Another Western Conference team improves

Ron Artest to the Rockets for Bobby Jackson, a 1st rounder, cash, and one more player (if it's Donte Greene as rumored, the deal can't go down till August 14th or so).

Gotta love sitting still.

This might be a good thing

if it motivates KOC to start making some phone calls.

Another lopsided trade.

Artest for Jackson (who wanted to leave SacTown), a first rounder that won’t be a high pick, and another throw-in? I don’t know if we beat the Rockets the last couple of playoff series if they have Artest.

by Basketball John on Jul 29, 2008 7:59 PM MDT   0 recs

It's actually not so bad for Sac

Donte Greene is one of the more promising rookies of the draft and could develop into their starting 3, B-Jax fills a backup PG need, and then the pick and cash is gravy (plus they get rid of an unhappy Artest).

But yeah, Houston is looking pretty good now, especially if Yao and the other guy can stay healthy.

What does Houston

do with Battier now?
Battier off the bench really improves their bench as well.

I don't like this trade for the Rockets

I don’t get what all the hype is about. First of all, Artest hasn’t made a team a winner for about 5 years. I don’t think he is at a place mentally that will allow him to be a big asset to the Rockets. Secondly, Houston is already a force defensively and that is Artest’s strength. He is not an efficient offensive player at all. He is redundant to both McGrady and Battier, with his strengths (tough defense at the 3 spot and chucking up shots he shouldn’t chuck). I think it improves them a little bit, but they were going to be a contender anyway. And there is great risk that this trade will bring the rockets to a lower level of play. But it is just for one year.

His offense isn't that bad.

He’s not going to be getting as many touches as he has in his career, but he has a lifetime ppg of 16 with the last couple of years hovering around 20 points. He has a reasonable three-point shot. And of course he has D.

With Mac and Yao, he’s not going to be high in the offensive rotation, but he does get a lot of offensive boards, assists, and steals. That could lead to some points for him.

Let’s hope that getting these headcases together does more harm than good.

But I’m not worried, we have the Quarterback that can get inside his head. And that’s what’s most important.

by Basketball John on Jul 29, 2008 11:18 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I dunno

my jury is still out on this one too—picking up Artest in any situation is pretty much a game of Russian Roulette, even if he has T-Mac, Yao and Battier around to keep him in check. (Well, I don’t think any of those players are real leaders, and I doubt they will do much to temper Artest’s pants-on-head craziness.)

But it’s true, other teams do seem to be making splashy moves, and the Jazz continue to do nothing but re-sign Miles and get rid of Hart. Still waaaay too soon to panic, in my opinion, but I’m definitely starting to shift uncomfortably in my seat.

I'll make it.

by Shums on Jul 29, 2008 9:02 PM MDT   0 recs

Way too soon to panic?

The off-season is almost over… all the key (non-RFA) guys have been signed.
It’s kinda late to make a real helpful move now… teams are just searching for scraps and hoping.

The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.

dude

You’re funny sometimes. Clark already said this, but crap goes down at the trade deadline all the time. Even a move on a similar level to the midseason Korver trade last year would be useful. I would have loved to see a big signing, but our roster is full, we have tradeable assets (even if they’re just young prospects and draft picks), and we’re one of the five best teams in the league without doing a damn thing.

I get where you’re coming from, but seriously, chill, brother. I really think it’s all good in the hood.

I'll make it.

It is way too soon to panic

The off-season is not almost over. There are 3 months left, more than half of the offseason and there are still moves to be made. Not to mention that a lot of the best moves (Rasheed Wallace 4 years ago, or Gasol last year) are made at the trade deadline, so you can’t judge the Jazz on sitting on their hands until after the trade deadline. If we trade our expiring contracts for a great player on a non-competetive team then we will be praising the front office for their patience.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

by clarkpojo on Jul 29, 2008 9:52 PM MDT   0 recs

I highly doubt

we’ll get the equivalent of Gasol for a package led by Flop, Knight, Almond and a contract that Karl Malone agreed to sign just because he could.

That wasn’t a trade… that was a pure bank robbery in front of the cops (Stern & co.)... who let it happen and even helped them get away.

What players are you going to trade at the deadline?
Deron’s staying. Booze is gonna scare teams off with his “opt out to Miami” thing. Plus, trading him or Okur is going to hurt the team more than it helps.
AK’s probably in the same category as above.
Brewer… I don’t think so.
Korver? I don’t see them trading him.
‘Sap? No.
CJ can’t be dealt.

That leaves… Price. Knight. Almond. No Knees. Flop. Fesenko. Koufos.
What the hell are you going to get for that?
Almond & Koufos might be exciting… but they’re mid-to-late 20s picks. And both looked bad in the summer league (Koufos everywhere, Almond on his jumper… plus he does nothing else). Fesenko is a 2nd rounder who has looked bad. Price might be exciting if you want to trade a great player for a back-up PG. Knight’s all but done. No Knees… read the name. Flop… his expiring contract is very, very small.

