The Downbeat - 29 July - The Twitter Will Consume You Edition

  1. Got a couple of notifications the past couple of days of some new Twitter followers. I won't out you here, but thanks for following.
  2. However improbable, and believe me it is, but for the sake of discussion, what if Boozer is still with the team come the start of the season and the Jazz go on an absolute tear. Let's say at the All-Star break, the Jazz are somewhere around 40-10. Now what do you do? Do you still trade Boozer?
  3. I'm cheating a bit here, but thought this should be separate. Now what if the Jazz somehow made it to the Finals. I won't say whether they win or they lose. How does Boozer look to fans now? Assuming of course that he's a big part of it.
  4. Worst thing you've done at a Jazz game (or NBA game if you haven't seen the Jazz)?
  5. If Stockton and Malone are captains and they're alternating picks from current or former Jazz men for a 3 on 3 tourney + 1 alternate, who are they picking? They're included in the 3.

1- Twitter for the win!

2- I don’t play Booze (as a starter at least) at all this season. And then I don’t trade him unless we’re getting someone like Brook Lopez in return.

3- The bridges have been burnt. I’ll root for the Jazz, and if Booze is involved, fine. But I’m not going to sit and root for the guy.

4-

5- Stock takes Eaton. Malone takes Deron. Stock takes Dantley. Malone takes Hornacek or Darrell Griffith.

Ah, alternates

Stock takes whichever of Hornacek/Griffith Malone doesn’t take. Malone takes AK.

Lets say…

Stockton v. Deron
Eaton v. Griffith
Dantley v. Malone
-————————-
Hornacek v. AK

I would've included Maravich

but I wasn’t sure how the whole thing would work with dead people

Are we playing with the players as they currently are then?

If so, maybe in mine Stockton doesn’t do a reverse windmill dunk, just a normal windmill dunk to finish it.

Eh

As I see it, the Jazz aren’t built to win it all this season anyways.
Unless the Lakers bigs are required to cut their legs off.

by UtesFan89 on Jul 29, 2009 6:22 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah......

1. i know which guys are following SLC dunk (and courtside), it’s not like some of us talk with those guys everyday but still don’t get a follow . . . it’s a long season though . . .

2. you kind of have to trade booz by the deadline no matter what (maybe he’s on a tear in order to just get his market value up?), because he’s not coming back and we need something for all we’ve invested in him. but if the jazz are 40-10 stability clauses will be enacted, and no trade will happen! (front office stagnancy for the win!)

3. it would look like boozer learned to play defense, or the lakers bigs somehow all became shorter than boozer overnight

4. i’m a model citizen, and never do anything bad at NBA games . . . MLB games on the other hand . . .

5. Stockton wins the coin toss, so he picks first. Going the loyalty route he takes Horny.

Karl, sensing a dearth of good guards takes Deron — who is not chopped liver.

Horny tells Stock that they need someone who can score and pass, so they pick Memo.

Karl and Deron know that they need a three point shooter, Deron wants Korver, but Karl picks Bryon Russell (because he can also defend)

Stockton then resists temptation in picking a guy like Eaton (who doesn’t have the mobility for a 3 on 3, half court tournament where everyone on the other team can make jumpers) and goes with Thurl as the alternate. (he did score 20 ppg back in the day!)

Deron tells Karl that he got to pick one of his boys, so he should get to do the same: as an Alternate Karl’s team picks C.J.

John Stockton – Deron Williams
Jeff Hornacek – Bryon Russell
Mehmet Okur – Karl Malone
Thurl Bailey – CJ Miles

Jerry Sloan – Frank Layden

Stockton’s team has crisp passes but trouble inside guarding Karl — Memo and Thurl have to keep switching out because of fouls. Russell’s shot doesn’t fall and Layden puts in Miles. Ceejay has never been more open in his life. Eventually it becomes a pick’n’pop vs. pick’n’roll. Both teams don’t have much of a shot blocking presense inside, so guard penetration takes the day.

Last play of the game:
Memo sets a screen for Stock at the top of the three point line, Karl does not switch off of Memo and Deron has to try to split the screen. He does so as Memo’s screen is softer than it should be as he is more interested in setting up behind the Three Point line for the game winner. Stockton takes two dribbles inside and Deron is backpedalling. After the 2nd dribble Stockton elevates for the game winner, but Deron is bigger and stronger than him, and it’s not a good shot to take. clank Stockton misses, but due to his dribble penetration CJ (who is on the floor because Russell is having one of his bad days, and can’t stay with Horny on defense) has shifted over to help defend. This is just the opening needed for a last second, buzzer beating, with his back to the basket, left handed game winning tip-in.

After the game Kirilenko tells his WoW guildmates that he should have picked him instead of Russell . . .

Carlos Boozer is in LA, and talks on the radio about how Magic or Kobe (whom he has gotten to know well over the summer) would have picked him for their franchise 3 on 3 game.

Pick n Pop VS. Pick n Roll

3>2. I wish someone would point that out to Jerry. “Hey, Jerry, three tractors is more than two tractors.”

I'll make it coach.

1 – I’ll admit that I recently joined twitter, but the moment it gets annoying or boring I’m out!!

2 – If Boozer helps us win that much then we keep him. He is still playing for a contract next season. If he plays amazing maybe we even try to re-sign him?

