Complete Coverage >

The Jazz look tonight to provide the same whooping on the Kings that they gave last week at the ESA.

The bad news is that the Jazz don't win in SacTown that much.  They're 1 for their last 6.  On the plus side, the Kings can't seem to win at home either.

Boozer and AK will sit this one out again.  Kevin Martin is expected to make his debut.  He's always killed us.  But Salmons could be out.

Salmon_kings_medium

I don't expect the blowout like the last game.  First of all, we're on the road.  Second, we're without AK.  Martin is back.  He'll be coming off the bench, so he may not be as effective as he has been in the past.

I still expect the Jazz to to win comfortably.

Salmons/ Martin

Have to be contained. I don’t expect either one to be on top of their game, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a huge effect on the game. The good news is that at no time will we see Harp on Salmons- we all know what kind of massacre that turns into.

The Jazz need to be aggressive on the perimeter when Martin, Gomez, or Salmons are camped out there. I know its “gimmicky” but trapping on the pick and roll will cause a lot of turnovers (see: the last Kings/ Jazz game). Beno doesn’t have the best ball handling skills and is TO prone anyway.

If Memo is shooting well and the Brew/ CJ combo are aggressive this could be a much needed win.

come on

I hate late game times. I’m bored to tears at work and I need some ball already.

not to mention

a late start time means a late finish time, which makes my work harder. Bah.

Just curious (but yes, kinda off topic)

did LHM say he wasn’t going to go over the luxury tax limit? Or was it the salary tax (which is total BS by the NBA) limit?

by UtesFan89 on Dec 2, 2008 7:31 PM MST reply actions

luxury tax, not salary cap

The Jazz are already over the salary cap, if I remember rightly. Larry said he would not exceed the luxury tax threshold.

For the benefit of those who aren’t aware (I’m assuming UtesFan is), there is a gap between the so-called “soft” salary cap, and the luxury tax threshold. After a team hits the salary cap, they can’t sign additional free agents, except under specific exceptions, such as the “Larry Bird” exception, for players who have been with that team for at least three consecutive years, or the “midlevel” exception, equivalent to the average player salary in the league.

Click here for the definitive NBA salary cap FAQ. There’s a TON to understand about the cap, and I’m no expert, but it isn’t hard to get the basics.

Yep.

FWIW, ESPN’s (Hollinger, I think) predictions (updated daily, based on old results only, I think)… have the Jazz finishing 8th in the West at 43-39. Yikes.

"SHOCK THE WORLD!! AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!"

by Shums on Dec 2, 2008 8:48 PM MST up reply actions

I dunno

Paulie’s young, but I’m not sure how much upside he has. Can he really get us 20 and 10 a night, given starter’s minutes? Because a healthy Boozer is a lock for that. Or maybe 15 and 8 from Sap is better, given his superior defense.

"SHOCK THE WORLD!! AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!"

by Shums on Dec 2, 2008 8:50 PM MST up reply actions

Salaries for next season...

Booze is due 12.3 million. He’s 2 years younger than Brand (but has missed 1 more season… kinda… due to injury). Brand got 13.78 million this year.

Okur is due 9 million next year. Not sure who to compare him to.

Korver is due 5.34 million. I tried comparing him to Kapono (3 ppg less than Korver, but 46.6% from long range to Korver’s 40.8%)… Kapono’s first year on his new contract only got him 5.35 million.

’Sap is due nothing. I compared him to Turiaf (high energy guys off the bench that were 2nd round picks)… Turiaf is getting 4.5 million this year.

by UtesFan89 on Dec 2, 2008 8:49 PM MST reply actions

Turiaf

Is the low low end of Millsap IMO

by rxmike12 on Dec 2, 2008 8:50 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah

I would much rather have ‘Sap, but couldn’t think of another comparison

by UtesFan89 on Dec 2, 2008 8:51 PM MST up reply actions

I know - I'm trying to think of one...

Haslem in Miami? Poor man’s Kenyon Martin?

by rxmike12 on Dec 2, 2008 8:52 PM MST up reply actions

How much money was Landry offered by Charlotte? He is in a very similar situation to Millsap.

And Korver will only opt out, if he doesn’t like playing in Utah. He can’t get more money, so it will be a personal decision type thing.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

by clarkpojo on Dec 2, 2008 8:53 PM MST up reply actions

Definitely

has to beat Turiaf’s 4.5 million.
’Sap will have the same NBA time, and has better numbers.

by UtesFan89 on Dec 2, 2008 9:18 PM MST up reply actions

How much does Ilgauskas make? He is similar to Okur.

Most experts think Okur will not opt out, cuz he can’t get better money. I agree. Boozer will be looking for a max contract, no doubt.

