New AK interview (Paging Gleb Dok)...

Gleb Dok (or any other Russian speaker hanging out here), your assistance would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think I heard AK say the words Boozer, Brewer, and Korver (said with Russian pronunciation which sounds kind of cool), Al Jefferson, Raja Bell, Kobe stopper and maybe Sasha (AK's daughter).

P.S. Please tell me that at the end, AK says that he has to end the interview and/or run because he has an appointment to get a haircut.

All comments are the opinion of the commenter and not necessarily that of SLC Dunk or SB Nation.

Dear Zeus, can his hair get any worse?

At this point, if he showed up to training camp with a Dr. J afro I’d be thrilled. I will never figure out why this awful cover your ears, cover your eyes look has become such a trendy thing. And I’ll never figure out why a guy in his late 20’s is following this trendy junk like some 13-year-old.

That said, I’ll grit my teeth and deal with it if AK can stay healthy.

But should a 28-year-old guy have Bieber Fever?

That’s what is most disconcerting.

And Moni’s right-this is worse than the Bieber cut from last year.

Mark Sanchez did?

Wow. Just wow. And he’s the QB the Jets are pinning their hopes on. Logical progression from Broadway Joe to today?

what he was sporting last season was the bieber cut.

what he’s sporting now…is…i don’t know, but it’s significantly worse, with the way there are long pieces behind his ears and is long in the back.

i remember during an interview last season some reporter told AK that the guys on “Inside the NBA” were making fun of his hair and he said he didn’t care, bc his wife likes it. maybe i need to be directing my “get a haircut” pleas at masha.

this is like a longer bruce lee cut

a cut a number of guys in fighing video games probably have . . .

Not Bieber...

Last year his hair I thought was leaning toward a traditional Russian Van’ka (common guy from fairy tales) style. He looked very Russian to me wearing it. The one he sports now seems to be more European and I like it, it has an idea behind it (last year’s version looked like he simply didn’t cut his hair). Considering that he is Russian, he doesn’t care what Americans think. Which is a pretty cool attitude. If he were trying to adjust to your tastes, he’d burn his books and get nice earphones with a short cut.

Don't worry about the hair

He’s only growing is so long because he’s going to cut it and have a really awesome mohawk again.

what is it with Jazz fans and their obsession with hair styles?

Not trying to come off as a dick here, and I know it’s the peak of downtime so everyone is looking for something to talk about, I’m just genuinely curious about this because it seems like every time a Jazz player has a slightly alternative hairstyle it’s in the headlines for as long as it takes them to change it, or until the fans get used to it. It just never even occurs to me to be concerned with how their hair looks until I hear someone else talking about it or I read about it in the tribune. I know Utah is a deeply conservative state, but is everyone really that uptight here that a player’s hair style is newsworthy material?

I just remember when Fes bleached his hair two years ago, the local media seemed to be more concerned with how his hair looked than how the team was playing. And you could see Deron’s irritation when people would ask him about his beard last season rather than talk about how he played. Maybe it’s just me because a person looks the same to me with a buzz cut or dread locks, but really what is with the concern over player’s hair styles in this state that it takes precedence over performance?

by darkcoupon on Sep 11, 2010 3:23 PM MDT reply actions

What else, exactly, am I supposed to comment about with this post?

I don’t speak Russian. :)

And Deron’s beard was an issue, because he apparantly said that he wouldn’t get it trimmed until the Jazz won 5 straight. So it becomes part of the story of their muddling about last November and December, and part of the story of their huge turnaround in January.

As for Andrei … his hair’s a story because it simply looks terrible.

pretty much everything Yucca Man said

and that i comment on players’ hair because i happen to notice it, not because I am in Utah (which I’m not).

if deron hadn’t told the media that he wasn’t shaving the jazz won five in a row, it wouldn’t have become a big deal or deal of any size. he had a beard during the Olympics, and I don’t think it made any headlines.

there’s no performance to judge over the summer, so…here we are.

Fair enough

I’m not talking about this site specifically because, like I said, it’s the peak of downtime and what else is there to talk about regarding an AK interview that’s in Russian. I’ve just always been curious as to why Jazz fans seem to be so concerned over player’s hair styles in general. Unless it’s something over-the-top crazy like Ron Artest did in the playoffs, or like Rodman used to do, I really don’t see any reason behind people talking about it or writing about it as much as they did with Fesenko’s blond hair.

