Game Thread - Los Angeles Lakers @ Utah Jazz - Game 4

Los Angeles Lakers at Utah Jazz, May 10, 2010 8:30 PM MDT

After having faced the Lakers for the past three seasons in the playoffs in addition to the 4 games a year we see them during the regular season, there's not much more to preview.  We know, and the Jazz know, what it takes to beat them.

Lately it's been being able to finish down the stretch.  You simply can't go for 3 minutes scoring drought late in the fourth and expect to win.  I've talked about having to be near-perfect for the Jazz to win.  Let's amend that to being perfect in the fourth quarter.

The Jazz have played themselves into position to win each game of this series.  Will they finally put it together late and pull out  the first win of the series?

Let's hope.

clarification

i’m so sick of reading these articles that have been popping up at every major sports media outlet over the past few days, about how wonderful it is that derek fisher is getting back at the hypocritical, mean-spirited jazz fans:

http://articles.latimes.com/2010/may/08/sports/la-sp-plaschke-lakers-20100509
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=mc-fisherlakers050910

my understanding is that fisher’s daughter’s doctor was in new york. i have no problem with him going to seek what he deems to be the best medical care for his doctor with his employers permission. i assumed he would go to ny or nj to be close to his daughter’s doctor. then, he popped up with the lakers suddenly… which by my count, play their home games about 700 miles farther away from new york than the jazz.

so what’s the real story? were fisher’s docs always in ny, justifying my/our anger over his sneaky ploy to get out of town? did fisher switch to a doc in la before being released from his contract? somebody please clear this up so i know whether my annoyance at fisher is justified.

Fisher's daughter went to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in West LA...

…for her monthly checkups. Her oncologist there was/is the partner of her NY oncologist. Also, Fisher’s wife’s family is from LA, so another reason is the existence of that support system, which is very important for cancer sufferers and their families. Neither the Knicks, Nets, or Clippers showed any interest in Fisher, so he took an $8 million pay cut from his Jazz contract and went to a worse team at the time in order to play for the Lakers again. Nobody foresaw Bynum’s development into a better option at center than Kwame Brown, but when he got good, Kobe shut up with the trade demands.

Motivation...

Will each Jazz player have a different motivation coming into tonight’s game? Will some be thinking about summer? Will some be out there for fun? Will others be thinking it’s their last game in a Jazz uniform? Will some be upset at being down 3?

What will the different thoughts do to teamwork?

Siler didn’t write the “All hope is lost” headline. Reporters suggest headlines, but it is up to page designers/copy editors to write the actual headline into the space allotted by the page design. Sometimes it causes miscommunications when a copy editor has to cram the gist of a story into a punchy hed in a small amount of space. I’ve been on both sides of that, both as a reporter and an editor.

by Basketball John on May 10, 2010 9:16 PM MDT up reply actions

by being a copy editor/paginator who doesn't like or care about sports and doesn't understand the ramifications of such a headline.

It’s funny — headline writers are extremely cognizant of the risks involved in covering crime; it’s vitally important not to “convict in the hed,” meaning, you can’t imply the suspect is guilty just because he’s been arrested. (It’s the difference between saying “Man arrested in rape case” and “Man arrested for raping woman” — the latter pronounces the man guilty before any sort of due process.)

Yet when faced with a somewhat similar circumstance in sports (essentially convicting the team for giving up hope when they have not done so), the ball gets dropped.

Such is life in the newsroom.

No but seriously, I didn't even expect this type of effort before the game. They have quit. Even if they come back in this game, they have quit for some of it.

Which is unacceptable. I was understanding that this team might not have improved against the Lakers the last 3 years, but they are also as mentally weak as the previous teams.

i think they grew up somewhat in the regular sesaon

but when it’s crunch time—when it counts in the playoffs, yes, they have reverted to mental weakness.

by moni on May 10, 2010 9:25 PM MDT up reply actions

Disagree slightly.

They’re not QUITE as mentally weak as previous teams. They played harder in LA than they had before. The talent level is closer.

Then again, maybe that’s just a result of LA not being as good as they have been.

Regardless, the end product is the same.

who thinks the Jazz should trade up for Derrick Favors?

by Frank5 on May 10, 2010 9:32 PM MDT reply actions

They could probably find a way to trade up to the 3 or 4.

The one or two, probably impossible. Thus Favors is a good goal in my opinion. Remember we picked up one extra 1st rounder (next year) via Brewer.

by Frank5 on May 10, 2010 9:35 PM MDT up reply actions

We could trade our 2nd and our lower 1st for No. 3 or 4.

Whatever it would take to get that big man. We don’t really NEED much else out of that draft.

ridiculous

he DID lie! Utah has a great hospital for regular treatments and checkups. Also, a man that makes millions of dollars can easily have his family in two places at once. Players and coaches do that all the time. is wife and daughter could have moved anywhere in the country for great care. A cntract is a contract and he should have been loyal to that.

