You stay classy TNT

Photo

Name all of the Utah stereotypes you see listed in TNT's gone fishing photo above for the Utah Jazz

Here are mine:

  • Big Love reference
  • FLDS Ladies
  • Deron with the missionary necktie (notice it's on a t-shirt, so it was Shopped on there)
  • Booze with the Y shirt (this one could be the most insulting :) )
  • Jim McMahon (BYU QB)
  • "I can't, I'm Mormon" t-shirt

Digging the bottom of the barrell with this one.

this pisses me

RIGHT the hell off. Make fun of the players, not the state. Or, while you’re at it, why don’t you put Danny Ainge in his hospital bed on there. Because he’s Mormon too! IT’S FUNNY HUR HUR. Frak you, TNT.

Uh, do you think you could draw me like a ninja?

good eye

Yeah, I’m a lifelong Los Angeles resident who loves the Lakers and I thought the whole photo thing was done in extremely poor taste.

low blow

Any respect I had for TNT has gone out the window. This was done in extremely poor taste. I haven’t seen any other gone fishin campaigns that were this mean spirited. To attack a religion so blatantly like this is a low blow. TNT you will be hearing from me!

I wouldnt' react quite so knee-jerk to this

I don’t think Mormonism is being attacked or riiculed here. The Jazz are being ridiculed for losing, and “being Mormon” is coming along with what everyone associates with Utah. Associating a state with being Mormon is not like like associating a state with being inbreds (like my home state of Arkansas). That’s a bit different.

Granted, I’m not a citizen of Utah, this is just my perception. The reactions seems overblown to me. But I understand the sensitivity. I think just because so many Mormon jokes HAVE been made in the spirit of ridicule, it causes any mention of Mormonism which comes along in a moment of humor to look and feel like ridicule.

by Dyl on Apr 28, 2009 5:48 PM MDT reply actions

so how about putting them on snow skis?

If you really want a Utah thing, that’s fine and nobody can even try to be offended.

I'll make it coach.

by MTN on Apr 28, 2009 8:55 PM MDT up reply actions

This isn’t ridiculing because it pokes fun at being mormon…it’s ridiculing because being mormon has nothing to do with Big Love etc. Mormonism has nothing to do with polygamy, and every mormon is not a missionary with a tie or a BYU fan. this was extrememly distasteful.

by JazzFan87 on Apr 30, 2009 11:41 AM MDT up reply actions

not to mention

that this picture was supposed to be about the jazz, and no one on the jazz is even mormon.

by moni on Apr 30, 2009 5:57 PM MDT up reply actions

Sorry

I don’t think it’s all that offensive. I live in Utah, and it’s a quirky little state. People from outside know very little, so they make fun of the stuff that’s easily noticeable on the surface. It’s not really funny, but it doesn’t offend me. It’s really what every person does when they poke fun at Utah. You are all entitled to your opinions. I just wanted to throw another one out there. It’s bad humor, and I expect that from TNT, but it just doesn’t strike me as offensive.

And as for the LA folks up there, GO GIANTS!!!

Annoying and always on TV? :)

by Dyl on Apr 28, 2009 5:49 PM MDT up reply actions

it's just the perpetuation of the stereotype

stooping to the lowest common denominator isn’t funny. There’s lots to make fun of about Utah, you’re right, it is a quirky little state. But the same old Big Love/polygamy references are seriously played out. And what is the point of dragging in McMahon in a Mormon t-shirt? Dude has zero connection to the Jazz and only a tangential connection to the state because of BYU.

The focus of the picture is not, “look, the Jazz players are fishing, lolz” but “LOOK UTAH HAS MORMONS AND LOTS OF WIVES AND THAT ONE QUARTERBACK LOLZ and oh by the way there’s D-Will and Boozer.”

Moreover, every single thing in the picture is a reference to Mormons. Big Love and FLDS ladies? Mormon fundamentalists. Deron in a tie? Mormon missionary. Boozer in a BYU shirt? Mormon school. McMahon in a Mormon-referenced t-shirt. And interestingly, the one and only thing that isn’t referencing Mormons? TNT’s own Kenny Smith. Commence to chin stroking.

