Here's how sick I am...

I was reading about the whole Flash debacle so I went to watch it on YouTube and saw a related file to Jordan’s last shot. So I had to watch that over and over. Just to pay for my Jazz sins.

Do you believe in Magic? And I hope you do.

dwill doubled on one possession

while a fantastic player, howard isn’t exactly hakeem on the block. memo has to do a better job of playing position defense.

So Orlando is a fantastic road team and who are their veterans?

I don’t want to hear about the Jazz being a bad road team do to youth, ever again.

At least the Jazz always have excuses about underachieving.

“When Kyle Korver gets back it will make a huge difference.”

When we are fully healthy and underachieving, people will say, “When Matt Harpring comes back, he will give them a boost.”

I thought the same thing. I felt that way about the combo of Miles/Korver, but I don’t think Korver is anywhere close to a life-changer…

…unless he asks Danielle out or something.

Let me enlighten you guys with some awesome excerpts from the Book of Basketball.

From the chapter about “the Secret”:

“I was getting comfortable with him (isiah Thomas). Comfortable enought that I had to ask about the SEcret. Detroit won the 1989 title after collapsing in consecutive springs against the ‘87 Celtics and ’88 Lakers, two of the toughest exits in playoff history. The ’89 Pistons regrouped for 62 wins an swept the Lakers for their first championship, vindicating a controversial in-season trade that shipped Adrian Dantley and a draft pick to Dallas for Mark Aguirre. That season lives on in Cameron Stauth’s superb book THE FRANCHISE, which details how GM Jack McCloskey built those particular Piston teams”

From THE FRANCHISE: “It’s not about physical skills. Goes far beynd that. When I first came here McCloskey took a lot of heat for draftng a smal guy. But he knew that the only way our team would rise to the top would be by mental skills, not size or talent….But it’s hard not to be selfish. The art of winning is complicated by statistics, which for us becomes money. Well, you gotta fight that, find a way around it. And I think we have….We got 12 guys who are totaly commited to winning. Every night we found a different person to win it for us….Lots of times, on our team, you couldn’t tell who the best player in the game was. Everybody did something good. That’s what makes us so good. It’s the only way to win. The only way to win. But there’s more to it than that. You also got to create an environment that won’t accept losing.”

Simmons continues: “Isiah just described everything you would need to know about winning an NBA championship. I always wanted to know what the secret was…. ‘The secret of basketball’, he told me, ‘is that it’s not about basketball.”

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

by clarkpojo on Dec 10, 2009 9:56 PM MST reply actions

As much as I don't do books..

I should probably breakdown and read Simmons.

by rxmike12 on Dec 10, 2009 9:57 PM MST up reply actions

Listen to how well this continued explanation pertains to the Jazz:

" For the next few minutes, Isiah explained it to me. After coming sooooo close for two straight postseasons, the chemistry for the’89 team was off for reasons that had nothing to do with talent. Chuck Daly needed to give Dennis Rodman more playing time, only the Teacher (Dantley’s nickname, in an ironic twist) wasn’t willing to accommodate him. And that was a problem. Rodman could play any style and defend every type of player…Isiah and Vinnie Johnson gave up minutes for Dumars, and Rick Mahorn gave up minutes for Salley. But when Rodman started stealing crunch-time minutes from Dantly, the Teacher started sulking and even complained to a local writer. You couldn’t call it betrayal, but Dantley had undermined an altruistic dynamic that hinged on players forfeiting numbers for the overall good of the team. The Pistons couldn’t risk having Dantley (hurt that). They quickly swapped him for the enigmatic Aguirre….Maybe Dantly was a better player than Aguirre, but Aguirre was a better fit for the 1989 Pistons. If they didn’t make that deal, they wouldn’t have won the title. It was a people trade, not a basketball trade."

This book is full of brilliant anecdotes like this one. Chad Ford said it best when he described the book. “I knew it would be funny, but I didn’t expect it to be so profound.”

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

by clarkpojo on Dec 10, 2009 10:04 PM MST up reply actions

"I'm getting a raise regardless" "I'm a starter period"

He may put up fantastic stats, but Boozer has undermined the team. And even if you think most NBA players care about money more than winning, we have proof that Boozer would rather have good personal stats than have the team win.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

by clarkpojo on Dec 10, 2009 10:11 PM MST up reply actions

What we should do for payroll is this;

Set total payroll figure at the cap.

Each player gets a million GTD.

Performance, W’s and post season determine how the rest gets split.

