The Downbeat - 17 July - The Paul Millsap Era Edition

  1. A "real" post coming on everything. But quickly, we're at a huge turning point in Jazz history. Trading and All-Star and banking on the power forward from La. Tech. That sounds familiar...
  2. Seriously, those jerseys won't last long. I mean, they only have a shelf life of probably 100 years.
  3. When Boozer's new team comes back to the ESA, what are the odds that Booze plays? Do the Jazz have a better shot at winning it all?
  4. Dwyane Wade is messing with everyone @dwadeofficial on Twitter. He announces last night, "I got GOOD NEWS coming.....stay tuned...." Then tells everyone to stop speculating. Tease.
  5. What should the Millsap/Boozer head-to-head be called at the ESA should it come to fruition?

1- Maybe. But I don’t think it’s fair to compare ‘Sap & The Mailman. The Mailman’s offensive game was light years ahead of where ’Sap’s is right now.

2- Jersies. Pssh.

3- That he plays? No idea… 40%? As for winning it all, are you talking about this year? If so… no.

4- He’ll probably just announce that he’s changing shoe companies or from t-mobile to something else or something like that.

5- Considering the whole JazzMat/Cherno-Bowl/Melta Center thing going on with the ESA (at least when it was first renamed), wouldn’t it have to be something like Nuclear Explosion or Nuclear Accident or something?

1. More like, it’s not fair to compare Boozer to Adrian Dantley. One is a Hall of Famer. The other is Carlos Boozer.

2. I say we burn the jerseys as an alternative fuel source for helping to power the ESA. That way Boozer’s suckitude can be “part of the solution.”

3. Seems like two very different and unconnected questions there. I don’t know if Boozer will play if/when his team visits. History would seem to suggest he’ll find a way to weasel out of it. Then again, maybe he’ll want to stick it to the Jazz. And then Millsap and The Koof will stick it to him.

4. Ha, did he really tell people to stop speculating AFTER he posted that tweet? Hey, Dwyane: YOU ARE THE ONE WHO IS MAKING PEOPLE SPECULATE. If you don’t want them to, then shut your cakehole. (Also, your name looks stupid.)

Actually, checking the morning’s headlines, you might be spot-on, UtesFan: Wade is switching from Converse to Nike. Why would that be “GOOD NEWS” to anyone but Nike?

5. Meh. If it’s me, I don’t give Boozer the satisfaction of treating it like a big deal. If it’s me, I want the whole crowd completely silent whenever he touches the ball. How cool would that be? “The ball is inbounded to Chalmers (HRAAAAAAH), gives it to Wade on the left wing (HRAAAAHHHHHH), in the post to Boozer… (silence)” Then again, maybe that’s showing him too much attention also. Basically, I want him ignored.

Uh, do you think you could draw me like a ninja?

Converse to Nike?

Good news for Wade too… if anyone dunks on him now, the tapes will be obliterated.

I Got Paid Today

1) I actually do see the similarities, and thought about writing something similar. But, I’m not quite old enough to remember the AD era, so I don’t really have much insight.

2) I got paid today, so I’m going to order one of those Boozer jerseys ASAP. Laugh now, but when I wear that bad boy on throwback night y’all are going to awestruck. At least until I trip on the threshold of the door, tear my hamstring and sit out for 40 weeks.

3) C’mon. Boozer isn’t going to play in ESA again. He’s going to tear his ACL/hamstring/tragus 6 weeks into the season and miss 45 games.

4) DWade and I have an agreement to no longer speculate on one another’s business dealings and personal life. I mean, really, he was all up in my business all the time, and I just couldn’t stand it anymore. Something had to be done, and if it meant a restraining order…

5) Given my answer to #3 I’m going to have guess “The Big Nonevent!”

"Millsap Era" or "Post-Boozer Era"?

1. I don’t think it’s a turning point. We look pretty much the same as last year, except there will be one less suit on the bench.
2. Send the jerseys to a third world country where they will be valued as clothing rather than as a statement.
3. When Boozer comes back, he’ll give a bland interview, get a quiet 20/10, yell “And-one!” a few times, his team will lose and he’ll give a bland interview afterwards. As for the Jazz winning it all, see my “This is your team” post for my homily on that topic.
4. Honestly, the peer pressure to tweet here is nearly unbearable…but I continue to bear it. The more I get connected to Web 2.0, the less I feel connected to My Family 1.0. You all talk about tweets as if they involve everyone….now I know how the non-Mormons in Utah feel.
5. Life off, game on.

I'll make it coach.

Oh, and I just wanted to add that...

I think if the Jazz get Haslem, it will be a very good move. I know I am in the minority on this one. But at worst, Haslem is one of the hardest workers in the NBA. He will bring a nastiness and a work ethic and toughness to the team that we have been desperately lacking. You can’t win a championship if guys like Boozer are one of your main men. Because he is satisfied if he plays well and doesn’t have that desire to win it all that you can tangibly see and fell with other players. I could see this team becoming really scrappy and hard-nosed and just gelling together with the subtraction of Boozer and the addition of a guy who just wants to get dirty and win. And even if Haslem didn’t want to play for the Jazz or live in Utah, he is an expiring contract, so he could deal with it for a year. I love the Haslem deal.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

1. Not comparable other than the coincidence of the school.

2. Send ’em to africa. Someone can add it to the 1998 NBA Champion Utah Jazz t-shirt they got.

3. He’ll play unless he signs an extension and doesn’t need to play and then he’ll fake an injury and go to three doctors until they tell him what he wants to hear.. If he plays… those boo’s won’t be booooooze.

