Locke asked KOC yesterday about FA
He said that they had some calls to make. Haven’t heard any news yet. Of course the big news so far is that Baron Davis and Elton Brand opted out of their deals. Could shake up the west a bit.
GSOM is covering it along with Clippers Nation.

Yeah
4 years and 50 I think. It’s interesting that after Baron opts out, Golden State offers Arenas the max.

Arenas v Davis
Is Gilbert Arenas really an upgrade over Baron Davis? They’re both shoot-first gunners who look for their own stats over the good of the team. If I were the W’s I’d target a trade with the Bulls or Grizzlies for one of their extra PGs, and turn the keys over to Monta Ellis.

I think GS
Is trying to make up for when they let him go the first time. Seems like there’s some bad blood between GS & Davis.

Ugh.
Kwame Brown? Ugh. Sloan and Brown together would be a terrible mix.
I’m surprised there’s no mention of Josh Childress. He’s a restricted free agent, and would be much better addition to the team than any of the other dead weight that Ross Siler is proposing. (Although, Childress and Brewer do duplicate each other a bit).

Spurs interested in
That happens, and you have to put them above the Jazz in the West too, right?
Hopefully the Jazz will get off their asses and do something.

Adding Koufos and keeping the rest of the team won’t jump you over the Lakers, Spurs & Celtics.

Emeka Okafor
I really think he would thrive in Jerry Sloan’s system. Just watching him in college I thought he looked as if he would be a dominating presence like Tim Duncan, although I am not saying he is anything close to Tim Duncan but just coming out I thought he had those tools, and just maybe this is the gamble the Jazz need to take to see if he would be successful here.
And if they are really looking to change things in Detriot although I haven’t heard anything lately, but a Kirilenko and Brewer trade for Hamilton and Prince would be off the hook. So to put those pieces with Deron would be risky but might just work. A starting line up of DWill, Rip, Prince, Okafor, and Okur, I think would have legit chance.

We're targeting Maggette again
http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,700239822,00.html
Haven’t we been through this before? Isn’t he basically a shooter/scorer who can’t play defense? Hmmmmm.
I'll make it.

In that case
he fits right in.
You know… shooter/scorer that’ll eventually end up on the bench as J-Slow uses Korver, No Knees & even Price at the 2-guard spot.

I've written about it before.
But it would not surprise me now to see the Jazz trade Boozer. The reasoning is that they prefer to have everyone under contract and not have any uncertainty, perceived or otherwise. I’ve seen it elsewhere, but a three-way sending Booze to Miami, Beasley to LA, and Brand to the Jazz might just work. Does that work? I’m sure there’s some sign and trade involved. But I don’t think Boozer would be willing to do a S&T.
I’m not a trade/CBA expert. Anyone else want to expand on this?
by Basketball John on Jul 2, 2008 4:56 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Booze isn't a FA...
no sign & trade required.
Brand would need one because he opted out and is a FA.
I’m not sure on Beasley… you might have to wait a bit to trade a rookie. Not sure though.

I figured Miami would require a contract from Carlos.
So it wouldn’t be a sign and trade for him, but I’m sure Miami would want a contract extension before they did they deal.
I’ve tried to read the CBA and it’s like reading the phone book. I guess that’s why people that understand it get paid.
by Basketball John on Jul 2, 2008 10:06 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Michael Beasley's Contract
Since he was the second pick of the draft Beasley’s first year salary is slated at $3,595,800. But, since the CBA gives teams the options to exceed the rookie scale by up to 120% his first year could be worth as much as $4,314,960. So to get the trade to work you would have to do some fancy sign and trades. The ESPN Trade Machine hasn’t been updated yet with rookie contracts, so I’ll just have to wing it.
Utah sends Boozer to Miami
Miami sends Beasley, Marcus Banks and Mark Blount to LAC
LAC sends a re-signed Brand to Utah
Utah sends Ronnie Brewer to LAC
You’d probably have to add in some additional filler since I didn’t do exact calculations to make sure the salaries match, and I’m not quite sure what a max contract for Brand would look like right now. I hate to throw Brewer or Price into the deal, but you know that LAC would want a SG out of the deal (they’re backcourt is pretty thin), and we would need to throw in a low salary player to balance out Brand’s new contract.
You could also throw in any number of draft picks to sweeten the deal since draft picks have no dollar value under the CBA.
by kris247 on Jul 3, 2008 10:04 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't think that deal makes sense
We give up Boozer for Brand, his carbon copy, who’s even less battle-tested and even more injury-prone, AND we give up a player with a lot of upside in Ronnie Brewer. And Brand’s contract would be as much or more than what we would pay Boozer, meaning we’re still in the same boat salary-cap-wise. I vote no.
I'll make it.
by Shums on Jul 3, 2008 5:19 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I Didn't Say It Was a Good Deal...
...but, it should work under the CBA.
The only upside to that deal is that we would have certainty at PF for the next five years. Although, I think a max contract for a 29 year-old player coming off a near season-long injury is a bit ridiculous.