3 – All is forgiven if Boozer carries us to a title. Not likely. More likely: Boozer carries us to the lottery. Vegas should put some odds on this, playoffs 70%, lottery 29%, title 1%

4 – I don’t know about the worst thing, but my best moment was at a game against Boston a few years back (when we both sucked) and talked trash all game on some Boston fans right in front of me. By the end they wanted to fight me and dared me to come to a game at the Garden and be so vocal. It was great. I don’t hate Boston, but I definitely hate their fans.

5 – I assume Stockton picks first if they are shooting for it:

Stockton takes Deron, knowing that Malone is screwed w/o him
Malone takes Maravich to make the game exciting
Stockton takes Eaton to take away Malone’s inside game with the understanding that Eaton doesn’t even go to the offensive side of the court
Malone takes AD to generate some offense
Stockton takes Hornacek as alternate
Malone takes AK as alternate

Coaches: Tyrone Corbin and Frank Layden

Stockton, Deron, Eaton, Hornacek, Corbin vs
Malone, Maravich, AD, AK, Layden

Corbin tries to convince Layden to allow subs hockey style so Hornacek can sub in on offense and Eaton on defense. Layden agrees and does the same thing with Pistol on offense and AK on defense. After 3 hours of no points scored both teams decide next point wins and Stockton steals from Malone, passes to himself and does a reverse windmill dunk for the win.

Question 5 is great.

I like your reasoning with Stockton getting first pick

he's new, and has changed his name like 4 times over night

OK

everyone kept retweeting @GoGettem8 or something, and that doesn’t seem to be a twitter account

That's what it was last night

I tried that one at first too. He just put up a new tweet about 20 mins ago.

2. It depends on Boozer’s input into the team, and who we would get back, but I’d say it probably wouldn’t happen
3. He would look like a guy who only plays/stays healthy during contract years. I wouldn’t want him back on the team unless he was the outright reason why the Jazz won a title.
4. Never been to an NBA game, but at this year’s WVU-Louisville college gameday game I got in line at 2AM and ended up pushing ahead of people who had camped out since the previous day.
5. Malone, Deron, and Hornacek, and Russel vs. Stockton, Dantley, Memo and AK.

I’d say Stockton’s team probably wins in a close one.

Less than 100 days til the season starts...

1-Some things you should avoid no matter how much peer pressure you receive. Twitter is not one of those things.

2- I’m assuming from your scenario that 40 of the first 50 Jazz games are at home. I kid. Actually it’s kind of true and now I’m sad. And I don’t trade Boozer, but I also don’t change my tune about an offseason extension. But if that happens, it means that other players are absolutely beasting it and that Boozer isn’t the only or even main reason, just a part. He can’t carry a team by his own production. It’s literally impossible. With that said, if the right deal comes along, I still trade Boozer. But that’s true of any player at anytime. There is only one untradeable guy on the Jazz.

3- I am having a hard time imagining this scenario, but like I said above, this only happens if Okur, Koufos or Fesenko just plays out of their mind. Or maybe CJ. Boozer isn’t going to elevate his game to a point where people are saying, “this is because of Carlos Boozer.” But I would be stoked and cheer on Boozer and still yell for him to “play defense.”

4- Also a model citizen.

5- I can’t top any of the previous explanations.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

1. Nor do I smoke crack.
2. If they turn him around the way they did with AK after his trade demands, then great. But I think he’ll be more of a locker-room downer than AK if he isn’t gone before training camp. This team needs mojo, and unity will get them more mojo than a training-camp no show and all that crap. Get him out, even if it’s for less than we think we deserve. Remember, we’re trading him for Millsap-and-______. Because without trading him, we wouldn’t be able to keep Millsap.
3. If the Jazz turn Booze around and that helps us make the finals, of course all is forgiven. And if my children become well-behaved and the school gives me a $40,000 raise, and outrageous consumption of Mountain Dew begins to lead to weight LOSS and my ugly gut disappears, and if KOC stumbles upon some of my SLC posts and thinks, “damn, we could use a guy like that on our staff,”…. I don’t hold grudges, but I’m pretty sure it’s moot.
4. I once yelled at Violet The Ref, “Watch the game Violet!” and that got pretty good laughs. I was about 15 rows up. Funny though, when I sat courtside the one and only time I had that privilege, I hollered all sorts of stuff at refs and players and I don’t think they heard a thing. And it’s probably a good thing because one of them was Rasheed Wallace and he’s enormous and volatile. When I filled in as coach at the high school for a half-season, in ten games we won four (after the previous coach lost all 11, thank you very much), and I got five technical fouls, including one before the first game even started. So… I am trying to become a good citizen. I regret that I grew up with the notion that bad behavior is somehow part of the game. I repent.
5. Stockton would pick Collins, Brevin Knight, and Keefe….and start an investment company. Malone would pick Polynice, Big Dawg and Blue Edwards and re-enact old episodes of Dukes of Hazzard from the African American perspective. (Malone=Bo, Blue=Luke, Olden=Roscoe, Big Dawg=Boss Hog…. Daisy could be, hummmm…how about Dominique in short shorts….

OK… clearly I need some news. While you all get your tweeters on, I’m going to hunt down the SB Nation for the Saints and Dodgers.

I'll make it coach.