It might be politically incorrect in Utah

but his contractual obligation to Utah Jazz was more important than his family difficulty. Many other players have wanted/needed to leave contracts for various reasons but HOW MANY ARE LET JUST WALK AWAY. I remember the reports clear as day, Fisher almost made it sound as if he was retiring. And how many days later was it that he decided to join the best team in the league? Jazz were classy in their decision. Fisher was not. Only was to settle this would be to get in the head of LHM which we obviously cant do. But sleep tight being just another empathetic guy who will finish being those who are cutthroat in every aspect of your life!

by Howi on May 10, 2010 9:48 PM MDT up reply actions

Respectfully, I couldn't disagree more.

How much do sports actually matter when your daughter has cancer? What else in the world matters? In that situation it doesn’t matter where capable doctors are or aren’t if you know you have someone in mind who you trust to provide the most excellent care available. Who really cares if you blatantly violate your contract and lie to an entire city. Honestly, if those LA doctors are the ones he really wanted his daughter to have, and he felt like it would be easier to be with her if he left the Jazz, there’s nothing on earth that he’s obligated to higher.

Point made

His family IS important. He should have been honest with Utah about his desires in that case. He could have been traded to a big city (even a firesale would have been likely) BUT he didnt. He lied about his intentions to put his family first. He didnt. He knew that LHM and Utah’s beliefs in the family were his way to appeal to their soft spot. Smart move. Not classy.

by Howi on May 10, 2010 10:01 PM MDT up reply actions

If he lied, yep. He’s a bastard and he’s hated as a sports figure for a good reason.
If he didn’t lie, nope. He had his priorities right and it just looked really suspicious.
Either way, he’s a good man. I believe he’d trade being the biggest bastard in the world for her.

2. I hate the Lakers
3. Derek Fisher might have had some classy moments, BUT he did leave the Jazz with an alterior motive. Sorry for his daughter, but he used that as a great excuse. Screw TNT for calling Utah ignorant for booing him. D Fisher is a piece of shit

I had to mute the TV during Reggie Miller’s half hour sermon about what a great guy Derek Fisher is and how ignorant Jazz fans are for booing him, because even though I do boo him, it has nothing to do with him leaving us. What I wrote about Fisher in 2008:

When the news first broke that the Jazz were letting Fisher out of his contract, the local papers reported it as if he was possibly going to retire (although he said he had no plans to do so), or at least take some time away from basketball, to care for his daughter. “Life for me outweighs the game of basketball,” he said at the time.

We Jazz fans knew he had made a lot of sacrifices for our team, and he had left us with that absolutely spine-tingling moment against Golden State (I’ll never forget it). He had provided veteran leadership for a team that needed it. He served as a mentor to young Deron Williams, without taking umbrage at D-Will’s superior talent.

We loved Fisher, we wished him well, we would miss him. All was right with the world.

For about two weeks.

Then we heard Fisher was going to sign with the Lakers, and we were stunned. All that talk about taking time away was apparently just talk, then? What happened to the doctors in New York, who had seemed to be so significant during the playoffs? Why the Lakers, of all teams? Why?

Then the pieces started coming together. We remembered that Fisher had been devastated upon leaving Golden State, and seemed disappointed about coming to Utah. Remembered that he had shot poorly in a lot of games. Realized that his stats had gone down, across the board, from his previous year in Golden State (and surprise, surprise, they’re back up this year). Things started seeming, well, Fishy.

Then our built-in Jazz fan inferiority complexes took over. When you live in one of the most mocked states in the Union, and you’re a fan of one of the most disliked teams in the league, you tend to get a little defensive. We started imagining things about Fisher’s demeanor, in-game and out. We figured he must have hated it here, since everyone always does. We assumed he couldn’t wait to get out of what he perceived as the armpit of America. The fact that he signed with the Lakers, rather than Boston or New York or New Jersey, all of whom could have used him, sealed the deal in our minds: Fisher hated us, hated the team, hated Jerry Sloan, hated Utah, and was desperate for a way out. His daughter’s disease provided one, and he took it.

Is that the way it really went down? Maybe not. I’ve interviewed Derek Fisher, and found him to be perfectly amiable, full of professionalism, class, and sportsmanship. Personally, I wish him and his daughter the best.

But I can certainly understand why some Jazz fans don’t.

Uh, do you think you could draw me like a ninja?

Was it sort of a low blow for him to sign with the Lakers? Yes. Do we need to hold it against him for it? No.

And she hates Favre that his name is considered a swear word. She cried when he made that amazing throw at the end of the game for the Vikings in Week 3 or whatever it was. And this is a girl who knows very little about football and is one of the more sweet good hearted girls i know.