Paid for performing! Not for showing up.

by RRR on Dec 10, 2009 10:15 PM MST up reply actions

Crap......

But I agree. Boozer I think is just beginning to see the damage he caused by his “I’m gittin a raise” crap!

by RRR on Dec 10, 2009 10:20 PM MST up reply actions

really?

Where is the proof that he would rather have good stats than have the team win?

I don’t see how those comments relate to that at all…

I’m a starter – I think i’m the best 4 on the team, so i should be starting…. i’m getting a raise regardless – i think my play over the past 5 years merits an increase in pay…. (whether we agree or not)

This theory is great in practise, but I haven’t seen Isiah use this formula to take his teams anywhere in recent years….

by sherbs on Dec 10, 2009 10:23 PM MST up reply actions

That's an irony that Simmons points out too. When Isiah became a GM, the secret went out the window.

But the most condemning comments by Boozer:

“I thought we played great against the Lakers.” Really, Carlos? Cuz you guys got killed in five games. What he meant was that he played well. Or how about this?

Boozer tells the sltrib that he played great against the Lakers, but unfortunately his teammates didn’t carry their part of the load.

I respect you for your loyalty to Boozer, Sherbs, but explain to me how anyone who wants to win badly, is satisfied with the teams’ play against the Lakers or puts the blame on teammates. Guys like Wilt Chamberlain, Al Harrington, and other guys who are stat seekers to the detriment of the team sometimes.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

by clarkpojo on Dec 10, 2009 11:28 PM MST up reply actions

I don't completely disagree with what you are saying

but often I think Boozer is made a scapegoat for all of the teams problems, when he has also been a big part of the team’s success in the past.

So yeah, admittedly i am the guy who will always play devil’s advocate :) I seriously do think that the team’s success depends largely on Booze, and I really want him and the team to be successful and I’m the first to point out the positives…

So along those lines :)

D-Will made similar comments about his teammates not doing their bit after the Spurs loss in 07 :)

by sherbs on Dec 11, 2009 1:13 AM MST up reply actions

I agree that Boozer has become a scapegoat. Completely true.

And that’s a fair point about Deron, although looking at his words at that time, he was more disappointed in the effort of teammates and the fact that some of them already had plane tickets home.

And just for future reference, if you are defending Carlos Boozer, you are being a Blue Devil’s advocate.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

BBJ-

ironically enough, we watched ‘Old Yeller’ in my 4th grade class and then everyone started calling me ‘Danieller’ which then was shortened to ‘Yeller’. Very unluxury.

by DaniellelovesKK on Dec 10, 2009 10:15 PM MST reply actions

I hate to call out D-Will for playing to make the all-star team, but I think there is a reason he plays his best ball post all-star break.

He just plays to win the game. Hopefully when he makes his first all-star game, he can just move on and continue to dominate.

Hollinger wrote an article about Deron's splits on assists on the road and at home.

At home he gets some favorable assist tallies like that one to Ronnie Brewer. I think Brewer caught the ball at about the three point line and took a couple dribbles.

Ya can't worry about them.

It’s like many that root for Dallas Cowboys, media’s version of America’s Team…..

Bull….

But they think they are rooting for a winner, and LZ is a good team. I’d bet few of them know anybody on the Jazz team and the only game they attend is the LA game. Ignorance can be bliss, for some.

by rxmike12 on Dec 10, 2009 11:29 PM MST up reply actions

Stat of the night:

Over the last 5 quarters, the Jazz have scored 126 points.

by rxmike12 on Dec 10, 2009 11:31 PM MST reply actions

He won't be here next year!

If he is on his way out, then open the door for him so the rest can move forward!

by RRR on Dec 10, 2009 11:45 PM MST up reply actions

But he is, isn't he?

I’ll ask for the millionth time…. are we trading him for “addition by subtraction” or do you think there’s a piece we can get to make us win right here, right now.

by rxmike12 on Dec 10, 2009 11:45 PM MST up reply actions

The only problem is his history...

Almost always hurt, then plays a bit, then does what he has done this year. It’s like, which Boozer is going to show up?

I’m pretty sure all the owners are aware.

by RRR on Dec 10, 2009 11:47 PM MST up reply actions

One would hope they are better than that.

