A lot of stats comparing Al Harrington, Al Jefferson and Carlos Boozer

I was just quietly minding my own business tonight. Looking up info to break down the SF and PF position and dividing the minutes there between Andrei Kirilenko, Paul Millsap, C.J. Miles, Gordon Hayward, Jeremy Evans and maybe even Mehmet Okur too. You see, we could do anything there now that Carlos Boozer was gone. And I for sure felt like Al Harrington would be a bad match. Well, Al Jefferson (and more accurately, Greg Miller) decided to ruin my party. So here are stats. They show Career Regular Season; Career Playoffs; Combined stats for the last two regular seasons (2008-2009 and 2009-2010); and their most recent playoff performance. (I am not including any analysis here, just the stats. I still don't know what's up and I'm not going to jump the gun and trash a guy who may or may not be actually come to our team)

This was initially supposed to be looking at Harrington vs. Millsap / Kirilenko, but well, FORGET ABOUT THAT NOW!

jefferson gives you blocks, which is nice

but he’s not nearly as good at scoring as boozer (and really, boozer does score well, he’s no malone — but as we saw previously, millsap in the playoffs was better than boozer was)

I think he'll benefit from the sloan bump.

Also, who was going to run the pick and roll with Deron? Millsap gets his points but it’s through hustle and creativity. This will at least be interesting to watch.

Looks like a guy you could use.

Especially with Okur out for a little while. But does taking Jefferson with your trade exception mean that Matthews does not get matched? Absorbing Jefferson’s contract puts you guys in the Luxury Tax as it is. Just curious to see what you guys thought about that.

"[S]ince men enjoyed very great leisure, they used it to pursue many kinds of commodities unknown to their fathers, and that was that first yoke they placed upon themselves without thinking about it, and the first source of evils the prepared for their descendants. For, besides continuing thus to soften body and mind, as these commodities had lost almost all their pleasantness through habit, and as they had at the same time degenerated into true needs, being deprived of them became much more cruel than possessing them was sweet; and people were unhappy to lose them without being happy to have them." -Jean-Jacques Rousseau

He's one of the only decent SG's left

It’s either resign Matthews

Or look at guys like Roger Mason and Shannon Brown at SG. Al harrington is likely to sign with Toronto now.

I guess we could move Miles to SG and try to sign a SF but there aren’t many of those left either.

I’m kinda hoping we try get Matt Barnes to come off the bench. I want his nastiness off the bench.

Nah, it would be your trade exception from Boozer.

Now, under the CBA, I believe that you can’t package the trade exception with anything. So it would be a straight absorbtion of Jefferson’s contract. You would still have the MLE, but I don’t know how your ownership feels about the Luxury Tax. That’s probably the deciding factor right there.

That's why I think

We’ll eb at the Lux tax with Jefferson and still need to sign 4 players. I’m guessing we get a cheap SG with the MLE and a back up SF or SG with the biannual or the rest of the MLE. Resign Fes and take someone from the summer league

you're right, but that's not the issue.

What Darkstar is saying is that the Jefferson deal will already put us over the tax. Matching on Matthews is still possible with the MLE, but that will ALSO add to our total roster salary, pushing us FURTHER into the tax. So the question is, are the Jazz willing to pay that dollar-for-dollar penalty by matching. My guess is no.

I should have been more specific

Why would the Jazz Front Office think they’re not a contender? Why would they add a guy who ruins all cap flexibility for the future, who will put the team into luxury tax territory by himself …

Why would they do this if they didn’t see this as a championship contending move?

I certainly am not ridiculously high on it, but the Jazz front office must be or they wouldn’t be doing it.

And if they think they are a championship contender, why go cheap after adding this guy? Why not add the best SG available, regardless of cost (and his price isn’t THAT much, despite all the moaning and whining)?

for the reason Ross just put on his Twitter.

If the AJ deal goes through, we will have almost $50M committed to D-Will, Jefferson, Okur, and Millsap in 2011-12. With Matthews that becomes $56M. So we’d have $2M, the MLE and the biannual to get EIGHT more players.

Jefferson shots are worth way less than average (being 1.22 average), and got a lot of scoring done — off of shooting a lot. one shot every 2 minutes.

his stats are going to be humblingly low next year if he’s on the jazz, unless there’s a BIG boost that we all imagine there automatically is when playing for the jazz / sloan. (how true is this though? do we know?)

So

are we looking at this starting lineup?

Pg: Williams
Sg: Miles
Sf: AK
Pf: Milsap
C: Jefferson

Cause that gives us a height advantage in the backcourt but a very small front court.

What depth do we have at SG?

We have Hayward and nobody else to back up CJ at the 2-spot.

