2009 NBA Draft - Open Thread
We will always remember Larry Knight.
The last time we had the #20 pick was in 1979 and the Jazz selected
via hoopedia.nba.com
I was looking up information about him and came across Tim Buckley's article (which goes into a lot of detail and which I hadn't read yet). According to Tom Nissalke,
He was a so-called defensive specialist, which, translated, meant he couldn't score, I mean, he couldn't shoot the ball at all. It was just a bad pick.
Let's hope it's a bit better this time around.
Here's the first round draft history for the Jazz:
| YEAR | PICK | PLAYER | PPG | RPG | APG | Draft Postion | Count | |

| 1975 | 7 | Rich Kelley | 7.6 | 7 | 2.6 | |||
| 17.58824 | Average Pick | |||||||
| 18.5 | Median Pick |
We've mostly picked right outside the lottery. When we have got single-digit picks, we've done pretty good with them - Deron Williams, Darrell Griffith, Dominique Wilkins, and Thurl Bailey. Not bad at all.
Let the rumors and wishes fly.

Biggest busts by team
http://nba.fanhouse.com/2009/06/25/biggest-nba-draft-busts-by-team/
20. Jazz: Luther Wright, 18th, 1993
BO-RING. The Jazz nailed Stockton (16th, 1984) and Malone (13th, 1985) and from then until forever, the only time they’ve needed to step up and nail a big pick, they pulled Deron Williams. You could argue Raul Lopez in 2001 was a bust, but he wasn’t found at a rest stop “banging cans and smashing in windows.” Also, little known fact: Wright gets paid $153k every year for 25 years.

Locke reported a bit ago that the Jazz are discussions for T-Mac?
1320 KFAN – David Locke: The Jazz have been very active in the trade market. I beleive the Jazz are one of the teams that Darryl Morey is talking about that are actively talking to them about McGrady. The Jazz are very limited in what they can do right because most of their talent are free agents or have opt outs.

I have Hansbrough prop bet with a buddy I made a few months back...
I have 25 or lower (not gonna happen) and he has 15 or higher in two separate bets.
Yikes on that bet – I might get scooped.
Yeah
at worst, he falls to #20 it seems.
But Indy at 13, PHX at 14 (especially if they trade Amar’e too) and Detroit at 15 could all look to him

Rumors from DX...
Minnesota appeared to be playing it cool in regards to Rubio early on, but has emerged as a major suitor for his services this evening, which will make things very interesting leading up to the #3 pick. OKC seems to be asking for Al Jefferson right now…will they settle on Kevin Love?
Right now it appears that Oklahoma City is leaning towards picking Rubio and keeping him as a trading chip to potentially use this summer. A few sources we spoke with mentioned that they still expect Rubio to end up in New York when it’s all said and done.
Oklahoma City is also active in trade talk with Phoenix, with their main target appearing to be Robin Lopez. They are reportedly offering Phoenix their 2010 unprotected pick back in return for Lopez, but that seems like a very high price for the Suns to pay.
Sacramento seems to be leaning towards Tyreke Evans from what we’re hearing, and may have even told him as much.

Living in Tampa, I hear lots of Magic talk on the radio… So I can probably provide a little insight.
Obviously, Vince is a huge star, and I’m sure many magic fans are doing back flips of the epcot globe right now. However, there is also lots of skepticism on how Vince and Howard will work together.
I know one popular sports talk host called the trade “Terrible”, saying that Vince has always had an inconsistant jumper, and that his style of slashing to the hoop would not mix well with Howard’s game.
Meanwhile, the Nets get Alston, Courtney Lee, and a player I can’t remember while freeing major cap room. I hear there is a certain Player that the Jay Z wants to lure to NJ in 2010.
so what about turkoglu?
does this trade mean that turk is gone and they won’t TRY to resign him. is this trade kind of a middle finger to turk?
We could have used Vince or Shaq or Crawford or Jefferson....
We have a good token in next years New York pick…..I would rather trade it and get some one proven then put my stock in some rookie.