Some Free Agents for the Jazz to Consider
Of the top of my head, there isn’t a free agent that will definitely put us over the top without changing the main structure of the team. The Jazz need a shot blocker/rebounder that doesn’t demand the ball. I propose that the Jazz offer Chris Anderson a 2-3 year deal worth about 2-3 million a year. He know he is a risk, so I bet he doesn’t get a bigger contract than that and I think he would be a nice energy guy off the bench. He was a top ten shot blocker the year before he was banned from the league. I also think that Jeff Foster would be a guy to look at , since the Pacers would probably give him up for cheap.
by clarkpojo on Jul 3, 2008 7:29 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Trading AK
Also, if the opportunity came for us to free up some cap space by trading Kirilenko, I think the Jazz would have to consider it. If Golden State loses out on all the big Free Agents, they may be willing to make a trade for Andrei, since people have postulated that he would thrive in the Warrior system. Harrington and fillers would be a smart move. I am actually a big AK fan, but I think we could replace him more easily than any other big guy on the team. And his contract is killing us.
by clarkpojo on Jul 3, 2008 7:35 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
This is probably the most likely scenario.
I don’t want to see AK moved because I don’t know who would play D. Yet when he was out last year the Jazz only had one loss. Maybe not having AK makes the others step it up a little bit more because they don’t have someone to bail them out. We know the Jazz are going to keep Williams above everyone else.
So it comes down to picking between Boozer and AK. Who would you go with then?
by Basketball John on Jul 3, 2008 8:40 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
it's certainly possible
Golden State has lots of money to play with, but that’s because they have tons of players whose contracts are up. Restricted free agents include Kelenna Azubuike, Andris Biedrins, and Monta Ellis. Unrestricted: Matt Barnes, Austin Croshere, Mickael Pietrus and Patrick O’Bryant. Since Baron Davis is leaving the Warriors, and it’s unlikely they’ll really be able to win any of the bidding wars for the huge free agents (Elton Brand is NOT signing there), they may decide to go into rebuilding mode.
A package of Al Harrington with a sign-and-trade for Biedrins to make the salaries match, in exchange for Andrei Kirilenko, one of our center prospects (to replace Biedrins) and a few other pieces from the Jazz, like Hart and his expiring contract, or maybe draft picks, could work.
Golden State gets:
Andrei Kirilenko
Kyrylo Fesenko
Jason Hart
maybe Jarron Collins
maybe draft picks
Utah gets:
Al Harrington
Andris Biedrins
The upshot of that is that Golden State would be losing two starters (three, counting Baron Davis), including their only two real big guys, and they’d be losing lots of flexibility financially with Andrei’s huge contract. So the Jazz would have to give up a lot to sweeten the pot. This could leave us with:
PG: Deron Williams
SG: Ronnie Brewer
SF: Al Harrington
PF: Carlos Boozer
C: Mehmet Okur
Bench: Ronnie Price, Matt Harpring, Kyle Korver, Andris Biedrins, Paul Millsap, CJ Miles, Morris Almond. Improved defense at backup center with Biedrins, another nice scorer and outside shooter (but bad defender) in Harrington, and $9M off the cap when Harrington’s contract ends.
Two problems with this: Al Harrington may not be Jerry Sloan’s type of player. After five straight pull-up 3-pointers in transition, with our rebounders out of position (which Jerry HATES), he’d probably be riding the bench. I don’t know if he would really fit in a Jazz uniform.
The other problem: the Warriors would have to think AWFULLY highly of Kirilenko to agree to this deal. Their prospective starting five would be:
PG: Monta Ellis
SG: Matt Barnes
SF: Stephen Jackson
PF: Kirilenko
C: ...who at center? Fesenko? Collins? Patrick O’Bryant? Kosta Perovic, the rookie? Put Kirilenko at center and go super-duper-ultra small ball? Doubtful. And they’d have a horrible bench: Belinelli, Azubuike, Mickael Pietrus, Brandan Wright… that’s about it. No point guards, no real height… that’s a terrible roster, possibly the worst in the league, with only more free agency and more lottery picks to look forward to. Golden State would never agree to it, no matter how highly they thought of AK-47. But that would be a great deal for the Jazz.
Okay, I spent way too much time thinking about that.
I'll make it.

Quick bits...
“What can I do for my family with $127 million that I can’t do with $111 million?” he told The Washington Post.
...
“I’m basically giving back $16 million,” Arenas said. “This is in line with what I’ve been saying the whole time. You see players take max deals and they financially bind their teams. I don’t wanna be one of those players and three years down the road your team is strapped and can’t do anything about it.”
Lance Young, Paul’s agent, said Paul agreed to a three-year extension with a player’s option for a fourth year. The total value of the deal is $68 million.
The Hornets will pay Paul the maximum allowable under the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement, starting at 25 percent of the salary cap for the first year of the extension, with 10 percent raises thereafter.