I haven’t been following the comment threads closely – has anybody brought up Matt Barnes? It looks like he is not going to return to Orlando now that Q-Rich signed with them. He plays good defense and can hit the occasional 3-ptr. A little too gratuitous with the tattoos, but he is a scrappy and TOUGH player. If we lose OMSW, do we go after Barnes, a more experienced veteran?

yea but money is drying up fast

he’s looking for a multi-year deal as opposed to salary – that’s why he opted out of his last year with Orlando. He certainly can shoot it plenty to be a SG, and he has the size to defend players like Kobe, Melo, etc…

We really need a good defender at the 2. This next week is going to be very stressful.

very possible

just depends on how far we are willing to go into the luxury tax. The Jefferson deal will put us there already. But we can still use part or all of the MLE and the biannual exception to sign whomever is still out there. The downside is that every dollar we spend over the tax means a two dollar penalty to the league. The Jazz FO will surely want to minimize the amount of that penalty.

eyeing Jefferson's split stats against the Lakers (ESPN)

over the last couple of years vs. Boozers . . . it seems Jefferson might very well be a plus for us there.

i'm so stoked for this deal

during the past few years, jefferson seemed like a player who was just waiting to explode if he had some decent talent around him. all those stats above make him seem crappy because he came in to the league so young and struggled early on. i think he’ll outperform boozer’s jazz stats on the offensive end, and actually provide some legit defensive presence. Is there a better hope in the West to slow down the Lakers’ frontcourt than Jefferson/Millsap/Okur/AK if all are healthy next spring?

Okay, I'm calming down a bit

I was only able to glance at the idea while at grad school tonight.

Al will be the center. There really aren’t THAT many big dominant centers in the league. Lakers will still be a big problem, but still against them a frontline of Al, Millsap, and AK > Boozer, Millsap, AK. > as in bigger and > as in more effective on both ends.

He’s not great defensively. But again, Al, Millsap, and AK > Boozer, Millsap, AK > Boozer, Memo, AK.

The trade doesn’t thrill me, but it could work out

IF

1. Al doesn’t try to be a 20-10 guy. The Jazz will be better with points and touches distributed equally between Al, Millsap and AK

2. Al works on his defense. He’s not great defensively, but it’s also worth remembering he has NEVER had a decent coach or a decent team.

And most importantly

IF

3. This is a sign the Jazz are ready to go for broke, gung-ho into luxury tax territory for 1 more year to put the absolutely best team on the floor—and that means resigning Wesley too.

Otherwise this will backfire. The backcourt will either suddenly be really thin or will be plugged in with a bunch of randoms so we can enjoy watching Corey Brewer score 58 in another inexplicable T-Wolves win.

by jazzed on Jul 12, 2010 11:04 PM MDT up reply actions

Here's my hope

The Jazz traded Maynor only after the team gunked things up for 2 months and looked like the 9th best team in the West. When that happened the team traded Maynor to save $16 million.

The Jazz only traded Ronnie B. when Matthews turned out to be a lot better. Ronnie B. was having a pretty lousy year to that point.

I’m hoping (probably without any reason, I know), but I’m hoping the FO recognizes that Matthews is actually really, really good and that spending the money on him could very well add 5-8 wins.

Plus Matthews won’t cost the Jazz nearly as much as they cut from trading Maynor/Harpring/Brewer.

I’m hoping.

Locke's analysis is fine

He usually just tries to understand why the Jazz management would be making the pick even if he disagrees with it.

He respects the FO and knows that they don’t just make ridiculous decisions on a whim or anything. I think his analysis is usually pretty accurate, and includes scouts, other GM’s and players in his sources.

I remember him saying that Jefferson would basically be like having Boozer several weeks ago. that was his opinion without really looking in to the situation. I also remember him saying that Jefferson was a poor post defender

by davidthecomposer on Jul 12, 2010 11:42 PM MDT up reply actions

So.

We’re looking at:

PG: Deron, Price, Gaines
SG: CJ, Hayward, ?
SF: AK, Evans
PF: Jefferson, Millsap
C: Okur, Fes?, Koof

And then we sign one more swingman for depth? Is this where we’re at? Do we go for someone like Barnes in this case? Because that roster right there is at about $74M. We would still have the MLE, the biannual and the Harpring exception, but every dollar after this is two more dollars to the league.

Canis Hoopus on Jefferson

http://www.canishoopus.com/2010/7/12/1566769/trading-big-al-how-i-learned-to

He is a wonderful low post scoring threat and that’s about it. He’s not worth his large contract and that high dollar amount makes him a very prohibitive trade prospect when fishing for young wing talent
If the basic framework of the deal is the TPE for Al, that leaves the Jazz over the cap, making it even more unlikely that they will match the Portland Trail Blazer offer for Wes Matthews. This could be interesting in that it opens up the possibility of Corey Brewer being added to the mix. How about Al + Brewer for the TPE and a young player like Kosta Koufos? The Jazz need a big and a wing and the Wolves could offer help on both fronts. Also, Portland…you’re welcome.

