HURRRY BBJ -

We need to establish f-word usage parameters before Booze opts-in, just to manage the immanent barrage. Are we suspending the F-word ban for, say, a 24 hour period? Or should we just use F%&$ and F&$%ing and that dumbf#$%?

Despite Boozer's lack of physicality on the defensive end ...

I would be worried about your hitman. Booze has been conserving energy (by not wasting it on defense) and might just take out your hitman.

Thinking about it...

I don’t think I’ve ever actively wanted a player on any of my favorite teams to leave. It’s kind of strange, but that’s how it is.

by MelMan2002 on Jun 30, 2009 3:57 PM MDT reply actions

Prediction....

The Jazz are going to lose Okur. They are going to let him walk and let Koof start at center next season with either Frenz or Gotat as back-up.

I think the Jazz are going to give what they would have spent with Memo to Millsap.

Here is a question….. I love Millsap, but he is going to be a reserve againt this season with boozer coming back. Do you pay 8 million for a reserve?

I say yes, partly because I don’t see Boozer signing an extension with Utah.

by brock38 on Jun 30, 2009 3:57 PM MDT reply actions

If you re-sign 'Sap though

to be a back-up, how does he take it (even if it’s for a season)?

Does he hate the Jazz? Does he hate Booze? j-slow?
And how does it affect his play, knowing that he could be a starter elsewhere?

I think Okur is more expendable than 'Sap

But for toughness and rebounding you need to keep ’Sap.

Lose both: Lottery-bound

Lose Okur: Possible Playoff-bound

Lose ’Sap: Lottery-bound

by randomguy on Jun 30, 2009 3:57 PM MDT reply actions

The thing with Okur

first, he can play 2 positions. Not as tough maybe, but still able to play both. Stretch out the floor (key for a team that depends on guys cutting to the hoop) and all that. And he’s a good defensive rebounder.

second, the outside shooting is huge. More so late, when he’s ‘clutch’. I hate harping on this, but the fact is, if you need a shot late, he’s willing to take it. We have maybe one other person (Deron) we can trust with that.

One thing we need to make sure is that Miles is not starting!

Miles should not start at all. Especially if we lose Okur. We probably should have kept Almond for his offense. DWill is set at Point. then SG would be Brewer…he is set. SF is where it gets icky. Miles, Harpring, Korver, and AK…..If Harpring is healthy I say start him. He is a physical beast at SF. We will need that. Then Boozer at PF….and after looking at what Koufos did in the DLeague….he could be a sleeper to have a breakout year. He was a monster on the boards and blocked shots and scored the ball. We may not be that bad off if we lose Okur and Milsap…

by Matt_Grbac on Jun 30, 2009 4:11 PM MDT reply actions

Then a bench of

Korver,AK, Miles, Maynor, Suton….hopefully Kruger and maybe Jimmy Baron, Fesenko. could be nice..

"You can live for Nothing or die for Something, it's your call" - John Rambo

by Matt_Grbac on Jun 30, 2009 4:14 PM MDT up reply actions

I disagree

if Okur is gone, we need (more like NEED) a shooter at the wing. With Brewer starting, we don’t really have a shooter. Like I stated above, the team needs (NEEDS?) a shooter to spread the floor. The offense depends on 2 things… players cutting to the hoop for lay-ups, and physical play down low by the PF.

Both require a shooter to spread the floor and work. Okur gave us that. Now it’s on the shoulders of Korver & CJ. One of them has to start. Otherwise, teams will just crowd inside, making it near impossible for Booze (sigh) and the cutters (mainly Brewer & AK) to work well. And that’ll just freeze the Jazz offense. They’ll start settling for jumpers… and the Jazz don’t like jumpshooters, so that’s bad.

Thats why I mentioned Baron.

A 3pt specialist like Korver. Even at 6’3…we need those shooters I agree 100%. But I would rather them be Guards and SF…..Not our Center. Koof should be able to play great.

"You can live for Nothing or die for Something, it's your call" - John Rambo

by Matt_Grbac on Jun 30, 2009 4:19 PM MDT up reply actions

this is correct

Okur’s greatest value to the Jazz is the spacing he provides offensively. Since he plays more on the perimeter on offense, it keeps outside defenders honest and opens the lane for Deron to drive and Boozer/Millsap to pound. Without that spacing, the offense crumbles.

Uh, do you think you could draw me like a ninja?

by Shums on Jun 30, 2009 4:20 PM MDT up reply actions

How many championship teams have a 3pt shooting Center?

