The Downbeat - 2 July 2009 - The almost a three-day weekend edition
- The KOOF vs. Chuck Norris, who wins?
- 5 items every morning is about to get very hard, especially after summer league is done
- From ESPN: Sources: Ariza leans toward leaving Lakers. Is he going to get overpaid? Maybe not in this market.
- Ben Gordon turned down a 5 year $55M deal last year to stay with the Bulls. He's about to sign with Detroit for about the same. He made about $6.5M last year. So he missed out on about $5-6M last year by not signing. Does that make Hamilton expendable? He has 4 more years left on his deal at $12.6 per. He didn't want to come off the bench last year behind Iverson and I don't see that changing. Not a great three-point shooter, but he can hit a jumper.
- The answer to #1? It doesn't matter because Sloan wouldn't play either of them.

Rip
Any chance we could/should make a play for Rip Hamilton?

Yo, drop a beat.
1. I’m going with Little Ditka in that one.
2. It’s good to challenge your brain cells on occasion. I have faith in you BBJ. You will come up with something good.
3. Ironically, Ariza won’t make more somewhere else, but he was reportedly jilted when the Lakers didn’t offer him first. He will be overpaid, because I actually think a guy like Marvin Williams is just as good as Ariza, but his skills were magnified in LA. And I think Portland is in the fasttrack of overpaying some players also, which scares a lot of Jazz fans, but makes me smile. Even the trees in Steve Allen’s yard, doesn’t grow dollar bills.
4. I wouldn’t be opposed to trading for Rip Hamilton, per se, but there are a lot better deals to be had out there. He is overpaid, would be a long contract and doesn’t hit the three ball. And his defense was magnified by playing with Prince and the Wallaces. He is a good defender, but not lock down.
5. Well played. Well played.
The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.
I forgot to mention a couple of things.
If Ariza really is jilted by the Lakers, how smart of a move was KOC’s reaching out to Millsap very first? I say very smart.
And also, it is looking like everyone, save Turkoglu, Kidd and such, will find the well more dry than they first thought. It happened to both Boozer and Okur, and it may now happen to Paul Millsap. It is really down to Utah and OKC now, because Detroit went with Charlie V and Memphis went with Zach Randolph, once again establishing themselves as the most inept franchise in the NBA. So now OKC wants Millsap, but what do they do with Jeff Green? They still lack a center and the Thunder will be conservative at best with their offers. And there is still David Lee who needs to get paid by someone. And if a team like OKC needs a power forward and there are guys like Leon Powe, Glen Davis, Antonio Mcdyess and even Hakim Warrick to be had for $3-6 million a year, then why would they offer Millsap anything over 7 or 8 million?
My prediction: Millsap may have to stay with the Jazz. He might want to. Playing time is a big deal for him and he can either sign a long term deal and be the future PF of the Jazz or sign for one year and try again next year.
The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.
1. Impossible. Were such a battle to ever take place, the universe would cease to exist.
2. You’re right, the news is definitely going to dry up after summer league. You may have to mine info and analysis from last season — gotta be some stats you can check out, games you can re-watch. You’ll figure it out.
3. Agree with everything Clark said about Ariza. Also agree that the Jazz were very wise to get their call in to Millsap first. I think they learned their lesson from the year Raja Bell was snatched away by Phoenix — the Suns were on the phone right at the deadline, and you can’t underestimate how important that is to an athlete who wants to feel like he’s wanted.
4. I like Rip a lot, and I think he would absolutely thrive in the Jerry Sloan offense, where wing players pop off of backscreens for quick-release jumpers. But he might not be worth the price.
5. Agreed.
Uh, do you think you could draw me like a ninja?
On second thought
Chuck Norris would probably get playing time under Sloan…
Chuck Norris is the only person to have made a 56-pointer.

Boozer to Detroit for Hamilton
To the cap-savvy crowd — is this feasible? With the extra guard we’d have to do something about all our swingmen, but maybe that could facilitate some more shuffling to clear up space.
I'm thinking
Hamilton at the 2, Korver at the 3, Millsap at 4, Okur/Koufos at 5. Kililenko (3/4) and Brewer (2/3) provide good flexibility off the bench. Then there’s CJ Miles, perhaps he could go with Boozer in the trade in exchange for whatever we need. Some cash or even another player.
Personally, I'd love this
I’ve been thinking about it for a while now.