About to hand some guy 15 mill + a year, I be personally watching every game he ever played from High School to current! Every interview and especially those surrounding some challenge like last summer.

by RRR on Dec 10, 2009 11:52 PM MST up reply actions

Well I guess we were "just going through the motions tonight cause Boozer aint comin back"

Seriously Barkley does not know that you can’t just go through the motion playing for Sloan.

by RIon on Dec 10, 2009 11:52 PM MST reply actions

I don't think the Jazz are going through the motions, but I do agree with Barkley that subconsciously Boozer's effort will decrease.

Its human nature. What will Boozer be playing or after the trade deadline?

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

by clarkpojo on Dec 10, 2009 11:56 PM MST up reply actions

He told all of us that last summer

“I’m gonna get a raise”!!!!

The freak was making 15-16 mill a year? He should have departed back then.

by RRR on Dec 11, 2009 12:07 AM MST up reply actions

Well Rion how very cool is that?

Well AK I guess the word is COLD!!!

I don’t like those thoughts, not one bit. But Carlos is the one that had the opportunity to stand up and some day stand beside the likes of Malone. GAWD knows he actually has more raw talent and ability. It’s a shame it is.

by RRR on Dec 11, 2009 12:14 AM MST up reply actions

Tis cold here indeed, been following him for forever now and even if he just plays for the money, shouts...

“And one!” (which I’m convinced are his two favorite words) all the time, and keeps letting us down, I’ll still sadly be a fan…..

by RIon on Dec 11, 2009 12:22 AM MST up reply actions

Agree, the picture we see is not the entire shot.

Think about your personal effort at your job knowing you won’t have it in a few months. Or think about the uncertainty of a new owner of your job.

Stuff goes on in the mind, and in the mind of your co-workers as well. Gets displayed in many potential avenues. Right now Booze is blowing off all our doors! Goody for us, TODAY, but as near as I can tell, he finally showed to play after three plus years of getting paid massive bucks!

by RRR on Dec 11, 2009 12:06 AM MST up reply actions

How about Boozer for Nick Collison in what would mostly be a salary cutting measure.

Although Collison would come in and play his butt of on defense and rebounding.

Better Late Than Never...

Stayed away today as the game was on delayed TV Broadcast here at 7:30 Australian time (it’s currently 1:30am as I post this.) Watched the game with 2 really good mates who are both Basketball junkies like me, but who are Bulls and Rockets fans respectively.
They enjoyed watching me ride the emotional rollercoaster as much as the game; from reading through all your comments it seems we were all on the same wavelength.
During the half-time commercial break (the game was ‘condensed’ to 2 hours) I said “DWill needs to take over this quarter if we have any hope…” and he did. I thought Deron stepped up and dragged the team back into the lead, by making the key pass/read/playcall and with his general attitude. Yes, second day on here and I’m declaring my man-crush for Deron.

I thought you all may be interested in some observations from people who don’t watch every Jazz game like we do:
- They both seemed to think that Boozer’s general body language seemed very positive, and were amazed at my reaction to his diving on the floor.
- They both now get an inkling of why I have a man-crush on DWill. There were some WOW’s and NICE PASS’s for some of Deron’s work. They also can’t believe he hasn’t been an All-Star after seeing him tonight. (we don’t get many Jazz games on TV here)
- BS and joking aside they don’t agree with the Jazz = Boring tag, but they do wonder why we lay the ball up sometimes instead of dunking it (I do too) and think our shot selection is a bit haphazard at times (as do I)
- Wes and CJ impressed the s**t outta them.

Possibly the southernmost Jazz fan in the world!

by TazzJazzFan on Dec 11, 2009 7:41 AM MST reply actions

I can't think of a cheeky answer for this, so I'll be honest

We used to get 1 NBA game a week on TV in the late 80’s. One Friday night they showed a Jazz game, and I finally got to see this John Stockton fella. As a young kid learning to be a PG who read everything he could get his hands on about the NBA (which in those days were 2 months old Hoops and Basketball Digest) I sat there glued to his every move and became a Jazz fan from the first pick and roll I saw. And once you choose a team (or the team chooses you) you stick with them, so here I am.

Possibly the southernmost Jazz fan in the world!

by TazzJazzFan on Dec 11, 2009 2:49 PM MST up reply actions

Very nice post and welcome to the site.

I think we were all flabbergasted when Boozer dove after that ball. You gotta hand it to him.

I was a long time lurker.

I tend to just sit back and get the lay of the land on a forum before I start posting.

Also: get up and OneHD (free to air sports channel) is replaying the game. Currently 2 min to go in the second. Will be nice to watch the 3rd without the stress…