4. YES! I’m so glad to hear that his good news was that he is joining Nike’s evil empire. Thank you soooo much for the big news DWade.

5. Thrilla in Manil… errrrrr Salt Lake City.

1, not too shabby. a lil expensive, but not too shabby.

2. donate them and get a tax deduction.

3. a) he didn’t play in cleveland the first two times the jazz played there after he signed with us…just sayin. b) let’s not underestimate the power of chemistry and a happy locker room.

1. I, for one, have my Paul Millsap glasses on and drinking the paul Millsap cool-aid at the same time. He’s undersized? He and the Mailman are both 6’9. I view last year really as Paul’s first full year. Paul will be a 20/10 double double Machine that will wear down anyone who guards him. He will develop an effective 17 foot jumper that he can knock down anytime he wants. He will be the defensive presence that Boozer couldn’t even come close to. This team is the same, but different. Last year, Millsap really didn’t know what his role was. Now he knows his role, and the Jazz better start blocking some space next to that Karl Malone Statue.

(actually, now that I think about it, Millsap could actually still start the season on the bench because the Jazz technically haven’t dealt Boozer yet. But Millsap’s time will come!)

2. Send them all to…Miami. Just cross out the “Jazz” with a Black P. Marker and Write “Heat”. Then, when Boozer bolts on them, they can just repeat the process (cross out “Heat”, put next team name. It beats having to make jerseys for all the teams he is gonna play for.

3. I say he has a 1/3rd (33%) chance of playing, since thats how much he actually plays, period.

4. I don’t keep up with DWade.

5. 24>5

1 is interesting here

How does Millsap’s play change now that he knows he’s on the court for 35 minutes a game? Will his defense be more tentative? Will he try to conserve energy? Will his body acclimate to the minutes, or wear down? What happens to his FT%? This could be very interesting. He’s such an energy player, not a steady-production-over-time player. Can he become that? Do we want him to become that? I almost think I’d rather have him play balls out for 25 minutes than pace himself for 35. Same with AK. “Reckless abandon” is what I would tell them both if I were the coach. I’d say, “You two guys are one guy with a 12-foul allotment. So don’t hesitate about anything. If one of you is on the bench, the other will be kamikaze out there, and then when he has to sit for fouls or wind, the other can go out and fly like it’s 1942.”

I'll make it coach.

Oh,

Boozer may not play against the jazz because he doesn’t want this to happen again….

Where are all the Blazers today?

I can only assume they’re trolling the LA site now to learn what they can about Odom… If I were them, I would trade their expendable cash for the draft rights to Ricky Rubio, pay him a $6mil signing bonus and let the boy buy himself out. With Roy’s ability to play the point, Rubio could take his time transitioning into that role. By the end of the year, he’d be big game solid. Of course, this fabulous idea will get no traction because the BE have cybersplit to LA for the week. Hey, we miss you guys! Let us know when you’re interested in luring Brewer out that way.

I'll make it coach.

Input from Chicago

As a Bulls fan I am fascinated by the Boozer situation.

The good - Boozer appears to be a perfect fit for the high screen and roll with Rose. We need an inside scoring presence and he seems to fit the bill.
The bad – I question whether his injuries really required him to miss that many games. I question his defense.
The ugly - He lied to Cleveland to get himself out of his contract that allowed hm to sign with Utah. There is a character issue here.

The Jazz’s conundrum is how to trade Boozer and get salary cap relief. Portland seems to want to get involved only if they can steal someone. They seem unreasonable. Memphis just took the ridiculous contract of Z Randolph. Why they gave away Pau Gasol remains a mystery. OKC doesn’t seem interested. How do you get cap relief with the above three teams out of the mix and in this economic climate where other teams are trying to shed salary? I am on the fence whether giving up Hnrich or Tyrus Thomas is worth getting Boozer.

This is a great site and I appreciate being able to post here.

Some late downbeat input.

1. I don’t think this time in the Jazz history will be a very big deal. I don’t think anyone will say again, “oh I long for the days of Boozer” like they do for Stockton and Malone. I think Boozer has some productive years and plays well, but I also think his teams never make it all the way and everyone realizes that he just isn’t the type of guy who carries you to a championship. I mean, we regret choosing Giricek over Raja Bell, but I don’t think it keeps anyone up at night.

2. Agreed about donating the jerseys to people who can use them. Or do what my brother-in-law did and update the unwanted jersey. He took off Raul Lopez’s name off his jersey and magic markered Paul Millsap on there instead.

3. He will play. And the Jazz don’t have a better chance at winning it all this next season, but long term (2-3 years), they do.

4. That is certainly not news you need to put in all caps.

5. The battle for validation, or the battle for fan approval, or something. Sell tickets on pay-per-view, UFC style.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

Clark, your Bro-in-law is brilliant

But until someone selects #5, here our your current options for that Boozer throwback you’re trying to shed:
All wore #5,

Robert Smith
Jeff Judkins
Freeman Williams
Billy Paultz
Andy Toolson
Armen Gilliam
Rusty LaRue

I’m guessing UtesFan will steer clear of Toolson and Judkins for obvious reasons.
The foregoing leaves me to wonder which is going to be more difficult to trade, the jersey or the player whose name it bears.

well played

I’m picking up my reverse throwback (current jersey, X-player) Big Dog jersey as soon as they go 75% off. And no need to splurge for the extra ink—I’ll buy two and cut and paste (read: my wife will do the sewing) the extra 5’s.