I don't like it
… but give me some time to think about it. My first reaction is (beep) NO! but let me think about it.
It works salary-wise.

To note though…
Rip signed a contract extension for 3 years that begins in 2010-11, with 2012-13 being partially guaranteed. So he’d be here for a while.

Is that an option though?
Though his contract (3 years, $9.5 this coming year) is a bit better than Rips

1- The KOOF. Especially on the basketball court or in a dance-off.
2- No worries, stuff will happen. Or you can make up trades that work for the Jazz. By the way, you didn’t get this up before I had to leave home today. Sad.
3- Overpaid? Maybe. Who knows. But if he ends up in Houston, watch out. He’s perfect for that system. Maybe the Jazz should find money/space and go after him.
4- We’d have to start Hamilton with Brewer or something. Or bring Brewer off the bench, if he’s okay with it. It’s worth noting that Brewer is a RFA after the season, so he could try to leave if he finds a system that fits him better. As for Ben Gordon, from what I’ve read, he gave up $54 million last year, and is getting $55 million this year. Is Chicago that bad?
5- Nothing to add. You nailed it.

Guys, Shums and I have you beat. We work nights. I am working 7pm to 7am for the next 3 nights.
The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.
Damn! (can I say that here?)
Yeah, normally I “sleep in” (at least until my internal clock wakes me up at like 8:30) on Thursdays. But I had the MCAT at 8 today, so that wasn’t possible.

Let me know how it goes. I took the MCAT also, but decided not to go into Medicine.
But now that I am a nurse, don’t laugh, I have an inside view into schools and medicine and such, and would love to answer any questions if you have them.
The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.
Thanks
I get to spend the next month shadowing physicians & finding profs to write recommendations for me (I’m behind, and seemingly doing it all backwards) while waiting on the results.
And then I’ll have to see after that. I have my dream school pretty much picked out. After that, it’s just “apply and hope I get in somewhere”.

All 5
1. We used to muse about a fight between Henry Rollins and Glen Danzig, and I always sided with Rollins, although that was before he became a B-lister for VH1. Nevertheless, I’d like to match them up for a tag team along with your suggestion, so…. Danzig, Rollins and The Koof all vs. Chuck Norris…
2. Aren’t you glad we called it “Downbeat” instead of “Starting 5”? You don’t have to come up with 5, just something to start the day. (You should try being a teacher – every damn day the kids show up expecting something to do for 90 minutes at a time, and they are a tough crowd.)
3. What’s the big deal with Ariza? I know he became the starter, but did he have any single game that made you think he would command attention in the free market? Isn’t this guy a journeyman role player at best? If he played on a team that wasn’t star-studded, would we even know his name?
4. I wonder what it’s like to say, “No thanks to the 5 mil, I’ll wait for next year.” Sometimes I decide to get dessert after dinner, and that’s a big deal. What is a player’s mindset? “Hmmm….should I get the Escalade or the Maz…. I’ll just get both. I’ll need a bigger garage now…better call my handler to get on that. If I get home and there isn’t another space for my two new cars, heads are going to roll. Word.”
5. Danzig, Koof, Rollins, Ditka, Norris versus Sloan… hmmmm…. Is it the offseason? Does Sloan have access to a Deere? Is there a referee in this battle royale? Is it the Western Conference Finals? I’m going to go with- black hole.
I'll make it coach.
Artest to Lakers
MVP favorites again, most likely.
And here we are, ‘happy’ with a status quo and no desire to do anything drastic.

This is a horrible decision by the Lakers. Artest doesn't make the team better.

Yeah
but they’re still favorites. And now they have another “name” for guys to love.
And it seems like they might keep Odom around as well.

Maybe they could get Raja Bell, Bruce Bowen, and Courtney Lee while they're at it.

Brilliant!
And then Lee can blow a key lay-up and cost them the series!
(I kid… kinda. I like Lee)

Hey hold on, this is good...
Don’t you think Booze looks good to Houston suddenly? No Yao, no artest, they got nuthin. What can they give us (besides “IT’s on ME!”)?
