Korver makes it sound like he is thinking out of Utah - his agent will talk to teams to see if they want him. - Please opt out - please

From David Locke's Twitter. How would everyone feel about losing Korver? (Except Danielle, I think we know how she would feel.) Does the extra cap space help? Does it free up minutes for Ronnie B/Miles? Is that a good thing? I can't really wrap my head around why Locke is so happy about it (although I didn't listen to the show, so maybe he explained about this?)

Almond will come a lot cheaper than Kyle, and is just as adept at weak side shot blocking, comming off of screens, missing shots in the clutch, making free throws, and being less than average on defense.
I’d rather not lose kyle, and i think that he knows that playing in utah with a good system and great PG is an advantage that he’s not going to get playing on almost every other team.

Totally agree.
Korver would be silly to opt out, IMO.

yeah
I remember when he first came here he was amazed that ‘if you passed the ball that you will probably see the ball again on the same posession’. He was so used to play for a non-Jazz team where you were put in a situation where you almost HAD to shoot the ball when you touched it. Hopefully he recognizes that when he and his agent talk about prospective teams.
let’s not forget that he’s probably looking more for years/security instead of a huge pay raise — so that does not prevent him from re-signing with the Jazz even if he opts out. You know that he and Deron are tight in their off-court stuff, I’m sure Deron can talk him into staying if the contract wasn’t too crazy.

Korver’s one of my favorite players on the Jazz – I’d definitely enjoy the games less without his dead-eye shooting. And he’s learning to play fine defense — going up against the best 2s and 3s in the West will do that for you.

I see him as one of the key parts of our rotation
that we should keep building around.

This made me very sad,
and almost ruined my day. In the future please only post things about KK staying. Thank you.

Considering the team’s financial situation … I think it’s very good news if Korver does opt out.
That said, from a basketball perspective, if Korver goes, who on the perimeter off that bench do you rate highly? That looks a scary situation. They’ll need to find some replacements.
by NBR on May 17, 2009 2:34 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
start AK instead of CJ
bring CJ off the bench in the gunner for hire role. that’s an easy fix, but I admit that it does not ‘fix’ losing korver.

Admittedly, I’m not a CJ Miles fan, so his presence isn’t particularly reassuring to me. I’d also like to see Harpring take a smaller role next year, so again, he isn’t a reassuring figure for me either.
The idea of a Knight – Miles – Harpring trio of the bench at PG – SG – SF is something I don’t like that look of. I think that’s a weak bench on the perimeter. And of course, Knight is a free agent, so that picture could turn out worse.
I think the team would have a lot of work to do in free agency to upgrade those positions for next season.

agreed
no one wins with knight/Ceejay/Harpring.
I’m just glad that I don’t have KOC’s job . . . it’s not going to be an easy one in the next few months.

I just listened to the interview — I didn’t think it sounded like Korver was going to opt out — Just that his agent was searching to see if it was worth opting out or not, and that he won’t make his mind up about opting out or not until his agent gets that information … and if after that, his agent feels he’s best off opting out.
Less optimistic about this happening after listening to the interview

Korver=Vujacik
Is that a fair statement? I mean as players, of course. Not as people, not as fashion statements, not as contracts… just as players. Aren’t they pretty much the same guy?
I'll make it coach.

They are fairly similar, production wise, if you are looking at market value.
But vujacic has proven himself in the playoffs to be a killer from 3. He has shot 40% from beyond the arc in 45 playoff games. Korver has never shot over 30% in the playoffs until this last year. Also, Vujacic is much more of a defensive pest than Korver. I am not saying that he is better, but he can throw people off their game better.
That is what is fairly surprising about Korver’s revelation that he is considering opting out. He won’t make more money anywhere this season. If he opts out, he is gone, and if it isn’t because he doesn’t want to play for the Jazz, then he will just simply be seeking a more competitive team. He says something in his interview about only having so many years to play in the league and I think he is talking about playing for a title. He knows he has enough money, he has said as much and gives away a lot of his money to charities. But he probably knows that this team isn’t going to get any better for next year.
My prediction: He will find a team that will pay him a little bit less per year, but for 3-4 years, where he can play for a contender. And to be honest, guys like Korver now are a dime a dozen. He shot the 59th best 3 pt % in the league this year. That is why this news is good for the Jazz. Korver is an average player playing for better than average money and the flexibility will be good for the Jazz. Then again, if he can’t find other teams, he will be back next year and I will cheer him on.