Here is a question. Lets say that hell freezes, and KOC makes a deal that brings T-Mac (out of all people) to SLC.
Do you like that trade? How will Jazz fans accept T-Mac?? That is just to wierd, which is why it won’t happen.

i don't know if....
…i would like tmac. guy hasn’t gotten past the first round. so he doesn’t bring any deep playoff experience. has never played 80+ games. over the past 4 years has had 2 sub 50 games played. i am tired of injury plagued athletes. give me someone who produces.
so i am not entirely on the bringing tmac to utah boat.
At least
He would finally say Deron William’s name right.
Seriously, it depends on T-Mac’s health. if his knee is better, then he I think he’s worth a shot.
why did that guy say rubio likes pasta?
does he think spain and italy are the same place? ( -1000 to American public school system)

With the Clippers now having a logjam in the front court they can afford to deal Kaman or Camby…..I think we should go for Kaman…..good rebounder and shot blocker that we need.

funny thing is...
IF the Jazz were picking #1, I wouldn’t put it past Sloan to get Hansbrough. I can see him slamming his draft chart on the ground.
according to locke
the nuggets actually improved on defense post-camby and the clips d got worse with camby
it's hard to understand
but d went up with camby in LA because camby didn’t play defense on screen/rolls and never came out to defend shooters.

Locke points out, three good PGs left:
The top three points left are Holliday, Teague and Lawson. If either Indiana at 13,
76ers at 17 or Hawks at 19 don’t take a PG, we’re left with one of the above.
Locke has a wonderful grasp on the obvious, but I found it insightful

Another scouting report
...
He is very confident and has the heart of a winner. He is not afraid to take over a game at the end.
The problem is his lack of speed and quickness. He does not have the athleticism of his younger competition. He does compensate for it with his height, length and dribbling skills. He operates at several speeds, has a nice cross-over and hesitation dribble. He moves in unpredictable bursts. He has a decent first step, good enough that a defender must foul him to get to the ball. However, he has shown that he can be a turnover machine which is very scary considering the competition in the NBA.
He can score. His free-throw shooting attests to his ability to shoot. He tends to go for the high difficulty shot, but he makes them, especially the floaters while he is flying towards the basket. He seems to have a bit of a mid-range game.
I did not notice an ability to get horizontal separation on his shot. He seems more likely to just shoot over or around you. I am concerned about that tre which looks like a throw from behind the back. But it goes in at a 36% clip which is not bad considering the other weapons he brings to the table.
This kid is different. He is not a standout in terms of the athleticism he has, but he has a nice package of weaponry. I really like his ability and potential for controlling the end of games. I also like his ability to play man-to-man defense and his willingness to put pressure on his man.

NBAdraft.net on the Jazz taking Maynor
The run of point guards continues, as Utah tabs Eric Maynor to back up Deron Williams. He doesn’t have the measurables of some of the other top-flight points, but he might be the most advanced pure point guard in this draft. He possesses tremendous leadership abilities and has that innate sense of what it takes to play the one-spot. He also made a name for himself hitting game-winning shots for Virginia Commonwealth in the NCAA Tournament. Maynor and Williams could turn into one of the league’s best point-guard tandems right away, and he gives Utah extra roster flexibility, as Williams can easily play 2-guard against most teams.

More Maynor
http://www.collegehoopsnet.com/eric-maynor-nba-draft-profile-165709
Scouting Report: The best "true" point guard in the draft.
Strengths: Great passer with terrific court vision. Throws creative passes and a great alley-oop passer. Great at pushing the pace. Can get into the paint and finish with layups and runners/floaters. Clutch performer – not afraid to take the big shot. Good defender. Very quick player. Experienced player. Has range on his jumper out past the three-point line. Can be an explosive scorer.
Weaknesses: Didn’t play in a major conference. Needs to add size/strength for the rigours of the NBA. Not an athletic freak like some other prospects. Will be 22-years-old before the draft so he probably doesn’t possess as much "upside" as some other prospects.
Projected 2009 Draft Range: Mid to late first round pick.
Consensus: Eric Maynor might be the safest bet for a team looking to pick up a point guard in this year’s draft. While he might not have as high a ceiling as some other guys, he definitely has a very good chance to enjoy a long career as a NBA point guard.

