AK on the block?

I just linked this article from the SLC tribune and opened a fanshot about it over at MMB and wanted to get your guy's thoughts on it.  If AK is in fact on the trading block, at what cost are you guys willing to give him up.

Before you jump on the AK for Howard wagon, I think any deal that includes Howard, would also somehow have to include Miles or Brewer with AK in order for the Mavs to pull the trigger on that deal.

Doing a Howard + scraps for AK is a lateral move that the Mavs will not be interested in.

If its expiring you guys want though, the Mavs can pull that off, while even throwing in an up and coming player in Bass.  Just wanted to get your thoughts on how bad you guys are wanting to move AK in order to resign Boozer and Okur.

All comments are the opinion of the commenter and not necessarily that of SLC Dunk or SB Nation.

I don't think AK is getting moved

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the reason the Jazz nixed the trade for Shawn Marion last year because they wanted team stability? It seems like the organization is pretty committed to AK.

Miles

can’t be moved this year.
I think that was the stipulation with the matching the offer.
Or at least he can’t be dealt in a multi-player deal.
Something like that.
Brewer isn’t going anywhere.

Maybe Almond?

I think you're right about miles

much like devin harris was for us last year, I think he cannot be moved until mid-December at the earliest.

As for AK...

I really don’t think the Jazz should trade him.

Just my $0.02 though.

Agreed...

I don’t think they will, or should, trade him. I really think he might have a re-breakout year this year.

Josh Howard

is an intriguing proposition, but it’s hard to see how such a trade would really work. Dallas is miles over the cap, and AK’s contract is quite a bit larger than Howard’s. There aren’t too many pieces Dallas has that we would want—Brandon Bass is Paul Millsap Redux, or vice versa.

The Jazz roster is packed to the gills, too, so if you’re thinking of tossing in extra Dallas players to make the contracts match, that means Utah would have to give up other players too, making the price yet higher under trade rules.

The move would also do nothing to address the Jazz’s interior defense issues.

In short, an interesting idea, but not feasible, in my opinion.

I'll make it.

Plus Howard & marijuana

Not sure if LHM would put up with that (if he even has a say anymore).

Hey, we had Keon Clark for awhile, and he claims to have never played a game sober, and has been cited for marijuana possession more times than I can count.

Yeah, it’s pretty sweet, eh?

Actually, I’ve been suffering from a pretty severe case of Internet ennui, and couldn’t bring myself to actually open my newsreader. But, I’m back now.

Ennui

is an awesome word.

I'll make it.

My wife made fun of me for pronouncing it incorrectly. For the record, it’s “on-whee”, not “in-new”. That’s what happens when a kid from Utah tries to use fancy French words. C’est la vie.

Clark was a mistake

and I think he was only acquired to help a team with salary problems (aka… an extra pick for the Jazz).

Yeah, he was a total mistake (except that we turned him into Gugliotta’s expiring contract, which eventually turned into Memo). But, it’s proof that at one point LHM could make a personnel decision that went contrary to his “character guy” mandate.

I don't think AK gets traded.

He’s an insurance policy in case they can’t re-sign Boozer next year. If they can sign Booze for what they want, then AK is gone.

by Basketball John on Aug 13, 2008 10:31 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

haven't seen it put exactly like that before

I think you’re right. I think the decision is definitely between those two - it’s one or the other. There’s another factor there, though - if Boozer opts out, and then re-signs for the amount the Jazz want, the entire league will know that we have to move someone, and we’ll lose any bargaining position we might have had for AK. We’d have to let him go for pennies on the dollar.

The timeline has to be: Boozer opts out, the Jazz agree to a dollar amount but don’t announce it, they trade AK, then get Boozer re-signed. (On the other hand, that would open the door for Betrayal Skull Dude to go back on the previous agreement after AK is gone, knowing he has the Jazz over a barrel. Ugh. This could get complicated.)

I'll make it.

I posted a trade proposal over at the bedge to see what other people thought of ak

couse everything ive read about him and the few times ive seen him play ive liked him, and the first responce i got was from one of the facilitators saying that ak has the worst contract in the league. i think many of us are a little to high on ourselves there. well now we have brandon goin in for surgery and i sure would love some ak for martell, draft pick and raif lefriends expiring contract right now.

He does have a bad contract...

he’s paid to be a star, but he’s more of a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none… and since he doesn’t score a ton (and because of bad numbers because he’s playing out of position), he’s considered overpaid.

It’s something that would end up affecting the return should the Jazz hope to trade him.

AK for Howard not happening

The Jazz have usually tried to get character guys. After the whole smoking the “good stuff” incident with Howard, I don’t see the Jazz getting rid of AK for him. LHM is in love with AK and places him in the top 5 NBA players in the league if he is playing the way AK plays. If LHM still has a say in any moves, there is no way he is going to trade AK for the “high flying” Josh Howard.

Besides, like what has already been mentioned, the money thing doesn’t match up and the Jazz can’t add any more to their roster. It almost has to be a straight up trade, and I don’t think anyone in the league wants to do that.
