Breaking: Memo headed to Turkey
Just got a text from KFAN that Memo is headed to Turkey for a family emergency. No time table for his return. I'll update this as I find more on it.
Hopefully it's not something to major for Memo. Though usually you wouldn't be on a trans-Atlantic flight if it wasn't. Hope all goes well.
This road trip just got a little worse. Here's the text,
1320 KFAN has learned that Mehmet Okur is in Turkey for a family emergency. No time table has been set for his return.
UPDATE From thefansports.com,
Utah Jazz General Manager Kevin O’Connor announced today that the team has excused center Mehmet Okur to attend to a family illness in his native Turkey. There is no timetable for his return.
Update from Memo13.com (Thanks Moni),
Utah Jazz center Mehmet Okur's father Abdullah Okur has been sick for a long time now. His condition got worse about two weeks ago as he was taken into intensive care. However a few days ago he showed strong enough signs of recovering and that the doctors moved him to a normal hospital room. Yesterday his condition all of a sudden deteriorated and he was immediately taken back into intensive care once again. Memo was informed of his condition and today spoke with both coach Jerry Sloan and general manager Kevin O'Connor both of whom said that he should immediately go to be with his family. Memo is going to be on the first flight to Istanbul.

Great...
I hope that everything is ok for him and his family.
Deron,
Maybe now would be a good time to play through an injury??
Thanks.
P.S. WHO can even start at C now?? Because Flop is still ‘injured’ and KK2.0 probably shouldn’t.
This could be the start of a disastrous roadtrip.
Start praying guys.

Good luck Memo and family
I ain’t too worried about his departure. Boozer will probably start at 5 and AK will probably start at 4, or Millsap. It’ll give the “other” guys some burn and hopefully pay off in the end. This means we should see some Koufos and/or Fesenko. I like that idea.
Williams needs to take his time and I hope he doesn’t feel rushed to get back. I would rather lose games upfront and have a healthy Williams then rush to get Williams back and have him gimpy all season.
The Jazz’s next game is against the 76ers, so I think we will be alright having Memo gone.

I agree with you 100% about Deron
With the news that he’s going to start tonight, I am very worried that he could re-aggravate the injury and be out even longer.

I'm more worried
about my fantasy team this week without Memo. Boo-urns. Hope everything is okay with him, though. I’ll see what I can find out later today.

I just realized
how insensitive that sounded. Obviously, I’m more concerned about Memo’s family than my fantasy team. I meant I’m more worried about my fantasy team than the Jazz’s performance without him, because I think we’ll be fine.

Fess
Looks like Fesenko won’t be at the game against the ’6ers.

okay
So no Memo, no Fes, no Collins. I’ll be the first to say it.
Kevin Lyde. 10-day contract.

I second that.
And then, after 10 days, resign him for the season and get rid of Flop.

?
Was Flop ever fined or anything for the ‘golf cart accident’? It sounds a little fishy to me. Especially with the whole Monta Ellis situation…

Fesenko's problems with a visa come at a suspicious time. I cry conspiracy.
Too bad about Mehmet. I hope things get resolved. I wish Fesenko were around to get some time. But I vote that we give plenty of burn to Kosta Koufos. The guy has to play sometime. I also think this costs us 1-2 games on this trip. But hopefully it doesn’t matter in the long run. Okur might be the most unexpendable guy on the roster as of today, so this loss hurts the team, no doubt.

Man, this is a tough spot
Sloan’s going to have to do something he usually doesn’t do, either start a guy like AK or Millsap who usually comes off the bench, or start a rookie (meaning Kosta).
by Vromanite on Nov 10, 2008 4:13 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
I think Kosta will get the start
But we’ll see Millsap/Boozer/AK get extended minutes. Kind of like what’s happening with CJ right now.
The bigger question might be who the finishing five are right now. Looks like it will be Knight, Brewer, Korver, AK, Boozer?

i like that korver and brewer might be forced to play together (or to put it more correctly, that jerry will be forced to play them together).
but in the absence of memo, jc, and fess, booz and sap will have to play the C. both are undersized and foul prone. kk2, i’m guessing will also be foul prone. uh oh.

Fes' chance
If Memo is out longer than Fes, someone needs to get in Fes’ face and say, “Look, Joker, now is your chance to be a man. Get out there and let everybody know you are bigger and badder than they are! Do you want to be the next Ostertag or the next Shaq?” If it was me, then I’d kick him in the zipper and scream at him to grow a pair and get up and fight me. I know he has the ability to be big in the paint, but he needs the fire. Regardless, here’s his chance. I say Memo’s absence (if prolonged) makes or breaks Fes.

I don't think there is any question.
That Sloan starts Millsap at the center like he did last year in Memo’s absence and brings Koufos off the bench first.

not true
From Tim Buckley at the Deseret News:
As a result, Sloan spent Monday contemplating lineup possibilities.
He could start undersized backup power forward Paul Millsap alongside All-Star power forward Carlos Boozer, or open with 2004 All-Star Andrei Kirilenko at power forward and Boozer at center.
Those options, however, seemed less to Sloan’s liking than another.
“If I start Andrei or Paul,” he said, “then I’m limited with the number of people I have available to try to finish the game — especially with fatigue and that sort of thing.”
With that in mind, early indications were that if Collins is unavailable as expected, Sloan might instead start rookie Kosta Koufos in the middle.
Ready, or not.
“Any young player’s not,” Sloan said. “They need opportunity to play.”
Welcome to center stage, Kosta.
(that link should be live in a few minutes if it isn’t already.)

But according to the SLTribune
The Jazz and Fesenko’s representatives are feverishly working to reschedule his visa meeting so that he can start on Tuesday.
“Jazz coach Jerry Sloan’s preference would be to start Fesenko, not Kosta Koufos, against Philadelphia’s Samuel Dalembert. Fesenko’s camp thinks the opportunity is too important to miss and hopes to reschedule the appointment for another couple of weeks.” Ross Siler’s Blog

I hope they work that out
Koufos is ultimately more like Okur – a big who likes the perimeter. Fes could become the interior presence we need. I’m not terribly hopeful, given his last year or so. But I agree with the “Fesenko Camp” that this opportunity is too important to miss.