None that I can think of….they are all defenders that rebound and alter shots. Koufos and Gortat are the kind of Centers we need….not Okur.

disagree about Almond

he wasn’t generating ANY offense, especially since he likes to create with the ball in his hands and the Jerry Sloan offense doesn’t run that way for 2-guards.

The roster is going to end up:

PG: Deron, Maynor, Price/Kruger
SG: Brewer, Miles/Korver
SF: Miles/AK, Harpring, Korver
PF: Boozer, AK/Koufos
C: Koufos, Fesenko/Suton

I don’t even know if that’s a playoff team. Unless Boozer starts playing 40+ minutes a game and The Koof destroys the universe, we’re in the lottery.

You think Miles starts again?

I consider that a failed project. I would rather have AK or Harpring start.

I haven't followed him closely,

but isn’t Miles a decent outside shooter?

by randomguy on Jun 30, 2009 4:25 PM MDT up reply actions

He is a decent outside shooter.

My point is, the Jazz at least need the THREAT of an outside shooter (not just the PG) in the starting lineup for the offensive spacing to work. Without it, the lane clogs up, the defense focuses on Boozer’s offense and Deron’s dribble-penetration, and we settle for jumpers. If your starting five is Deron-Brewer-AK-Boozer-Koufos, there’s not a shooter in that bunch. You either start Miles or Korver to spread the floor, or the offense stagnates.

Uh, do you think you could draw me like a ninja?

by Shums on Jun 30, 2009 4:30 PM MDT up reply actions

Well

We have Wesley Matthews, Kevin Kruger, and Jimmy Baron on our summer league team. All real good scorers that can shoot the ball very well. I would think we could use 1 or 2 of them. They would help us out a lot by helping to spread the floor. Especially the way the Lakers tore us apart with their shooters…..Ariza and Brown were getting open looks all games. We need that.

by Matt_Grbac on Jun 30, 2009 4:33 PM MDT up reply actions

but you can't tell me any of those are starters.

The point is, there must be another starting-caliber shooter in the starting lineup for the offense to work. If it’s not Miles, then it needs to be someone else. But it’s gotta be someone.

Uh, do you think you could draw me like a ninja?

Matthews is better than Miles

Mo Nuts tore up the D-League

but it didn’t translate to the NBA. Whether that the fault of the team or the offense or Almond himself… it didn’t work. I’m all for giving him a shot, for sure. But to stick him in as the answer, and to proclaim that he’s better than CJ when he hasn’t played a single dribble in the NBA… that’s a little unrealistic.

Uh, do you think you could draw me like a ninja?

He played college ball at Marquette

More than you can say for Miles.

I don't see Price sticking

too much money that way.

I think CJ will start. AK is giong to back-up at the 3 & the 4.
The Koof/Fes/Suton… will be interesting to see.

And that wing rotation (Brewer/Miles/Korver/Harpring/AK) scares me.
Not in a good way… it’s definitely not going to scare opponents.
We need to go get another long-range shooter.

agreed again.

CJ will start, AK will get minutes at both 3 and 4. Have to think The Koof will get the bulk of the minutes at the 5.

Oh, frak. I just realized something. With Boozer opting in, both Millsap and Okur possibly leaving, guess who that means the organization will want back, because he’s reliable and knows the system… That’s right, say hello to JARRON FRAKKING COLLINS. If we lose both Sap/Okur, Sloan is going to want someone he can rely on at center, because he won’t fully trust any of the Fesoufton trio.

"We are excited that Carlos has decided to remain with the Jazz," said Utah Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor. "We are hopeful he can continue to play at an All-Star level and will have an injury-free season."

Translation: “You better not suck this year or get injured again, you back-stabbing bastard, you’ve already screwed us over financially for this season, you better at least play hard enough to give yourself some trade value or we’re authorizing Bear to give you the horse’s head in the bed treatment.”

I wonder....

If Okur would accept a new deal that is heavy on the tail end. In other words, accept less money this year but get more security and get paid more at the end of his contract…

(eg: 5 year deal
2009: 6,mil
2010-11: 10 mil
2012-14: 11 mil

Thats 48 mil over 5 years, and it helps the Jazz because they can pay him more later because lots of contracts will be coming off the books (Boozer in 2010, AK in 2012). The…what???

Memo opted in???

