’ll play, but I haven’t before, so I’ll need instructions or whatever. Having said that, I intend to win. :-)

Leave the ball, will you George?

no worries

Invite sent, and further details will be forthcoming in-league.

I'll make it.

by Shums on Oct 29, 2008 11:47 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

You probably will

It’s usually the noobs or those that don’t tinker with stuff too much that win, at least in the leagues I’m in. My won the league in my first year of fantasy football and haven’t won since.

by Basketball John on Oct 30, 2008 8:48 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Me too

I think I might like to play as well…historically I’ve not followed the NBA much, but I’m broadening my horizons. I’ve been lurking around here for a short while.

I won the first year I played fantasy baseball too…haven’t won since. Perhaps there’s hope for me…

"I quite agree with you," said the Duchess; "and the moral of that is -- 'Be what you would seem to be' -- or, if you'd like it put more simply -- 'Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise.'"

B.Kyle, Patrick

Your invites have been sent. Everyone else, make sure that you follow the link in the invite and give yourself a team name and everything., cuz I only see three of us in there right now. The draft won’t be till Sunday, but you need to make sure you’ve signed up and registered your team before then.

I'll make it.

Seven in

with two more pending response to their invites. (Where you at, BBJ?) That will make nine total. We have to have an even number or we can’t draft, so we need at least one more. But we can hold up to 20. Come on in, folks!

I'll make it.

UPDATE

Ten are in. B.Kyle, Utahmanami, still waiting for you to send me an email so I can invite you. (Actually, I think I already invited you, B.Kyle.)

Unless someone else is really desperate to get in, I’m going to lock the league at 12 by tomorrow.

Remember, log in to Yahoo on Sunday a few minutes before 6pm for the live draft. If you can’t be there, set your player rankings in advance, or the computer will pick for you, using Yahoo’s default rankings.

Awww, yeeeah.

I'll make it.

any tips for newbies?

Is it better to pick a guy that gets 12 points every night, or a guy who may get six or may get 18?

Someone suggested to me that I try to get the #2 scorer for OKC because whoeverthehellitis he’ll score points all year quietly.

Any tips like that, or is it stupid to give hints to competitors?

I’m suddenly recalling that phrase, “If you look around the room (blog) and can’t tell who the dummy is, it’s probably you.” Okay, before someone says, “Take Adam Morrison,” I retract my request for advice.

Leave the ball, will you George?

by MTN on Oct 31, 2008 8:59 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

No, it's really okay

I’m not the type to withhold advice, or give bad tips. This isn’t for money, and we’re not in Vegas. (If this was a Hold ’Em game, things might be different.)

Here’s the way scoring works: you’re matched up against another team in the league. You’re trying to beat him in a number of statistical categories — the person who wins the most categories “wins the game” for that week. So, you’re trying to draft a team that will perform well in all categories. This can affect the players you choose.

For example, let’s take Dwight Howard. Awesome player, excellent on the glass, good low-post scorer, very high field goal percentage due to his close proximity to the basket. However, he’s terrible at free throws. And since he takes a lot of free throws, but doesn’t shoot a good percentage, this will drastically reduce your FT% category for the week. So, you either have to be willing to take the hit, hoping the points, rebounds, blocks and FG% are more worth it, or you have to draft other players who shoot well from the line to compensate.

So it’s not always best to just pick the biggest names, if they have glaring weaknesses like this.

To your first question: consistency is almost always preferred. If you go for streaky performers, you’re going to get burned at some point. Better to deal with known quantities, and make intelligent adjustments as necessary.

Your friend isn’t wrong to tell you to look for scorers on bad teams. Often the go-to guy on a horrible team can be a fantasy stud, because he’s getting the most shot attempts and has the ball in his hands a lot. But that might also hurt your team FG% if he has an off week or a few tough matchups — he could have a 2-for-15 night against the Celtics, followed by a 3-12 night against the Pistons, and torpedo your points and FG% for the week. Then again, no one player will really have a HUGE impact on your whole team, unless he’s your #1 pick.

It’s all about drafting (or making good pickups, especially because there’s no penalty for transactions in this league) with your eye on the big picture. Balance your team, cover all your statistical bases, or make sure that the areas where you’re weak will be balanced out by other strengths. Don’t worry, it’s a long season and you’ll get the hang of it.

I'll make it.

One thing...

with D-Ho mentioned. There’s 2 real options.

1- Try to do well in all positions. This is doable, but you’ll have to avoid guys like D-Ho, Shaq, LeBron, Tony Parker, etc. (mostly all FT% here), or highly overcompensate (get Korver for FTs… just an example). Of course, doing that could also lead to some member of the league cursing you in her sleep (I think we know who I’m talking about). It’s doable (I know, because I have a team like that). You find guys that have well rounded games and are only weak in a couple of spots that you can fill later (FT% & FG% are hardest here, because you have to overcome someone’s bad night). Others can be easily filled… say you get Chris Paul #1, you don’t have to “compensate” for blocks, just pick someone later that’ll get his share. But if you take D-Ho in the first round, you’ll have to find someone later that can counter his bad FT shooting.

2- Dump a few categories. I have a team trying this too (just to test it out). I pretty much gave up FG% & FT% to start with, trying to get stronger at the other positions and not worrying about those 2. Risky, yes, but if it works, you’re set. I have guys to get me blocks, assists, steals, 3-pointers, points, and hopefully limit the turnovers. (My first team isn’t built like that, so Tyrus Thomas’ 2-17 night (!!!) tonight hurts big-time.)

Within that, there are some options. Some people will draft a “small” team, taking many guard/forwards and forwards that have eligibility at center… ceding things like blocks (& maybe rebounds) while racking up on assists, steals, 3-pointers, etc. Others will go big, stacking up on PF/C’s, and wings that have PG eligibility (like Joe Johnson) and maybe giving up assists to stack up on blocks & rebounds. It really depends on who your first pick ends up being.

Hope I didn’t confuse you too much.
