The Downbeat - 28 July - The El Nino Edition

  1. "Boozer, I wish you would shut your big yapper!" Another day, another radio appearance by Booze. This promotional tour brought to you by Windows ME.
  2. Why haven't the Jazz been able to fleece the Grizzlies in helping to make a trade? Seems like the Jazz should be next on the list.
  3. From Boozer's interview, "We are all going through a tough time right now financially." Are you serious Boozer? He has to be saying these things on purpose, right?
  4. From Luhm's interview with Harpring: "The [knee] cartilage isn't there any more -- it just isn't." I know we won't get any salary cap relief if he retires, but maybe the Jazz would get a little relief financially from insurance? Do they get a salary cap exception?
  5. Any Jr. Jazz stories from growing up? Or from your own kid?

1. and 3. Why isn’t the Jazz FO fining him? I ask this in complete seriousness. players get fined all the time for conduct detrimental to the team.

2. david stern has not picked up his phone and told the grizz what to do. we’re the jazz, not the lickers.

I think the Jazz FO

already have some sort of plan for Boozer. I think that by now they’ve recognized that he’s totally ‘going rogue’ right now, and are busy evaluating solutions as we speak. KOC kind of HAS to say “we’re not trading him” in order to not making his market value be that much less than it already is. (If a guy says he wants out, teams tend to low-ball for that guy) Fining him would probably only serve to further destabilize the situation.

Random non-Jazz GM: “Oh, he’s being fined now . . . in the off-season? They must be some really bad blood now, we can try to get him for a scrub, an overpaid guy who sucks and a 2nd rounder maybe?”

yes, but if the jazz fail to bite on these sucky deals

the other gms will get the idea that they’re not going forward with a fire sale strategy.

1. wow, I don’t know what hurts more, Booz’ tour, or the fact that I had a computer where Windows ME was the only O/S loaded

2. Jazz decided to use their powers over the grizz not for trades, but for holding off losing to them for the longest of any team, back when they were in vancouver (Jazz were something like 23-0 vs. the Grizz at one point).

3. You just don’t get his Boozer-speak. by “we” he means “everyone else”, by “financially” he means “with money”, and by “yes, my hamstring is 100% better” he means “I’m kind of a dick”

4. Well, the Celtics did not get any relief when Reggie Miller died — same with Bobby Phills and the Hornets. I would wish for an exception, but if he retires it’s not the same thing as if he was injured. They are completely different forms and all that jazz with the NBA League Office. I’ll e-mail R.Siler later on today about this.

5. nope.

Reggie Miller?

Oh, you mean Reggie Lewis. Or Len Bias.

I’m not sure what you are asking about Harpring, but he can’t be an exception, because you have to prove at least one year in advance of the contract being fully paid, that your player can’t physically play basketball because of his/her injury. Since Harpring played in the playoffs, his one year anniversary of playing will be after his contract is already up, so the league won’t do a kick back payback, sort of deal. If Harpring had two years left on his deal, then the Jazz could get tax relief on his last year and I believe even this year. But since he played in the playoffs, the Jazz have zero chance of getting tax and insurance relief.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

1. haven’t heard it yet, what did he say? maybe he’s trying to force the jazz into trading him?

2. good question, but ever since hubie brown won the coy award memphis and utah have had an awkward relationship.

3. he sounds like a politician.

4. i don’t know, but it seems like there would be something that would help.

5. i remember “blue” edwards came to our town. we wanted him to dunk the ball but he wouldn’t. i remember thinking he was a dick after that. wasn’t he in the dunk contest? i think it was the year after that.
other than that, most my memories of jr. jazz are that the jazz would send the crap list of players to come.

Junior Jazz

I was on several Junior Jazz teams, one of which was coached by Dick Nemelka (of the old ABA Utah Stars fame). I went to elementary school with his kid, and despite my complete lack of athletic ability ended up on his team. I don’t remember how that season played out, but I’ll just say we streamrolled our way to a Junior Jazz Championship, with me as the starring point guard. And, I never ever ever dribbled the ball off my foot.

In another Junior Jazz season we had the day when a real-live Utah Jazz player would come to camp and talk to us. Usually it was the 12 or 13th guy off the bench that would come to talk, but this year John Stockton came. John. Freakin’. Stockton. We were besides ourselves. I don’t remember what he said to us, but I remember him playing 5-against-1 against the other campers. (I wasn’t selected to play again Stock because they didn’t need someone dribbling the ball their foot). Granted he was playing against 10 year-olds, but the dude was amazing. That day was definitely the highlight of my Junior Jazz career.