Ok. Scratch above prop.

by brock38 on Jun 30, 2009 5:19 PM MDT reply actions

that's too much of a jump

i think they can only increase like 15% or something so jumping from 6 to 10 mill is too much.

by P_Dizzle on Jun 30, 2009 5:21 PM MDT up reply actions

also

does memo opting in mean he’s just under contract for one more year, or is it possible that they reached an extension agreement?

by moni on Jun 30, 2009 5:23 PM MDT reply actions

No idea

could be either.
Maybe they’re moving towards an agreement, so he decided to stay? Or he just realized there’s no market for him this season.

by P_Dizzle on Jun 30, 2009 5:25 PM MDT up reply actions

Well

The cards are down and all eyes are on Miller. Did he really mean it when he said they would go over the luxury tax to retain Millsap? We will find out how far he is willing to go soon.

by brock38 on Jun 30, 2009 5:32 PM MDT reply actions

perfect

Who actually thought a week ago that the opt ins would go 3 for 3 and bat a thousand? I saw at least Okur opting out.

So I guess his agent was bluffing the entire time.

by brock38 on Jun 30, 2009 5:35 PM MDT reply actions

well...

… this is interesting. this is definitely a trend we are going to see this free agency. teams unwilling to dig into their pockets for potential players.

so can the same jazz lineup as last season (minus millsap) take us to the next level? i think someone has got to get traded or some midlevel signing.

yeah i thought it was strange that okur was even thinking about opting out. i can’t see anyone willing to pay him more than $9 mill. i can’t imagine he had that many teams knocking on his door.

by P_Dizzle on Jun 30, 2009 5:37 PM MDT reply actions

Dang!

I was kinda joking about us signing some of our summer league guys….Now it looks like that is all we can afford!!!! That is crazy!

Matthews and Kruger added to our bench…..both sign 2 year deals for a bucket of chicken and dibs on popping Boozers best looking zits.

by Matt_Grbac on Jun 30, 2009 6:43 PM MDT reply actions

that

was possibly the worst visual image ever. The Boozer zits are bad enough, but you had to add fried chicken to the equation. Ye gods.

Uh, do you think you could draw me like a ninja?

by Shums on Jun 30, 2009 6:47 PM MDT up reply actions

Well come on...

I was just thinking that Kruger could rub Boozers face with the greasy chicken and Boozer could let it sit on his face for a week so his zits can get world record sizes….then Mathews can come in and grab those big whiteheads and squeeze until they pop like a watermelon getting hit with a sledgehammer(Galagher Reference)…..

Then Sam Cassel and his Alien buddies will come by and gobble all the Boozer zit goodness up….MmmmMmmm!!

Right now

Jazz have 11 players under contract (including Maynor) and $73.5 million owed to them.

The tax limit is expected to be around $70 million (maybe as low as 68).
You are required to have 13 players under contract.

Even if (when?) we sign Suton, we’ll need 1 more player (another PG?). And need to lose at least $3.5 million on the books, maybe more.

Boozer opts in...

I’ve said he would for a while now. Now we loose Millsap. No hope there. He will get a few MLE offers… watch for him to sign with San Antonio if they can clear a little money… but they probably can’t. One thing is for sure, he will go where he can start.

Now comes all the trade scenarios involving Boozer. I thought the Bulls might go for a Boozer for Hinrich and Noah, but it is start to sound like Noah is almost untouchable from the Bulls perspective. Boozer will be traded with the right offer….. right now he our biggest trade asset, and expiring contract on a 20/10 player. If we loose this opportunity, I will become a Blazer fan… NBA league pass can make a man change loyalties.

by Frank5 on Jun 30, 2009 8:21 PM MDT reply actions

Blazers?

Ugh.
I’d have to avoid the Northwest…

I like the Nets youngsters… Harris, Lee, Lopez. If only they’d have traded Yi instead of Anderson.

Anyhow, back to topic.
The Thunder really seem to like ‘Sap. The Grizz could get involved too… and the Pistons if they miss out on Villanueva. I’m worried that he’s gonna be gone.
I miss him already.

My new favorite team is whoever gets Millsap

Actually, I’ve said before I could be a Blazers fan pretty easily. Maybe they just seem more likable because of the contrast to their jailblazers days only a few years ago. They’ve really turned around.

Boozer’s zits are worth a lot of money. I hope he plays big.

And I mentioned this earlier, but now the only way he gets a raise is by being injured MORE so that his hourly rate goes up.

I'll make it coach.

by MTN on Jun 30, 2009 10:34 PM MDT up reply actions

Millsap ...

would be one of the top few players on the team that I would have wanted to keep. All the best to the guy wherever he goes. The guy has motivation…. he once showed up in our little local gym with a trainer so he could workout during his vacation.