In fact, here is a list of people we could sign outright for similar or much less money, who would be as or more productive:
Michael Finley
Steve Novak
Wally Szczerbiak
JR Smith
Anthony Parker
Von Wafer
Jarvis Hayes
Mike James

Two issues:
1. If Vujacik shoots better from the arc, it’s got to have something to do with how many attempts are essentially uncontested because you know he’s shooting off Kobe and Pau passing out of a double-team. Maybe Korver could hit just as well given the same spacing. Also, we shouldn’t overlook Korver’s FT%. Moreso, last year, but he is a luxury in the waning minutes of games with a small lead.
2. Except for JR Smith, I don’t think I would want any of those guys over Korver; and I don’t think any of them are analogous to KK. Finley and Wally are old. Von Wafer plays a totally different game (almost like Brewer from the bit I’ve seen). And, well, I confess, I don’t know too much about those others. Fill me in, I guess. Are you just looking at PPG? Or is there a qualitative similarity among those players?
I'll make it coach.

Here's what I am looking at.
Korver- 24 mpg, 9 ppg, 39% 3 point, 88% FT- average defender $5 million year
Novak- 16 mpg, 7 ppg, 43 % 3 point, 91% FT- less than average defender- $900,000 – He’s also 6’ 10"
Anthony Parker- 33mpg, 11ppg, 39% 3 point, 84% ft- average to better than average defender- $4 million- Candace’s bro
Jarvis Hayes- 25 mpg, 9ppg, 39% 3 point, 80% career ft- better than average defender- $2 million
All of these players are free agents. I just listed their salaries from last season, but most of them would be able to be signed for cheaper. I am not saying that they are all better than Korver, but I think Korver is very replaceable. I like Korver, but he is replaceable.

Candace’s bro… useless info, right? Not hyping him up or down because of it?

Yes. Useless info.
I actually think he is the least likely to get for a league minimum, so the chance of getting him, is probably pretty low.

one other issue
I have more chance of playing for the Jazz than JR Smith ever will have!

Korver is not opting out....
What I think Korver was saying in the interview was that he wants to be a free agent next year when all the big names are moving. He said it would be exciting to be a complimentary player to some of those names. I interpret that as he won’t opt out be don’t expect him to be looking for a contract extension. Next year if given the chance he will bolt to play with Jame or Wade if he has the chance. MTN made a good observation regarding Vujacik that applies here … what percentage of 3pt do you think Korver could shoot playing with James and having the time to count the seams on the ball every time he shot?
by Frank5 on May 18, 2009 11:41 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
He'd be an upgrade for James over Wally Z.

Wally shot 44% from the 3 point line this season. Wally is more prolific and accurate than Korver.
And Korver shoots most of his shots just as open as Vujacic, in my opinion. He gets good looks.

Wally makes Korver look like Ron Artest on D.

Thank you
Wally would get picked first in Thursday night church ball. But at this point in his career, he’s a Vespa playing in a league of hogs and rice rockets.
For real, though, 44% on how many attempts? And, again, as with Vujacik, I think if we rewound the tape, you’d find a lot more open 3s on LeBron and Kobe’s teams than on Boozer’s team.
I'll make it coach.
by MTN on May 18, 2009 10:10 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
According to yahoo sports
Wally has only shot as good as 44% from 3pt land once… in 2001. Both Korver and Wally are both career 40% shooters on 3pts. And since Wally is one of the worst defenders in the NBA…….
I was going somewhere with this, but then I just thought I would love to see Wally and Booz play one-on-one. Booz dunking uncontested and screaming “And one” and Wally shooting uncontested three’s and looking for ref while tapping his arm like he just got fouled. They could put it on a Nike commercial in slow motion with dramatic music.
