Post-game reaction and post-game therapy
Look for my recap in this space. For those reading via feed, I'll republish when I get my recap up.
I was only able to listen to bits and pieces but one moment we had a 7-point lead in the second and the next we were down 7.
I need to watch the game, why I don't know, and I'll have a thorough recap sometime tomorrow afternoon.
In the mean time, feel free to use this thread as therapy and to talk each other off the edge and away from the bottle.

Talking myself off the ledge
well, first… I’m not too far onto it. I slept through most of the game, so it’s all good.
That said, quite simply…
I’m pretty I’ve convinced myself of a few things as of late.
1- The Lakers > The Jazz this year. If both teams played their best, the Lakers would win.
2- The Jazz bench is really bad. Depth, blah blah. The Jazz are about 6-deep right now (Deron, Brewer, AK, Korver, Booze, ‘Sap)… add 1 if Okur gets healthy. Not going to cut it.
3- j-slow is never going to win it all. His style, his unwillingness to change, his complete avoidance of youngsters for over-the-hill vets, whatever you want to call it. Sorry, but it’s the truth (unless, of course, they completely revamp the team, very quickly)
4- I really like ‘Sap. That said, unless it’s a huge discount to keep him, you have to keep Booze over him. But not for max money.
5- The Jazz have a system implemented by j-slow. They have 15 players. Most of them don’t fit the system. You can get by in the regular season. But when it gets all intense in the playoffs, the Jazz system implodes.
6- Three pointers are important in the modern day game. j-slow laughs at your modernity.
7- When I played Jr. Jazz basketball, they made us practice FTs & do lay-up drills. Obviously, that was a waste of time, because the professionals don’t look like they’ve ever done them.
The Lakers know their system, and have built around it. They’ve got the stars (Bryant, Gasol), a big (Bynum) and guys that can shoot jumpers (Brown. Vujacic. Odom? Fisher. Ariza). Then you’ve got the Jazz, who have a system and some guys that fit it offensively (Deron, Booze, Okur?, Korver, Brewer?) and other guys that seem totally lost. I don’t know whose fault that is (j-slow, KOC, the players), but until that changes, I don’t see the Jazz finishing any playoffs with a W.
Maybe I’m just trying to keep myself from being totally depressed. Who knows? But that’s how I see it right now (1.5 hours past my normal sleep time, kinda tired, and with a lot of pain in my right hand)…

Oh, and thank you.

It’s always weird to be called pretty online by someone you’ve never met.

Dude, go away
You guys are gonna win the series, and possibly the Western Conference and NBA title. Isn’t that enough? Or do you really have to come on this board and be a jacka** about it? You are a perfect example of why everybody hates the Lakers—the majority of their fans are cocky little donkey-holes who spend half their time actually cheering for the Lakers and the other half putting down opposing fans and being obnoxious pieces of sh*t. Enjoy your victory, but do it on your own blog and leave us alone.

Hmmmmmmmm where to start.
A. I am not sure what I said that made me a jackass, but whatever.
B. You hate the Lakers for a lot of other stupid reasons than people like me.
C. “Donkey-holes”… now that’s funny, I’ll have to remember that one.
D. A Jazz fan calling someone else “obnoxious”. Now that’s REALLY funny.
E. Cute dog in your profile. Love Golden Retrievers.

...
A. The fact that you’d come on to this thread, which is supposed to be therapeutic for Jazz fans and point out how happy this thread makes you is not nice. Plus, your multiple snide “See you next year”s on the Game 4 Thread was also rubbing it in a little much.
B. Yes, I do hate the Lakers for other reasons, but the nature of their fans is definitely near the top of the list.
C. Thanks, I guess (unless you’re being sarcastic, in which case, I do what I can to avoid explicitly swearing on a blog that does not encourage it).
D. I am not one of those Jazz fans who you would call obnoxious. I’ve never thrown things at players or referees. I’ve never booed Derek Fisher (or covered my eye to mock him as he was shooting free throws). I’ve never shouted racial epithets (or anything else) at opposing players. When I go to see a Jazz game at an opposing team’s arena, I just cheer for my team, I don’t shout at the home team’s fans and taunt them when my team is winning. I have, however, had to endure Lakers fans yelling at and taunting me and the other fans around me when I go to Jazz home games. So yes, I think I have the right to call them obnoxious when that is in fact true.
E. Thanks. Golden Retrievers are amazing, we can definitely agree on that.
See you tomorrow night.

OK
A. You’re probably right, sore winner on my part.
B. Every team has obnoxious fans as evidenced by your answer to my question D.
C. Not being sarcastic, I thought it was a funny term I had not thought of.
D. In my experience Jazz fans seem to be take a slightly more obnoxious, personal attack, attitude toward losing than most other teams fans. I am sure you feel the same about Laker fans so no point arguing that one.
E. Love dogs, have a 8 yr old chocolate lab myself.