Man, I’m all over today’s Downbeat. Sorry.

The CBA has a provision which allows a retired player’s salary to come off the cap calculation if a league doctor determines that the player is physically unfit to continue playing. However, the team must wait one year from the injury/illness before they can apply for this relief. Since Harpring’s contract expires after this season his salary won’t be a candidate for this provision.

The Blazers successfully applied for, and received, this exception with Darius Miles’ contract. But, when the Grizz signed him last season (and he played in 10 games) the league ruled that his salary, once again, counted against the Blazer’s salary cap calculation.

If the Jazz determine that Harpring is unable to play this season, and a league doctor concurs, they can apply for a Disabled Player Exception, which allow them to go over the cap to sign a replacement player. The exception is 50% of the player’s salary (or the league average salary, which ever is less), so in the event one is granted, the Jazz would have an additional $3.25 million to find a replacement. This exception can be used to sign a free agent, or can be used in a trade, but it can only be used to sign one player, and can not be combined with any other exceptions. The Houston Rockets applied for, and received, an Disabled Player Exception this season for Yao.

If I recall correctly Hornacek played out his last few seasons with his knees being “bone on bone”. I would imagine the pain is excruciating, but he did play through it. This makes me think that even if Harpring (or a doctor) decides he’s unfit to play the league probably wouldn’t grant a Disabled Player Exception.

The aforementioned Darius Miles contract saga

was a happy time for all of us who despise Prickard’s “screw you” mentality. Karma will catch up.

This was perhaps the only time the NBA will collectively cheer Memphis’ for a FO move.

1. “It’s their call. They’re in control of that situation. They’ll handle it the best way that they can,” Boozer said. “We’ll see what happens, but I’m staying out of it, and my agent’s staying out of it, for the most part, counting on Kevin O’Connor and the Utah Jazz to take care of the situation.”

Really?? Really??? You are staying out of it? By talking to the Miami Radio stations every week about how you want to go there and how much of a man crush you have on D Wade, right after opting in witht the Jazz? Thats the problem Boozer. You Won’t stay out of it. We Jazz fans have been begging for you to stay out of it. You said you would get out of it, but you decided you wanted back in it. Now you say your staying out of it??

Moneyball & Pessimism

1- Seriously, can’t the Jazz fine his *? I mean seriously? Talk about burning bridges… I’m pretty sure he’s burnt every bridge in the US this summer.

2- Because KOC is a moron. He believes in the status quo. Well, I have something. It’s from Moneyball (great book!) and about the MLB, but I think it fits…

No matter how successful you are, change is always good. There can never be a status quo. When you have no money you can’t afford long-term solutions, only short-term ones. You have to always be upgrading. Otherwise you’re fu**ed.

That pretty much sums up my thoughts on the Jazz off-season.

3- Booze is a bigger moron than KOC. Sadly, there is also this from Moneyball…

The day you say you have to do something, you’re screwed. Because you are going to make a bad deal. …

I hate Booze, but seriously… I’m to the point where, like I mentioned before, I keep him and ignore trade offers unless offered something solid (solid youngster like Brook Lopez or something). Bring him off the bench, behind ‘Sap & AK, and let him leave after the season. If he’s gonna keep talking and make it impossible to get good value for him, I play hardball back.

4- I doubt we get any help. Just more time for Brewer/CJ/Korver and potentially AK. And while I like Maynor and don’t like the guys we’ve lost, I have to say… if we end the off-season +Maynor and -Brev Brev, Harpring & Flop, we might as well give up on the season. And, based on KOC’s previous history, we might as well be at that point. Can we skip ahead to the 2010 draft?

5- I played Jr. Jazz when I was in 3rd grade. Everyone else there was in 4th grade+. Kinda weird… A couple years later (6th grade-ish?), I met a friend for the first time in forever during a game. And I sent his first shot into the 3rd row. Seriously. We haven’t talked since… though I don’t think it’s because of that.

EC- Okafor to the Hornets for Chandler. I think they improved this off-season as well. (Okafor’s BPG… 1.7+. Booze’s BPG… 0.3… why couldn’t we trade for him, contract & all? And what are the Bobcats thinking?)
