Let's take advantage of Houston's spending habits

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about how the Jazz could clear up roster space in order to offer either Alonzo Mourning or Dikembe Mutombo a one year offer and shore up our backup center position.  Well after reading this on espn.com:  "From his book, Resilience: Faith, Focus, Triumph, ... on leaving the Heat as a free agent in 2003 for a larger contract offer from the Nets:"

Alonzo Mourning: "I never should have left Miami. I was caught up in things like market value." -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel

I decided that Mourning isn't an option, but here are some more rumors on the Mutombo side from espn.com:

Waiting On Rockets

Dikembe Mutombo | Rockets

Dikembe Mutombo said Thursday he will give the Rockets time to make some planned cost-cutting moves before signing, a delay that could put him well into the season before returning.

"I spoke with the Rockets and we are waiting on them, looking (for) a way to create cap room for me to come back," Mutombo, 42, said. "That's what I'm doing now, just waiting.

"I like the city of Houston and I love the people there. They have embraced me in the four years, and they have helped me achieve a lot to be able to open the hospital (in the Congo). I have wonderful teammates, Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady, Shane Battier. We have very, very special relationships. I can play one more year. I'm trying to see if I can get a chance to play there. Hopefully, I will." -- Houston Chronicle

Basically, the Rockets matched an offer that the Bobcats made to Carl Landry, putting Houston into luxury tax area and they don't have room right now to sign Mutombo.  To me it sounds like there is a possibility that Houston won't be able to offer anything to Mutombo. Maybe the Jazz could even get him cheaper than originally thought.  Don't you think he wants to play this year, even if not for Houston?  You have to admit that you would love to see this picture every night in the ESA, only with a Jazz jersey on obviously. Isn't Our Roster Full?

We would have to waive someone (Hi, Collins!) to clear up roster space for Mutumbo. But, I like your thinking here. Mount Mutumbo off the bench for 8-9 minutes a game, which would be good for at least 3 FW (Finger Wags) a game. ESA would love him.

You are right.

In the article I alluded to, I detailed how the Jazz could clear roster space and then offer between 7 and 10 million dollars for one year to either Mourning or Mutombo without going into the luxury tax. Mourning seems to be out now, so I was saying that we should really go after Mutombo now that the Rockets can’t afford him.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.
