The Downbeat - 17 August 2010 - #295 - The Summer Is Getting Longer Edition

Ric Bucher from ESPN is reporting that a trade for Carmelo Anthony will happen,

All signs continue to point toward the eventual divorce between Carmelo Anthony and the Denver Nuggets.  League sources say it is now a matter of when, not if, Anthony and the Nuggets will go their separate ways.

Would this put them in a re-building mode?  They brought on Billups a couple of seasons ago to help put them over the top and it nearly got them to the finals.  Last year of course the Jazz ousted them in 6 games.  They're filled with vets and not a lot of promising youth.

Who would they be able to get for Melo?  He's been linked to wanting to go to New York but they don't appear to have any tradeable assets right now outside of picks.  I would love to have one less team in the division to worry about but I'm not getting my hopes up that he gets moved anytime soon.

Great commercial from Malone, dialing it back to the early 90s

#1, #2 and #5

#1: Either way, even if Melo stays, the Nuggets chemistry will be even worse than it already is. I think either way, it works out for the Jazz.

#2: What ever happened to $2.99 combo meals. And Hardees for that matter. I used to always go there. Then they all got replaced by Burger King.

#5: I don’t care what the jerseys look like. I would be fine going back to the Black Mountain jerseys that we had that 18 game winning streak with 10 years ago. I remember when we just kept wearing them so long as we were winning. Whatever works. I think they look cool though.

I don't pour beer on Max Hall's family often, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.

1) There is no way that any Melo controversy doesn’t help the Jazz. We have already seen how fragile that franchise is and this is sure to just fan the flames. I could be wrong, but I dont see him being traded in the next two months, but just the fact that he is going to be the only conversation surrounding the nuggets is good thing.

2) How do you find this stuff? I remember when my dad would take us to get sweet rolls from Hardees because we were late for school/work. So good. Anyone remember the California Raisins?

8 & 5) I wish I could have been there. The new jerseys are great in my opinion. The green numbering is going to take some getting used to, but they look better on the players than simply on the screen. The best part of the whole thing is listening to Big Al. He really seems like he is surprised with how good Jazz fans are. Its like he thinks he has been given a second chance at life. I love it.

1) 'Melo is a baby. Always hated him, always will. Whatever happened to loyalty to the team that drafts you?

2) I, like Jim, also miss $2.99 combo meals and Hardees. But Carl’s Jr is good too!
8) I wish I could have gone to the fanfest, but I had to work. I would have probably been suckered into buying a jersey there. I think I can wait a year or two and get them cheaper or find one on ebay so good thing i didnt go.
4) For some reason I cant get the link to come up. Oh well.
5) I voted for “hate the home jersey, love the road one” but i dont really hate the home one, I just love the road one so much more!

Exactly!

Well…not exactly. Wes didnt get drafted by the Jazz but I still think he should have been loyal. And ’Melo is using his star power to decide when he is traded and to whom (whom?). Wes was a free agent and the Jazz decided not to match his offer.

Denver is in trouble.

1- The only two teams that have taken a similar problem and made them okay were the Lakers with Kobe and the Jazz with Boozer last year. But the Nuggets don’t have the money or the assets to make a Pau Gasol type trade and they don’t have the front office stability to handle the situation like the Jazz did. George Karl still might not be the head coach and they just got rid of their GM. Denver is in trouble.

2- Hardees is owned by the same company who owns Carl’s Jr. We have Hardee’s here in North Carolina, even though it is the same menu that you would find at Carl’s Jr. Can’t find any LA Gear stuff, however.

8- There are some great videos available of the fan fest. Looks like fun. I like the jerseys fine, especially the home ones. Just glad we won’t ever have to wear the alternate baby blues.

4- CJ did look the most comfortable on the runway. But he has a funny walk.

5- I like them both. Just can’t wait to see us play in them now.

Let’s remember that the asset needed for the Pau Gasol trade was Kwame Brown.

by El Aguacil on Aug 17, 2010 12:36 PM MDT up reply actions

But even if the Nuggets picked up, say... Dirk Nowitki.

They wouldn’t probably have the money to surround Carmelo and Dirk with above average players. Gasol’s $20 million a year along with Kobe’s wages, pushes LA into the most expensive realms of salary when they have to get other good guys like Lamar Odom and Ron Artest. Denver wouldn’t be able to do such a thing.

LA literally puts together the best team they can by throwing cash at people.

That argument is bogus.

Over half of last years yankee team came from their farm system. There are teams with smaller payrolls that don’t even field that man home grown players.

For the playoffs:

Starters:
Posada, Jeter, Cano, Gardner/Cabrera (platooned Center), Tex, A-rod, Swisher, Damon, Matsui (DH)

Farm system: Posada, Jeter, Cano, Gardner/Cabrera

Total: 5/9

Starting Pitchers:
Sabathia, Burnett, Pettite, Hughes, Chamberlin

Farm System:
Pettite, Hughes, Chamberlin

Totaly: 3/5 (We only used a 4 person rotation but those were the 5 main starters)

Relievers:
Aceves, Albaladejo, Bruney, Coke, Gaudin, Mitre, Robertson, Rivera,

Farm System:
Aceves, Bruney, Coke, Mitre, Robertson, Rivera

Total: 6/8

So 14 out of 22 players came up through the farm system. Those were just the main players. If you go into the whole roster most of the bench/ other pitchers also came up through the farm system.

You can hate on the Yankees all you want but this isn’t the 2001-2006 Yankees that tried to buy championships. ( Which never really worked out ). Most of the trades that have happend have been through trading prospects away this offseason as well. We weren’t just throwing money at Free agents.

That argument is SOOOOOOO over used and weak.

Thanks for the Carl's Jr and Hardee's update.

I have wondered a time or two what happened to Hardee’s. Apparently they are still around

Melo's short list...

According to KFAN this morning, DJ said that Melo’s short list of teams he want to go to is New York and….Houston. Not sure where he got that though.

by jbuxxy on Aug 17, 2010 12:31 PM MDT reply actions

If

he gets traded, why reward him by letting him go where he wants to? This is the thing that frustrates me the most about sports. Shut your mouth for one more year and then bolt, if it’s that bad. The Nuggets offered him a contract extension, hard to imagine things have gotten that sour that fast.

by P_Dizzle on Aug 17, 2010 1:10 PM MDT up reply actions

If Denver has come to terms with the fact that it would be better to trade him than keep him than they would have to listen to Melo.

The alternative for Denver is to let Melo walk in free agency like Toronto and Cleveland did, but if they can get a good player back, then a trade might be worth it.

The reason that Denver has to listen to Melo’s wishlist is because no team is going to give up anything to get Melo, unless they believe he will sign a contract extension with them.

Houston could offer Denver a pretty nice package, actually. They have all those 1st round picks from New York. They have a $7 million trade exception, so Denver could save that much in a trade. They could offer young talent in either Jordan Hill or Patrick Patterson, and they could give Denver a serviceable small forward with an expiring deal in either Shane Battier or Jared Jeffries.

In fact a trade of Melo for Jordan Hill, Shane Battier, 2 first round picks of New Yorks is pretty good.

New York could offer Eddy Curry, Anthony Randolph, and Danilo Galinari and a couple future 1st round picks.

NY can offer more talent, Houston can offer much more salary relief and a chance to get under the tax.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

I'd watch the Hornets.

They are trying to do everything they can to keep Paul in N.O. WOuldn’t be surprised if they tried to trade the bank to get Melo and keep Paul happy.

Though they are pressed in assets, I bet they could get it done if they wanted to bad enough.