Very dissapointing
You could see early on that Kobe was on, yet they never fully commited to putting AK on him, then they left their 3 point shooters open. When the Jazz were up 7, I was happy, but then the whole game changed, and the Jazz looked content on going on vacation. I was happy witht he first 3 games, fighting to stay in it. They did not do that this game. I don’t think you need to revamp the system, but you need to have one more shooter, Miles and Brewer are not the answer, Brewer is good, but not a shooter, and Miles, I am dissapointed in him, he has shown me nothing, and it was a huge mistake you kept him over Almond, who is a shooter. Koufas should have played in this series, if notihing else his size. They will keep Millsap, Booze, I am ok if he leaves, Okur and Korver we need. Sloan, please play the youngsters more, it is the only way they get experience and get better. You can’t get better warming up the bench. Lets hope we don’t get killed in game 5, or I will really be pissed, but we all know the Jazz this year, when its the biggest game, they fold, so as much as I hate to say this, look for a 30 thrashing.

Don't Feel Too Bad
I think UtesFan89 hit it right on the head in his initial remark that the Lakers are just better this year than the Jazz. I think the Jazz are playing to their capabilites. I think the key was the slump at the end of the regular season (so that you ended up playing the Lakers), the team’s struggles on the road, and the Mehmet Okur injury. Although even if he was 100% healthy, it wouldn’t have mattered much against the Lakers, you would have just lost by fewer points. What I think they need to fix going into next year is their overall defense (not that you can do anything when Kobe is hot), but their defensive statistics overall for the season won’t cut it as far as advancing in the playoffs (or even making the playoffs, if Amare Stoudamire was healthy I doubt they would have made the playoff this year). They also need to get a third star to complement Williams and Boozer or Millsap. A healthy Okur may be that player.

Thoughts from a Laker fan
You guys should be happy that with all the injuries to Boozer, Williams, and recently Okur, you guys still had that hot 15-win streak and came into the playoffs. I can only imagine what it’d be like to be a Suns fan. Or think of what it’s like to be a Rockets fan and never seeing your team get out of the first round (thanks mostly to the Jazz actually).
One thing I wanna bring up though – two years ago when Kobe hit the game-4 winning shot to bring the Lakers up 3-1 vs. the Suns, I was ecstatic, only to be crushed three games later. The suns won the remaining three games and defeated the Lakers after we thought the Lakers had pulled off the upset. I bring this up for two reasons:
1. It ain’t over till it’s over. I’m hoping the Lakeshow don’t take it easy for game 5. It’s been done against the lakers before (being down 3-1 and winning three games in a row)
2. You never know where a team will be next year. The offseason after we lost embarrassingly to the Suns, Kobe demanded to be traded, and I dreaded the thought of the Clippers one day being the superior team in L.A. That would be sad. Instead there was a turnaround of some sorts and now the Lakers are an elite team.
Hope that was therapeutic guys.
by laker on Apr 27, 2009 4:43 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Indeed, it was therapeutic
I remember that series when the Lakers heartbreakingly lost to the Suns. I try and remind myself of that everytime I see the smug look that Kobe and Phil wear all the time. Despite how it may seem, Kobe and Phil (and Lamar) have paid their dues, experienced the pain of losing, and learned what it takes to win in the playoffs. Granted, they did get to take an incredible shortcut by getting showered with gifts like Fisher and Gasol.
I only hope that the Jazz are “learning” from these types of playoff failures (and can get as lucky as the Lakers front office) in coming years.
This is just really disappointing because I think all of us Jazz fans came into this season expecting this team to be contending for a championship. As we head into Game 5 tonight, we are so far from that level it is devastating.

The problem starts at the top
I completely agree with UtesFan89. The Jazz were down 19 at the start of the 4th quarter. Sloan decided, as always, to stick to his offense, which served only to run down the clock, and produce long missed jumpers. Sloan also decided not to press the Lakers until about 2 minutes left-and the Jazz still down 18 or so.
Maybe a 3 point barrage and full court press would have won it for Utah, maybe not, but point is, Sloan never gave the Jazz the chance to win it in the 4th. He didn’t even pull the starters, which will only make them more fatigued tonight.
Don’t expect any drastic changes from Jerry tonight, like:
-Fez, Koof, and Price to play.
-More than 10 three-point attempts. (Even if D-Will and Korver are shooting 50% like last game)
-More than 10 minutes for Harpring, seemingly the only guy besides D-Will & Millsap (and Price) who plays his butt off the whole time.
-A Jazz win.
Sorry HOF Jerry, but methinks it’s time to retire.