Arenas is a true American Hero
Thank you Gilbert, for showing us the true meaning of sacrifice. Here is a question. What could do for your family with 127 million that you couldn’t do for like 20 million?
by clarkpojo on Jul 3, 2008 9:05 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Getting on Arenas?
At least he gave up that much.
He could’ve been like Latrell Sprewell… who couldn’t feed his family with $20 million or whatever.
And no way Agent Zero only goes for $20 million… look at the contracts being given out now. He’s better that most of the players out there.
I wonder if Booze would give up $16 million to stay in Utah (I don’t think it’d come to that, but still…)

Fear or not, it needs and has to be done
I really think if Boozer is…or…even if we aren’t at least 95% sure whether Carlos is going to stay. Then we shouldn’t even gamble with that doubt and just get something now and I know you don’t run your franchise in fear of somehting happening but I think in this case as many other sports columnists have said that when you play with a snake don’t be surprised if you get bitten, so I think in this situation you have to manage the franchise in fear of it happening cause Carlos Boozer has done it before, and really hasn’t given us any real assurance that anything has changed with him.
So in that case I think Emeka Okafor has the style and build of what we are doing in our system, and I think we take a serious long look at acquiring him, cause Elton Brand is going to resign with L.A., and he is really the only other player I could see thats was obtainable to fill the role of a system that centers around the point guard and power forward. And if not Okafor, then who do you go after? And please no unrealistic scenerios.

Starbury
Has been done in New York for a year, but no one has bothered to tell him yet. Heck, he was done the second the Suns traded him to NY for the pu-pu platter (to barrow a phrase from Simmons). You can even argue he was done when he pouted his way out of Minnesota and into New Jersey. What a tool.

One less thing to worry about
Well Jazz fans don’t have to worry about Corey Maggette anymore either. Not that we thought we might get him. It will be fun to wake up in the morning and see if the Jazz have offered anyone a contract. The biggest rumors have surrounded offering Ronny Turiaf a contract. It seems like a lateral move to me. Instead of being crowded at the shooting guard position, we will be overcrowded at the power forward. In fact I will be disappointed if we do sign Turiaf. We already don’t have enough minutes for Millsap.
by clarkpojo on Jul 8, 2008 10:03 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed.
Plus, signing anyone is out of the question unless either…
1- You aren’t going to resign CJ no matter what.
2- You’ve got a trade going down where you give up more (# wise) than you get back
3- You’re going to buy out Flop or Hart.
I don’t see any of them as being real possibilities right now (unless CJ gets a huge offer from someone).

The Jazz Made CJ a Qualified Offer
on June 28, which means that he’s a restricted free agent, and already counts against our cap and roster space for next season. (According to the D-News the contract is believed to be 1.8 million for one year). The only way we get that space back to sign another FA is if some team (such as Detroit) offers CJ a contract and the Jazz chose not to match.
We should still have our mid-level exception to play with, but as UtesFan89 pointed out we would have to make some trades since we already have 15 players under contract for next season.
(Interesting side note: CJ Miles also appears to be the name of a “sexy Filipina model” based on what I’m seeing Google. I’m a little afraid to click on the links from my work computer).

Time to bump this up?
Anyhow…
the Lakers have offered Odom for Artest.
the Magic like Jason Williams, but might not have the room.
the Warriors have signed Turiaf to an offer sheet.
the Wizards have signed Shorty to an offer sheet (you already got this one).
the Rockets look to have the edge in signing Brent Barry.
the Suns could end up with Tyronn Lue.
the Bucks gave Bogut $72 million.
Elsewhere…
Brad Miller will be suspended 5 games for violating the anti-drug policy.
JamesOn Curry will be suspended 1 game for public urination or something.
Oh, and most important to Jazz fans…
KOC & LHM & J-Slow continue to sit around and pick their noses. By the time they’re done, Shorty will be a Wizard, Deron will have his 3/4/5 year contract, and Jason Hart will be signing a 6-year contract extension.

Free Agency is a potential problem
Unless CJ Miles gets an offer and we let him go, free agency might be a big problem. We would have to buy out someone’s contract in order to make roster space. But if we do let CJ go, I think we should make an offer to some people. 1. Chris Andersen: I think we could get him for cheap and not too many years. He blocks shots and provides energy as long as he can kick the habit 2. Alonzo Mourning: I know he wants to stay in Miami, but what if he wants to make one more run at a title and we offer him 3 or 4 million for one more go? 3. Theo Ratliff: If we lose Miles to Detroit, we offer one more million than Detroit offers for Ratliff to come and block shots. He has blocked a shot every 8 mins during his career and won’t demand the ball on offense.
If we don’t end up signing a free agent, then we have three expiring contracts (two of them players we don’t need) to offer before the trade deadline for a good player from a bad team that wants to clear cap space a la Gasol.
But one trade I thought of, and you are all going to cringe when you hear this, but it would improve us defensively and I like it the more I think about it. I think we should trade Boozer and Miles (sign and trade) to Detroit for Rasheed Wallace. It would give us the defensive big man we have coveted and Detroit is looking for another go to guy and it would save them money on Miles, who they are interested in. Wallace is the defensive anchor of one of the best defensive teams in the last 10 years. Think about it and tell me why that wouldn’t be a good trade. And don’t give me stuff about Wallace and Sloan not getting along. It is chronicled that Wallace is one of the smartest, most hard working players in the NBA. Sloan would love him.