Yes, AKs hair looks awful, But the real question I have about AK now

Is…Will he re-sign??? AK is a huge part of this team’s success, and the Jazz better make sure we re-sign him. I’m going to say something now that most of you would disagree with…if the Denver Nuggets called us up and offered a swap of Anthony for AK I would turn it down. Why? Because Anthony can do one thing. Score. And not even efficiently at that. Is he a great rebounder? A good defender? No. We don’t need another scorer, we do just fine in that department. But AK does it all, including a respectable 16 or so points if we give him the chance. So, yeah, I would take AK over Anthony. I’m not going to give a list of people I would and wouldn’t trade AK for, but it’s a lot shorter than most people’s would be.
The question is not do we want him to re-sign, but how much do we re-sign him for? I initially thought around 7 mil a year. After really thinking it through, I’d go ten million a year.
Unless AK insists on leaving, I hope the Jazz don’t use him as trade bait at the deadline. And I hope he retires a Jazz man.

by ut2006 on Sep 11, 2010 4:30 PM MDT reply actions

I've considered the AK/Anthony trade as well

…and came to the same conclusion. Anthony would step in and instantly want to be “the man.” He’d be a cancer to the Jazz just like he is in Denver with his volume shooting and complete lack of defense. On the other hand…it’s very intriguing to think about what Utah could do with a big 3 of DWill, Melo, and Big Al. If Melo could accept his role with the team it could be the Western Conference version of the super friends.

I’d say AK would be worth $10mil if he wasn’t so injury prone. $7mil sounds about right for him considering that he’s usually hurt a good chunk of the season.

Melo>AK

I’m sorry if u think AK>Melo you need your head checked

by utahmanami on Sep 11, 2010 8:03 PM MDT up reply actions

Melo>AK

Well … Melo’s a better scorer. Actually that’s a ridiculous understatement. To me Melo ranks right with Durrant and Kobe as far as his ability to score anytime, from anywhere on the court, regardless of who’s defending him. I’ve praised Wesley Matthews and CJ with gusto for their D on Melo during the playoffs (and they did a great job), and Melo still poured in 30-40 points, while shooting a reasonable percentage. Melo is simply brilliant as a scorer.

But AK’s a better passer, a slightly better rebounder, a better shot-blocker, a better ball hawk, a better 1-on-1 defender, a better help defender, a better attitude (looking past his 2007 melt-down), and he never, ever gets razzled by a bad call or defenders trying to push him around a little. AK’s also the king of doing little things to help his team win that don’t show up in the box score (like deflections, altering shots, etc.).

Plus the number of games they’ve each missed the past 4 seasons is eerily similiar.

So who’s better? Well, it depends on how much you value scoring over everything else, and how much better AK is at the other stuff than Melo. Is it as big a landslide as Melo’s scoring ability over AK’s? Or are they closer than that?

But the one thing that I believe indisputably is that the Jazz, with their set of players (particularly their scorers) are better off with a healthy AK in their starting lineup than with Melo. Seriously, they’ve already got 4-5 guys who will score fewer points than they would on most other teams — they don’t need another scorer, even one as good as Melo.

I got the crap beat out of me in Provo one time

by Yucca Man on Sep 11, 2010 9:07 PM MDT up reply actions

I never said AK>Melo

But name one way that trading Melo for AK would make the Jazz a better team. He’d just be another log in a jam of scorers. He’s an elite scorer, for sure, but that’s all he is and we already have 4-5 guys who can drop in 20+ points on any given night. Aside from his amazing scoring ability, he really doesn’t bring anything else to the table.

by darkcoupon on Sep 12, 2010 4:00 AM MDT up reply actions

AK's value to the Jazz is 10M

If AK doesn’t get hurt any more, his value to the Utah Jazz is closer to 12-14M. Assuming his average of 65 games per season, maybe around 10M. Put AK on another team that would value his quickness, length and hustle at Power Forward and his value rises to 15-17M.

There’s no way his value is 7M as suggested. IMHO, he is no worse as a player than Okur, who makes about 10M. He is better. And he is also a better overall contributor than Boozer, although I expect Carlos do very well next to Noah. This is the best situation for CB, where somebody is ready to clean up after his subpar effort on the defensive end. Wishing all the best to the Jazz of the East.

by bbn on Sep 19, 2010 11:05 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm with you

The list of players I’d want instead of AK is very, VERY short. Particularly with this Jazz team, where scoring is the last thing on earth they are in need of.

I invite anyone who wants to trade AK to rewatch the Jazz from January to March and look at how much AK’s play transformed the team into one of the best in the league.

I got the crap beat out of me in Provo one time

by Yucca Man on Sep 11, 2010 8:48 PM MDT up reply actions

It all depends on the team...

For the Jazz, Anthony would not be a good fit. Kirilenko fills a need Anthony can’t. I also suspect Anthony would not like Sloan and his style much.
Teams aren’t just about lumping together scorers. There has to be defense, passing, chemistry. AK fulfills that better for our team than Anthony. Why sacrifice chemistry and defense we know AK provides for Anthony, who won’t play great defense, won’t crash the board, and take a lion’s share of shots. Anthony has talent, certainly more offensive talent than AK. No one said AK > Melo…an expansion team would certainly take Anthony over AK. But for the Jazz? You bet you’d take AK. If the Jazz had scoring issues, sure, take Anthony. But we don’t.
AK is valuable to the Jazz, but a superficial approach to stats won’t reveal that. I used to be disgusted with AK until I got the bigger picture of stats. Scoring is exciting, sure. But points are only one statistic that only tell a part of the whole picture. I don’t mean to be down on Melo, I’m just trying to emphasize that AK is an important part of the success of this team, and that the Jazz should make a concentrated effort to incorporate him and re-sign him.