A bit on Brockman, just in case
Positives: While undersized for the power forward position, Brockman plays with good basketball IQ and is a tough, physical inside player who compensates for size issues with great strength, good balance and a tenacious attitude crashing the boards (first player in school history to lead the team in rebounds four times and the third to lead the Pac-10 in that category three-straight seasons) … Lunch-pail type who plays with a relentless motor … Strong inside shooter who consistently finishes around the basket (ranks second in school history with 1,805 points and ninth with a 53.4 field-goal percentage) … Likes to use his powerful frame to intimidate other forwards in the paint, as he is quick to gain position under the boards, especially on the offensive glass, where he registered 487 of his 1,283 career rebounds and will not hesitate to use his body to execute a block or box out a bigger opponent … Dominant presence in the post (converted more than 52 percent of his offensive rebounds into points) … Shows good court vision and is comfortable doing the little things (defense) without needing to have the ball in his hands … Strong, immovable object when he gains position under the rim, showing excellent rebounding skills off both sides of the glass … Lack of size is a concern, but he is a tenacious defender who uses his frame and lateral agility well to attack the basket as a cutter, drawing contact along the way … Has shown good consistency working in the post, as he has the loose hips needed to put in the turn-around jumper … Generates a strong drive to the basket, but is also capable of delivering a smooth spot-up jumper … Showed in the Portsmouth Tournament that he is capable of connecting his shots from the 15-20-foot range and demonstrated the release point and arch on his three-point attempts to be effective from that area at the NBA level … Is not the type who will make costly fouls, even though he plays a very aggressive game (has good court vision and basketball IQ) … Does a nice job of using his hands and throwing his elbows around to clear out the crowd in the paint and attacks the glass with the attitude that every rebound is his … Needs to improve his vertical leap (poor shot blocker, with just 18 blocks in 131 games encompassing 3,760 minutes), but has the standing reach, length and upper body power to out-muscle most opponents for the ball … Plays the defensive side of the game much like Chicago Ben Wallace – punish and dominate … Especially effective with his timing on the offensive boards, getting quite a few points on put-backs … Uses his body like a brick wall when asked to hold ground and box out in the post … Loves one-on-one confrontations, knowing his strength will let him drive to the basket at will … Has developed an efficient baby hook shot and when given room, he can also deliver a fluid reverse lay-up, thanks to his hesitation moves.
Negatives: Too short to play power forward in the NBA and needs to continue to work on improving his athleticism (especially his leaping ability) as his 6’7" wingspan is just adequate for a frontcourt player … Lacks range along the perimeter and is woefully untested there, having attempted just one three-pointer in his career … His touch working in the post is still a work in progress, but he has shown steady improvement … Good inside defender, but is sluggish moving his feet to get out on the perimeter opponent … Lacks the speed you look for in a possible shift to small forward and is a few inches shorter than you’d want in a power forward without great leaping ability … Does a good job of drawing contact, but has poor shooting mechanics from the foul line (61.2 percent free-throw shooter) … Has a nice release point, but needs to follow through better in order to improve his shot accuracy from mid range.
Compares To: LUIS SCOLA, Houston — Always in a supporting role, Brockman would not have it any other way, as he is a Scola/Kurt Rambis clone who takes pride in his rebounding skills and ability to get the offensive putbacks while physically boxing out anyone that gets in his way. He is a smart player who won’t make foolish mistakes, despite playing with good aggression. Like Scola and Rambis, he will make a nice living as a defender and situational substitute at a variety of front court positions earlier in his career.

Ford's full thing on the draft pick
I thought they might go with Sam Young here, but I have to admit that I love this pick for the Jazz. They needed a backup for Deron Williams, and Maynor is perfect for Utah as one of the most NBA-ready players in the draft. He has a high basketball IQ and great leadership qualities. The Jazz fill a need and get a guy who I think is the most underrated player in the draft.

The Jazz selected Virginia point guard Eric Maynor with the No. 20 pick of the 2009 NBA draft.
Maynor is a work in progress defensively and he isn’t particularly athletic, but he has a high basketball IQ and enough savvy to run an NBA offense. Expect Utah to work him slowly into their rotation as a backup for Deron Williams.