This is the bomb deal. Jefferson plays strong, he’s an absolute beast. not sure on the pick and roll deal but he’s the real deal. He just made the Jazz a very tough team. No more soft Boozer. Bring back Ronnie Brewer and the Jazz have a very very tough hustling team. I will call it, they will vault into one of the top 3 teams out of the West. Don’t undermine the fantasy basketball wiz now. Jefferson is one of THE most under-rated big men in the NBA. He’s probably has the most post moves as a big man and has such fluidity/grace in his moves. Defensively? One category he’s superior than Boozer…he block shots. That’s a basic for a big man, Boozer couldn’t even do that. Jazz got rid of the cancerous Boozer and now that the curse has been lifted (even as a fan i felt dirty for that move), I’m hoping for good things to come. Now Jefferson couldn’t do his thing the last couple of years because Minnesota was trying to run the triangle offense. Now that he’s more into a position where he can play in a system that favors his position (Karl Malone, Carlos Boozer), he could rise and become a dominant power forward in the league. Either way, I’m a pessimist/realist and I know a good deal when I see one. This is one of them.

Well, you're more excited than me

But then I do stink at fantasy bball. But I rock at everyone against everyone Bomberman. That counts for something, right?

Of course it counts

We’ll all have to wait and see and I’ll just keep all the Kool Aid at bay. I just love the move. I’m all for hustle and passion, honest hard working players. That’s all I want as a fan and I think the Jazz are moving in the right direction with this move.

I also finally figured out the metaphor

The horizon is the ground. It’s just way off in the distance. So looks like it’s up high and then you walk and walk and walk and then you finally get to it you realize …

Hey. I’m still on the freaking ground. Just in a different spot.

(I don’t mean to be mean. I’m just an English teacher and would-be poet. Gooked up metaphors amuse me to no end.)

And with that a new outlook on the game of basketball.

It’s all good, love the metaphor and correction there. No offense taken.

A bit from Blazers Edge...
Al Jefferson and Jerry Sloan
Man, there’s a sit com. Unless AJ starts playing some D, I predict Sloan chokes him to death by January.

Just watch Sloan get him to play defense
And suddenly he’s one of the best PFs in the game.

That’s what scares me
Sloan has always known how to get the best from players.

The rest of the league

Has to recognize Sloan.

He’s been kicking the majority of their butts consistantly for 2 decades.

The Jazz have historically been fantastic at getting the most from its players.

Not sure who should get the credit for this but I’m sure Sloan deserves his fair share. To me, picking up Al Jefferson seems like a lateral move at best versus Boozer, BUT if the Jazz FO (Sloan included) think he’s worth what they’re giving him…It makes me (Blazer fan) very nervous!

Very good comment

It’s the system I think. Some players thrive better in certain systems of play from each team. The Jazz have been perennially a PF focused system. So if AJ has above average skill there, he’ll thrive here….

Found this Out Late

Now I am coming to this late but I just read all the comments and I am actually very excited. Let Wesley work it out with Portland, sign Ronnie, get Corey as well and we would be a tough team. Are we better then the lakers probably not but can we win more then one game then how we did this year…Absolutely. The Jefferson trade also lets Okur not stress about getting back too quick. I woke my Dad up for this so this better go down.

I figured out why the Jazz made this trade!!!!! It all makes sense!!!!!!!

KOC decided this was the best way to play .500 ball against the T-Wolves.

1 more win, baby. 1 more win.

I guess I don't see the point

It’s like bragging about BYU beating a third ranked Oklahoma in a year where they fail to get into a BCS bowl

SG

now the Jazz need to focus on a SG. Whether it is a starter or someone to play the 2 off the bench.
I have a strong feeling KOC is going to try to mend the bridge he burned with Deron after trading Brewer. I think Brewer comes back, and if so I hope CJ starts because we will be seriously lacking 3 point shooters if Brewer is signed.
To stretch the defense and give us that 3 point threat, (which is why we won so many games as soon as we traded for Korver) we would be better suited picking up Mason or Brown to start at SG with CJ at SF to open the floor for Sap and Jefferson

by zdid on Jul 13, 2010 9:00 AM MDT reply actions

Millsap

Sap probably deserves to start, but a team has to do what it takes to win. I’m questioning whether his desire to be a starter in the league and playing PF are compatible. If you ranked the guys based on height how many are taller? Let’s see: Fes, KK, Memo, Al, AK, Hayward, Evans—it wouldn’t surprise me if Sap is less than the team’s average height. And someone like that is supposed to be our long-term PF?

How has he played in the past at SF? I thought I remember a few times when the team played big, but don’t know if it was enough to get any meaningful idea. If he works on his agility as opposed to strength going forward, could he have a better career at SF? Even if we didn’t add anyone else other than a one or two placeholders and don’t match OMSW, what if the starters were:

C – Memo
PF-Jefferson
SF-Milsap
SG-Miles
PG-Deron

With backups:

C – Fes, Koof
PF-AK
SF-Evans
SG-Hayward
PG-Price, Gaines

As has been mentioned before, adding someone like Matt Barnes could really shore up the SF/SG position while the rookies develop.

Milsap

Isn’t quick enough to play SF. Just not possible. He gets burned by quicker permiter players. LIke Odom.

In my opinion Millsap has to start. He’s been waiting patiently for 3 years. It’s time and if we don’t start Millsap, his moral and productivity will be in jepordy. Shift Jefferson to the C slot and I believe those two will be a great 1-2 punch.
