Monday Workouts
Morning: UNC PF Tyler Hansbrough, Villanova forward Dante Cunningham, Pittsburgh guard LeVance Fields, Southern California forward Taj Gibson, Arizona State forward Jeff Pendergraph and Boston College guard Tyrese Rice.
Noon: Wisconsin forward Marcus Landry, Georgia Tech forward Gani Lawal, Washington State guard Taylor Rochestie, Baylor forward Kevin Rogers, Utah State forward Gary Wilkinson and North Dakota State guard Ben Woodside.
First rounders: Hansbrough, Gibson?, Pendergraph?, Lawal?
We all know about Hansbrough. Personally, I see him as a taller Matt Harpring. Won't wow you, but is consistent. And doesn't seem to have issues playing "physical". Unlike Harpring, he still has knees.
Lawal... he's like Millsap out of college, but maybe a bit more raw offensively. If 'Sap leaves, he could be a potential replacement (though we'd then have to get more offensive production from the other guys on the court).
The other guys I haven't done much research on yet (I know there's at least one person here who's a huge fan of Rice)... I'll have to look into them a bit more. Most of them seem like 2nd rounders or undrafted FAs that make the summer league team at best.

I like Hansbrough
We dont need potential at this point…we need a guy to step in and step up right away….we already have Koufos, Fes, and Miles…..who we are waiting to “potentialize”…..Lets get Hansbrough in here and he can backup Sap when Loozer Boozer leaves….Tyler can step up and probably get hustle points and hustle boards just like Sap did….Im tired of watching overhyped overpayed PF’s who watch guys score on them…..

I also really like Taj Gibson from USC
Very good defender down low….something we lacked badly. I wouldnt be dissapointed with that guy either.

Gibson I wouldn't mind
Hansbrough I’m not really high on.
We’ll have to see though… if he can step in and help right away, I guess I’ll live with it.

maybe I'm getting suckered
by his rising stock in workouts/mock drafts, but I’m starting to warm to Psycho T a little bit. I mean, at the very least, he’ll give a ton of effort, right? I dunno. Maybe he wouldn’t be so bad.
Uh, do you think you could draw me like a ninja?
Harpring gives a ton of effort too...
doesn’t make the team all that better…

Harpring has no knees.
At least Psycho T is young and tall.
Uh, do you think you could draw me like a ninja?
A healthy Harpring makes a big difference.
Harpring got screwed in the playoffs….the refs tore him up. He was making Odom work very hard for everything. I loved Harprings defense intensity….if only it rubbed off…..

Sadly
we’ve seen for a couple of years that it doesn’t rub off.
And if rubbing was involved, j-slow might not like it.

He's Kevin Love, but not big enough to be Kevin Love
What I mean is that he has the same skill set as K-Love, but not the power and size and piss that Kevin Love has. It’s already been said, and it’s absolutely true: Tyler Hansborough is the second coming of Mark Madsen. Not a poor man’s Madsen or a Rich man’s madsen or madsen-but, or madsen-except… HE IS MADSEN.
That’s not meant to say he’s worthless, but let’s not imagine double doubles out of this guy.
I'll make it coach.
Not even close!
Mark Madsen averaged 11pts and 8reb in his career at Stanford…..Hansbrough career at UNC is 20pts 8reb. 20pts a game for a 4 year run is really good especially at North Carolina where he had to share the rock with other scorers.
Tyler Hansbrough is 6’9 250lbs….that is not small at all. That is bigger than Paul Millsap. Tyler also has a plethora of low post scoring moves. He can shake and shimmy, he can also dribble the ball pretty well for a big guy. His skills test at the NBA draft combine compared to Blake Griffin….very close.
The Mark Madsen comparisons are very unreal and unfair. Mark Madsen is a tool. He couldnt score at Stanford…he definately isnt gonna score in the NBA…..But he does have one thing Utah would be jealous of…..a Championship Ring.