This is the exact interview I watched and found in text form and posted about a wek ago or so

I just figured not to post the video because it’s just him talking so not very helpful and the text you guys could actually translate with Google. I did think about doing a PrintScreen shot of the video just so you all see his hair haha, looks like it was a big hit, judging by the many comments. Just to help some of you cope with his “mop” of hair, it isn’t to copy Bieber or the shag that seems to be trendy here in the US. A lot of Russian athletes, specifically soccer players (which thats the biggest sport over there of course so everyone looks up to them and tries to cut their hair like theirs) grow out hair like that. So it’s actually a Russian thing (not that I would ever, EVER grow it ut like that lol) and not a Bieber thing.

As far as trading him, I would personally never do it for a few reasons but one man reason for those of you who want to trade him here it goes..

Mathematically it does not make sense to trade him because the value of a player we get in return will be < in value and > in $. Here’s my reasoning and I totally sold myself on this idea so hopefully I’m not just an idiot and you all kind of understand what I’m talking about and buy into it as well. From watching this interview, AK clearly states that he doesn’t want to move back to Russia and play there (one reason he gives is that his kids go to school here and he would hate for them to have to go through a huge culture shock by moving to Russia). He also clearly states that, and I quote, "have no desire whatsoever to play for another team rather than the Jazz (goes on to say how much he owes to the Jazz organization in terms of his basketball ability but more importantly because they made him into the person that he is now). All of this was definitely sincere by the way, as far as I could tell when I heard him say all of those things. Third, he said money is definitely not the issue here, quote, “can’t chase all the money in the world”, also saying that he’s earned quite enough over his career.
Ok so to my point now, with those 3 things in mind, the Jazz have all the playing cards in their hand sort of say. The Jazz can get more “value per dollar” out of HIM more so than out of ANY other player in the league. An extreme way of saying this, he will sign for any amount of money that the Jazz offer him just to stay in Utah!!! Are you kidding me!!?? Why would we pass up on that, when alll we talk about sometimes is how hard it is to get players into Utah and have them stay here (the whole concern that Deron doesn’t even live here in the summer now and that could possibly be a sign of him leaving the Jazz). AK47 is a rarety in all sense of the word. He is a rare with how he plays on the court, his personality, his situation with how he wants to stay in Utah and his measurements therefore ability to play multiple positions. No brainer to me, sign AK for cheap…

by Gleb Dok on Sep 13, 2010 1:49 PM MDT reply actions

I think everyone agrees with your premise, but you have to wonder, what does "cheap" mean to us, the Jazz FO and to Andrei?

I get the feeling that when all is said and done, Andrei doesn’t care that much about his next contract at all, but try explaining that to his agent, who will be looking to get Andrei the most money possible. To Jazz fans and Andrei supporters, we here him say stuff like that and we think, we could sign Andrei for $3-6 million a year. But that might not even be Andrei’s meaning, and certainly not his agent’s desire. So what is the right amount of money the Jazz should keep Andrei for? Every fan has a different opinion about that. Personally, I think Andrei is worth $8-10 million a year from here on out, but many fans would disagree with that. If we can convince him to play for MLE money (not to actually sign for the MLE, but around that value) then that would be a steal. Even if he signs for 8-10 million a year, the Jazz could still use the MLE to acquire another good player. That is assuming that the new CBA doesn’t muck things up completely.

The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

by clarkpojo on Sep 13, 2010 2:18 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes, very true

The concept of what “cheap” means to me or us and what it means to Andrei could be completely different. However, the concept that I have in my mind is based upon his situation so no matter what “cheap” means it is cheaper than another player in the NBA with the same statistical expectations for the next few years. So if we found a statistical twin to AK in the league, he would ask for more money than AK because he wouldn’t care about Utah, and we’d actually have to overpay that “statistical twin” just to get him to come to Utah.
But of course you’re right, when it comes down to it, not AK, but his agent will make a lot of the decisions and going back to my “twin” scenario, if AK’s agent is more money-hungry than the “statistical twin’s” agent, then what I said in the beginning of this reply wouldn’t be true at all.

looking at the salaries of a few guys like battier / scola etc

I’d have to say something (hopefully w/ incentives) that’s got a base of $7.5m per going to $8.75m max in final year of a 4 yr contract.

but i agree, i think his asking price will be higher than my low ball offer (look at the salaries other guys get in the L)

after all, AK does. if Gasol signed for less than he did back then so too would have AK, i think. he just wants to be paid fair market value.