Yeah, I’m overreacting. But I’m sick of the stereotype. It isn’t funny. I would rather they had made fun of the quirks of the players themselves. Like AK standing with another woman while his wife looks on, as a reference to his once-yearly “freebie.” Or Carlos Boozer wearing three different team logos to indicate his opt-out status. Or Jerry Sloan riding a tractor in the background. Those would have been funny, or at least appropriate.

Uh, do you think you could draw me like a ninja?

To be honest, I probably wouldn’t have noticed that other boat if you hadn’t pointed this out, especially if I had been watching on TV. My focus would’ve been on the giant players’ heads.

Having said that, I’m not even from SLC and I’m tired of all the kneejerk Mormon jokes, so I feel your pain.

by MTN on Apr 28, 2009 8:55 PM MDT up reply actions

if the lakers lost

the gone fishing boat would have had starlets and bling, and hollywood stereotypes (propagated in all laker opponents’ blogs as well), etc… they go with the image which is in the common consciouslness, whether realistic or not…..i would have looked at that stereotype and said it was not representative, but they’re not trying to represent what’s real, but what is expected.

by dach on Apr 28, 2009 7:28 PM MDT reply actions   1 recs

i mean seriously

what does the rest of the country know about utah EXCEPT mormons?

by dach on Apr 28, 2009 7:35 PM MDT up reply actions

I see your point

I get that for most people, LA = Hollywood and Utah = Mormons. That makes sense. But when you make jokes about LA and Hollywood, you offend nobody. When you make jokes about Utah and Mormons, you offend all Utahns, because Mormons are sick of being misrepresented, and non-Mormons are sick of being roped in with Mormons just because they live in Utah. Especially when the jokes you’re making don’t even apply to mainstream Mormons (Big Love and FLDS and polygamy).

To answer your question about what the rest of the country knows about Utah except Mormons… well, what about the basketball team you just watched? There’s plenty to make fun of about the Jazz without making every single joke in the picture about Mormons.

Uh, do you think you could draw me like a ninja?

by Shums on Apr 28, 2009 7:54 PM MDT up reply actions

I get offended by jokes about Hollywood

Because I don’t drive the crappy BMWs they show, I only drive Ferraris and wear $2000 sunglasses, not the $1000 ones they alway show, and my clothes are not Polo Ralph Lauren, I only wear Armani suits. It’s so stereotypical the way they show those cheerleaders on the Lakers girls they are nothing compared to the supermodels I hang out with, and I would not be caught dead with those B list celebrities they show like Andy Garcia, I only deal with the A-Listers like Denzel and Jack.

well played. I hope you got the point I was making at least though.

Want to know if something is really offensive or not? Try keeping the same premise but substitutiing the terms.

Imagine the Knicks just got knocked out of the playoffs. Now the boat is called the Oy Vey. D-Will is wearing a yamika. The T-Shirt on says “I can’t, I’m Jewish”. And the boat is full of bankers and women with hairy armpits.

Think TNT might be in a little trouble??? Yeah I think so too.

Not only is this picture wholly offensive...

…but part of it is completely irrelevant. Pretty sure many of those women pictured on the Big Love boat there were from the FLDS compound that was raided in TEXAS, not Utah. Hope they were also in the San Antonio “Gone Fishin’” picture, and will be in the Houston and Dallas ones too, because they’re just as relevant to those teams and locations are they are to the Utah Jazz.

Congrats, TNT. Not only are you unfunny and playing into ridiculous stereotypes, but you’re idiots.

(Though I agree with BBJ that the BYU t-shirt may be the most insulting part. Go Utes.)

I know that Utah is the Beehive State.

And therefore, they are infested with bees.

I don’t know how you guys deal with it. Bees are scary, especially in packs.

Before each game, please remember to feed the bats.

Maybe because TNT

is owned by Ted Turner, who is biased against Christians and Mormons. TNT should apologize for this, it is very offensive to Mormons.

What if...

Will I see Joe Johnson and Charles Barkley throwing dice, eating chicken and waffles, and partying at the Gold Club?

What about Dwyane Wade and Pat Riley venturing off into Biscayne Bay on a bedroom door that is floating on tires and inner tubes as the Coast Guard chases them down?

Then what?

Make it happen baby: Cubs, Jaguars, FSU, Jazz, Thrashers.