I watched Tyler Hansbrough play in person for the last two years and although I have also warmed up to him, I am not convinced he will be a good pro.
The thing that scares me the most about him is that the Tarheels were basically the Phoenix Suns of college basketball. They used their depth to run teams up and down the court and they averaged an extra 20-30 possessions each game over other teams. But Hansbrough only averaged 8 rebounds last season. That’s less than impressive. Paul Millsap averaged 13 rebounds a game over his 4 year career which is more impressive than 20 points a game, because time and time again rebounds translate better to the pros than scoring.
The reason is, and it brings me to my second point about my concerns for Hansbrough, is that up until last season, Hansbrough did 95% of his scoring within 10-15 feet of the basket. Critics have said that he has a 20 foot jumper because he hit 39% from the college 3 pointer this season, but for one thing, 39% isn’t great, and second, before this last season, he attempted 3 total 3 pointers. He doesn’t have range and I don’t think he will be able to score within 10 feet of the hope solely and consistently. So until he proves me, and many other wrong, I don’t know if his game will translate to the pros.
He might though. He does hustle and he may learn to get putbacks and such though. He isn’t a great rebounder yet, though and he doesn’t have the low post moves of Griffin, so the fact that Chad Ford is in love with Hansbrough’s athleticism isn’t a new thing for him to do and it doesn’t convince me of anything yet. And I think Griffin had like 4 extra inches on his vertical.
The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.
Oh no doubt Griffin is better...
Dont get me wrong…I wasnt comparing the two as far as game play. Griffin would destroy Hansbrough one on one. He is just much more of a strong physical presence. He hit his freaking head on the backboard during a dunk on my team Syracuse in the tourny. Compare that to Hansbrough’s dunk attempt….lol.
No doubt Hansbrough has his question marks….BUT….I think his pro’s outweigh his con’s for a 20th pick in the draft. If we were drafting in the top 10 I would say no way…..but at our spot we need a good proven guy to step in at PF to spell Millsap. I dont think there would be any better option there for us.
I dont see him coming in and scoring 20pts and grabbing 8reb in the NBA….but I could see him being a servicable backup for a few years and then stepping up to being a starter one day. ….very Millsap-esque.
"You can live for Nothing or die for Something, it's your call" - John Rambo
THey are equally stiff.
And “bigger than Millsap” is a silly thing to brag about since the only real problem for Millsap is that he’s too small. 6’9" in today’s NBA is a nice sized swing man. 250, well, I guess that’s alright. But his post-up game will go nowhere in the NBA. Against the Lakers (and what else matters?) who does he guard? Bynum? No way. Odom? No way. Gasol? He’d get jump-hooked to death. Will he come away with 8 rebounds? Sure. But who cares. His +/- against those guys will kill us….just like, hmmmm…. We wouldn’t be in any better position with Hansborough on the floor than we were this year. It’s up to Koof or Fes to suddenly figure out where to be on offense so Sloan will let them body-up against the west’s bigs, esp. LA and Portland.
Look, I’m not saying don’t take TH. I’m just saying what you get with him is essentially what you get with Mark Madsen, a stiff, undersized college has been. If he’s the best player on the board, take him. But our fortunes won’t change on his account. Now if he was Kevin Love, he’d be a bit bigger, and a bit meaner, and I think you’ve got a game changer there. But TH isn’t nearly as pissed off as Kevin Love. Of course, this is all speculation, but I stand by the comparisons I’ve made. With respect, M_G.
I'll make it coach.
We all have different opinions...
The only way we will know is if the Jazz get TH and we can find out what he is made of. Same for any pick we get.

I guess you wanted Lawal?
I bet he figures with Griffin, Hansbrough, and Blair gone he will get picked much higher next year.
"You can live for Nothing or die for Something, it's your call" - John Rambo
Yeah...
Sadly, he probably won’t last till the 2nd round next year.
And our first rounder, barring some horrible season, will be going to Minnesota.
I guess the best option would be the Jazz filling the PF need this year, and it not being a problem.

We have the knicks 1st rounder next year, right?

Yep
but that’ll be too high to take Lawal, I’d imagine.