I just don’t see what the team can get for them… now or later. The team needed to make an impact FA signing early (trading these guys for whatever you can get)... it’s probably too late now. Any move now will probably have to involve one of the core guys (again, unless Stern & co. help us pull off a robbery).

I guess we still have the 2010 Knicks pick…

The Utah Jazz. The Jazz... duh.
The best NBA team in Utah... no doubts about it!

We have a couple of things

But that doesn’t make it that much easier.

-AK is still a trade option despite his contract. We would just have to take back a high-priced defensive player. I don’t know who that is.
-Some teams might be interested in Almond. Someone from the 2/3 has to go.
-Fess isn’t worth much now for trades.
-Hart was our only other expiring contract besides Flop. But Collins could have some value that way, even if his contract is only a couple million.

So there’s a bit there to work with, but not much. I don’t know if any of it would land us a player that would make us insta-favorites.

by Basketball John on Jul 29, 2008 11:22 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Trade Boozer?

Who does Miami have now? Or maybe a 3-way deal can be done that lands him there and somebody bigger than him here (too bad Charlotte wrapped up Okafor; where is Jermaine O’neill these days?)

The weakness of our group is that we have two unconventional stars in Boozer and Okur - both effective in their own way, but neither dominant in the way you expect a star player to be. Okur won't overpower any other 5 in the league, and Boozer is wiley but small. So I don't mind trading Boozer (I would keep Okur) if we can get a bigger 4 - maybe a defensive-minded 4. DW can run the pick and roll with Okur the way they did when Boozer was out two years ago (which landed Okur a cameo in the ASG).

So, assuming a trade is possible, who’s out there?

My team is on the floor.

What happened

Something weird happened in the way my last post got formatted. Sorry if you can’t read the whole thing. You may assume that it was brilliant now that it can’t be read all the way through.

That's useful

I’ve been seeing that on a couple different SBNation blogs, and I don’t know how to read it (or how it came out like that, but that’s a different problem).

Another Team Gets Stronger

As teams get tougher in the West, the Jazz stay the same. The need to get “tougher”!!! They’re too soft and unless they toughen it up on the defensive end they’re not going to get home court and they’re probably not going to get out of the first round of the playoffs this year. Toughen it up Jazz!!!

by TWSSO on Jul 30, 2008 9:12 AM MDT   0 recs

Meh.

For the last 800 or so years every writer for every newspaper and website writes a story about how the Rockets are going to be contenders for the championship. And every year something happens: Yao breaks his foot, or leg, or coccyx or the Chinese government runs him ragged playing ridiculous exhibition games to the point where he’s dragging up and down the court by February. Or, T-Mac’s streaky shot gets even streakier, and he goes 0-93 from the field. Or, the coaching rotations are so insane (Hi Rick!) that there’s consistency for the players so everyone starts pouting (Hi Rafer!) and the team goes down the tubes. Or, it turns out they’re just not that good of a team, and they get bounced in the first round, just like the last they have every time they’ve reached the postseason since 1997-98. Adding Ron Artest to the mix isn’t going to change anything – especially when he has his inevitable mid-season breakdown and gets arrested for cat juggling.

The Rockets are definitely in the “prove it to me” category. No amount of off-season posturing is going to convince me that they belong in the upper echelon of the Western Conference.

I Hate Proofreading

The above should read:

...that there’s NO consistency for the players…

And Edit Post function would be a welcome feature.

Yes it would be.

It’s been submitted to the SB development team. I believe it will be coming out in the next version. I don’t have a date on that though.

by Basketball John on Aug 2, 2008 4:21 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Agree with Kris

I love how John Hollinger just wrote an article about how Artest will make the Rockets legitimate contenders for the title, but guess who picked the Rockets to represent the west in the finals last year: John Hollinger. They have been favorites a lot, but can’t put it together. They still don’t have a good point guard and that is going to hurt him. The key to being a good ofensive team is either getting easy baskets, getting to the line, getting offensive boards, or hitting 3’s. A combination of that is the best. I don’t think Artest improves the Rockets in any of these categories except maybe offensive rebounds. The minute he starts jacking up long range shots, he isn’t helping the offense, because they might as well have McGrady jacking up long range shots. It’s not like he is a great 3 point shooter. And he is not going to dominate from the 4 spot against the likes of Booozer and Gasol and Kurt Thomas. I think it is a great trade for the rockets in terms of low risk and not giving up much, but if they break through and win the title, it won’t be because of Artest. It will be because Yao dominated anyway.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.