Maynor was a nice get for the Jazz. Blair was a great value get for San Antonio.
Jazz will take Delaney from UAB in the second round. Or Tony Gaffney from UMass.

Suton has a very good face-up game, with range that must be respected. He is also more agile than he appears and was respectable in the post even though that probably won’t translate to the NBA.

A starter for most of his four-year career in East Lansing, Suton saved some of his best performances for last, averaging 19.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in Michigan State’s wins over Kansas and Louisville in the regionals of the NCAA tournament to help propel his team to the Final Four. The Spartans eventually reached the title game, where Suton managed 17 points and 11 rebounds in their loss to North Carolina. The Bosnian center may be hoping to ride the buzz from his good postseason to a spot in the second round of this draft, but it’s unclear if he’ll be chosen. Suton’s size is nothing special by NBA standards, and his strength and quickness don’t match up with most of the league’s big men. His intelligent play and solid rebounding ability could be what gives him a chance professionally

50. Goran Suton — That almost seemed like a foregone conclusion. Goran Suton in Utah? It makes way too much sense, doesn’t it? He’s a perfect Jerry Sloan guy and should provide solid support behind Mehmet Okur at the center spot.

Suton... yikes!
http://www.miamiherald.com/600/story/983851.html
Suton remembers hearing bullets and bombs as a 6-year-old, when his parents called him in from playing soccer with friends. Soon thereafter, his father decided to send the family to Serbia. Suton remembers a frantic car ride, avoiding crossfire, and a 12-hour wait for what was the final flight out on a military plane with no seats and packed with frightened, desperate passengers.
Several years later, though, threats of an attack on Serbia forced the family back to Sarajevo, where Suton’s childhood home was riddled with bullet holes, and the yard had land mines hidden beneath grass that had grown to 5 feet.

DX on Suton
Goran Suton is easily the most unique player on this list, and it won’t be his offensive skill set that keeps him from getting drafted.
After an impressive NCAA Tournament run, Goran Suton decided to decline attending the Portsmouth Invitational, but the numbers he put up during his final year at Michigan State make him standout in our analysis. Getting a fairly small 10.3 possessions per game, Sutton’s 3.3 jump shots per game were only one-tenth of a shot less than the other eight centers on our list combined. Not only does Suton shoot the ball from the outside, he does it well –ranking first amongst all our post players at 1.05 PPP. A below average finisher (1.19 PPP) who only gets 1.7 possessions per game in the post, Suton is the type of center that can spread the floor for a small back to the basket threat while running the pick and roll (.9 PPP) and rebounding the ball well on both ends. Suton isn’t an ideal athlete—he struggles to finish around the basket as mentioned, and doesn’t get fouled on a good percentage of his shots (11.8%), but he’s a skilled, heady player

DX on Maynor
Eric Maynor falls somewhere in between Stephen Curry and Darren Collison in terms of his numbers, as he was a very high usage point guard, but still was able to remain fairly efficient—which is a very good sign. His 21.2 possessions per game place him 3rd in that category, but his overall PPP of .99 ranks a very respectable 6th. Maynor’s best quality appears to be his short range game, he got to the rim 8 times per game and posted a PPP of 1.12 as a finisher. That’s slightly above average, but few players on this list utilize the same mix of floaters and scoops that Maynor does, and those types of shots have a much greater degree of difficulty than the average layup. Maynor didn’t fall below the average in nearly any category, usually hovering around the middle of the pack, and his isolation PPP of 1.01 stood out amongst this group. The team that drafts Maynor will be getting a player that obviously knows his limitations and can play a number of roles well, but might not stand out in any one area immediately.

I feel sanguine about our draft picks.
They don’t really solve big issues, but even if they simply take the places of Brevin Knight and Jarron Collins, that improves our team. Not, like, a lot, but some.
Uh, do you think you could draw me like a ninja?

San Antonio just goes for the best player available and it pays off.
They had the best draft as far as getting value for where they picked.

They also made a trade for Richard Jefferson
the Jazz wouldn’t trade for a starter if all it was going to cost them was a 2nd rounder