My point: loyalty goes a long way. Some sports stars put themselves in situations where they really transcend the team game as individuals, especially the ones who create amazing moments in your life such as Favre winning Super Bowls and Fisher’s amazing playoff moment for the Jazz. This is why i dislike D Fisher. I feel like he found a way to get out of what he considered a bad situation (once again a back PG). On top of that, he joined the Jazz fans’ most hated team and seeming ups his game against us. Sounds like Favre to me. My wife was SOO mad when he got some cheers in Green Bay. She thinks he should never show his face, I know she would yell at him if she say him!

by Howi on May 10, 2010 9:56 PM MDT reply actions

I don't like Fisher either.

I think that the result of what happened Really screwed us. As clarkpojo says, it was a massive lowblow what transpired.
Yeah, I’m mad as hell he left and ended up back with the Lakers, especially if it was planned that way.
But basketball becomes really very small when I think about the fact that he got her the help she needed to continue to live.

by jake1ar on May 10, 2010 10:07 PM MDT reply actions

Jake,

Holding a grudge against another person is pointless. Half the people you hold a grudge against don’t even know it. And the other half don’t care.

I think Bea Arthur said that on an episode of Golden Girls.

by Dyl on May 10, 2010 10:40 PM MDT up reply actions

of course you would.

It’s the manner in which it happened. In speaking to local papers, Fisher said he was “taking time away” because “life outweighs the game of basketball.” No one can fault him for that. But the implication there was that he wasn’t going to sign two weeks later with a conference rival.

In fact, even IF he was going to sign with the Lakers, if he had been above-board about it, if he had said, “It is my intention to leave this contract and go to LA, where my family is and where my daughter can get the best care,” even THAT we all would have been okay with.

But he didn’t do that. And because he didn’t, it hurt a lot more.

No one begrudges him for taking care of his family. They begrudge him for implying one thing and doing another, seemingly taking advantage of an unprecedented act of kindness on the part of Larry Miller for nullifying his contract.

… Also, he plays out of his mother-frakking mind against us and sucks against everyone else.

Last year Kosta Koufos was considered a better prospect

But Fess had a stretch this year where he got some time, and really played well, while THE KOOF struggled. So he took up the mantle of “promising 7 footer who OH GOD CAN HE PLEASE GET GOOD ENOUGH TO DEFEND THE LAKERS”.

He is the best we can get right now to do what we badly need to turn the page on this disgusting failure to beat you guys. Hopefully we will have better in the future, but we celebrate what we can get out of him. He is a pretty big body and fun to root for.

I try to walk the middle way

but I’m seriously sick of him. All his little annoying crap. The flat-footed defense, the weak-sauce shot attempts, the long jumpers, the missed free throws, the constant yelling, the pushes in the back instead of jumping for the rebound… all of it.

It’s like a failing relationship — after a while, all the niggling little things just start piling up until they’re all you can see, and you just want to be alone just to get some relief.

My offseason feeling as far as other moves.

Draft a shot blocking, rebounding center. My favorite is Solomon Alabi.

And use the MLE on another three point shooter. This team could be good offensively with one more three point shooter.

Deron can get anyone an open look. Just need some more guys that will hit open threes and Millsap and AK working downlow.

I like the idea, I love the 3 attack with Deron, I’m just concerned that a point guard penetrating to get 3-shooters looks as an offensive plan is more like a D’Antoni offense than a Sloan one.

Would you want somebody like Glen Rice who sits around and snipes

Or someone like Jason Richardson who was more of a straight scorer who could hit the three

Defender and shooter. looking to see if there are any free agents who fill this role.

Or else a S & T of Boozer for JJ Redick and Marcin Gortat would also work.

I'd make that trade.

Magic would be scary with a Boozer/Dwight frontcourt. They’d totally complement each other’s weaknesses.

I would too

but I bet it would hard to pry Gortat out of the Magic’s hands. We could try Boozer for Lewis.

Like, we could easily have at any given point in time, two 3-shooters supporting Deron already.

I might be off on my 3 pointer theory. Jazz always seem to shoot about 37 % from the 3 point line no matter how many they take.

Orlando takes twice as many 3 pointers as we do though. It’s crazy.

From a lakers fan

im here out of respect for your team and your fan base. Unlike staples, Utah’s arena is loud and alive. This was definitley not a traditional 4 game sweep. Close games throughout with exception of this last one. I just think the absence of Okur and a healthy AK was too much to overcome. It’s too much to ask of fesenko to guard Gasol or Bynum. I wish you guys all the luck in the future, and i def think that you will be better without Boozer. Deron Williams is the best pg in the league, so keep your heads up, draft or trade ofr some good players and maybe we can meet next year in the playoffs again.

Kobe: "I'll do whatever it takes to win games, whether it's sitting on a bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate, or hitting the game-winning shot."

by hrghori on May 11, 2010 1:24 AM MDT reply actions

for the sake of my sanity and my immortal soul

please let us NOT meet in the playoffs again.

Thanks though. Good luck to ya. And by “good luck” I mean “may the Suns destroy your team so badly that you lose the will to live.” :)