Millsap will get 8-10 million/year, I have to believe. I don’t think we will extend him until we see what Booze does, but I think we will match an offer sheet at all costs, if Boozer bolts. He is restricted. Could be a sticky situation though. We could lose both, hypothetically.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

by clarkpojo on Dec 2, 2008 8:52 PM MST up reply actions

I fear

Millsap will be the main offseason target for some team, sort of like Raja Bell was for the Suns, and that he’ll get a call right at midnight for some crazy amount that the Jazz are simply unwilling to match. So Sap will go, Boozer will dither for a few weeks and then go, and we’ll be stuck starting the Koof.

"SHOCK THE WORLD!! AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!"

by Shums on Dec 2, 2008 8:54 PM MST up reply actions

But you'd think they'd match anyway...

…and then take their chances with the Boozer/Okur contracts even if they keep all 3 for 1 year. Don’t be cheap Uncle Larry!

by rxmike12 on Dec 2, 2008 8:55 PM MST up reply actions

That is truly the worst case scenario.

But I hope the Jazz are smart enough to deal with Boozer only if he is a sure thing. If he is hedging, then they have to sign Millsap. A team like Charlotte or Memphis will absolutely go after Millsap. Although it will be the summer of thrifty spending due to the crop of 2010 free agents, so that may help the Jazz.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

by clarkpojo on Dec 2, 2008 8:56 PM MST up reply actions

That's where I think they're lucky...

I’m not sure who wants to blow their cash for 6-8 mil…

by rxmike12 on Dec 2, 2008 8:58 PM MST up reply actions

Okay, not certain but

I kind estimated the luxury tax and all.

Then using the max-ish for Booze, 6 for ‘Sap (Haslem started with 5), and assuming Okur doesn’t opt out (so 9), the Jazz would have to replace Korver, Fesenko, Flop, Almond, Price & Knight for about 4 million. Korver is due 5.34, so I think the Bird Rights or something would allow him to stay.

by UtesFan89 on Dec 2, 2008 8:58 PM MST reply actions

Oh

there is a team option on Fesenko for 870 K. According to some sites. Other sites don’t show it as a team option. Not sure.

by UtesFan89 on Dec 2, 2008 9:00 PM MST up reply actions

I agree.

It will come down to keeping Boozer or AK next season. But not both.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

by clarkpojo on Dec 2, 2008 9:07 PM MST up reply actions

the problem is

AK’s under contract. We can’t just not pay him. So if we decide we’re going to sign Boozer, we HAVE to find a willing taker for Andrei. And at his price, that will be very, very difficult. Best case, we end up trading him for 20 or 30 cents on the dollar, because after we sign Boozer every single team will have us over a barrel.

"SHOCK THE WORLD!! AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!"

by Shums on Dec 2, 2008 9:11 PM MST up reply actions

Just wondering...

if the Knicks really want Booze, how about Malik Rose (expiring) & David Lee (like getting another ’Sap) for him?

It’ll probably be easier to trade Booze than AK…

by UtesFan89 on Dec 2, 2008 9:13 PM MST up reply actions

His $16 million cost

is insane. Over 20% of the luxury tax limit

by UtesFan89 on Dec 2, 2008 9:07 PM MST up reply actions

Millsap

THREE fouls. Perhaps one of the biggest things to drive down his value. Whether he gets the rawest deal ever, or just isn’t smart enough to hide his contact, or whatever, the fact remains: he gets fouls called on him a LOT.

"SHOCK THE WORLD!! AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!"

by Shums on Dec 2, 2008 9:01 PM MST reply actions

we're getting hosed

by UtesFan89 on Dec 2, 2008 9:14 PM MST reply actions

What a hideous game so far

Both teams look horrible so far.

Martin looks rusty, but you don’t want to give him too many open shots for too long.

The Jazz turning the ball over like crazy but the Kings can’t make layups if their lives depended on it.

Second half goes to whoever focuses and starts playing good basketball.

Jazz have a better coach in Sloan, Kings have Theus who has some grudge against JT and doesn’t play him.

Boozer won’t play against the Heat, and says he’s “a week away.” He also says he’s “good friends with a lot of the guys” on the Heat, but that “It’s just friendships, know what I mean?” And Sloan doesn’t think the impending offseason has distracted Boozer’s effort so far this season, calling him “terrific to work with.”

Hey! We did this season, what we couldn't do last season.

Win in sacramento. i will take it. Glad I didn’t have to watch it.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

Most importantly...

We stay with Denver and Portland. Those guys just can’t lose and we can’t afford to fall too far behind. My prediction for tomorrow night? Wade scores 48 points and shoots 37 free throws, but we win by 6.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.
