What would your All-Time NBA and Jazz teams look like?

In the off season you have a lot of time to think about things that don't really matter, but are fun to discuss. I was talking with some of my buddies about an all time team. If you could put any 12 players on a team what it would look like? I tried to be unbiased. (I would have started Stockton, but settled to just have him on the team.) I also wanted to put Jerry West instead of Kobe, but Kobe is probably better. This is what I came up with
Starters
PG- Magic
SG- Jordan
SF- Bird
PF- Malone
C- Russell
Bench
G- Stockton
G- Oscar
G- Kobe- though I hate this part
F- LeBron - I'm not thrilled about him either
F- Duncan
C- Kareem
C- Wilt
The conversation soon went to individual teams all-time teams. (The Celtics, Lakers, and Sixers can all put some scary good teams out there.) So naturally we debated about the all time Jazz lineup. I also thought this would be a great feature on a video game to be able to play as the all-time teams for different NBA teams. It was a fun discussion and this is what we came up with as the all-time Jazz team.

PG- Stockton
SG- Pistol

15 Man Roster:
PG: J. Stockton, D. Williams (IR1: R. Lopez)
SG: P. Maravich, J. Hornacek, D. Griffith
SF: A. Dantley, A. Kirilenko, B. Russell (IR2: K. Korver)
PF: K. Malone, P. MIllsap
C. M. Eaton, M. Okur (IR3: A. Carr)
Carr better defense than Carlos. With such a strong inside with Karl, I picked Korver on the team because he’s a good three point shooter. This isn’t the BEST team from the standpoint of best players from each position — but I think one of the better ‘teams’, where guys will compliment each other.
Crunch time line-up would be: Stockton, Williams, Kirilenko, Malone and Okur. Two great passers, two good passers and three three point shooters. We’ve never had that on the floor at the same time anchored inside by Malone. (unless it is close, then we have to bring Horny in if they are fouling) AD does not make crunch time lineup because he would disrupt floor spacing with Malone in there. Pistol does not make crunch time lineup because he did not have same killer instinct as the two other guards do.

Stockton to Malone- The perfect combination!!

MonSTARZ forever!
I'm going to post based on different ideas (i.e. Not just a list of who are the best players of all time):
I’m thinking of roles, from alpha to 12th man/towel waver. Who do I want as my 12th man? Who do I want to come off the bench and put up 12 points in 4 minutes. Who do I want to come in off the bench just to smash people around? Who will be most likely to play well together, how will shot distributions play out, what kind of defense is there, etc. I’m looking at a real team, not an all-star team. And I’m not remotely trying to be unbiased. I’m glorying my biases (which means it’s Jazz-heavy, because that’s my team and those are the players I know the best). So here goes:
My all-timer team:
F – Bird
F/C – Duncan
F/C – Russell
G – Stockton
G – Wesley Matthews
The primary bench:
G – Dennis Johnson
F – John Havlicek
F/C – Dave Cowens
F/G – Matt Harpring
The emergency 10th guy:
Big Shot Bob
11th and 12th guys:
Mugsy Bogues
Fes

The explanation
Bird’s my favorite alpha/nobody-in-the-league’s-even-close-to-as-good-as-him guy ever, so I’m building a team around him.
Yes, Duncan over the Mailman. Because Duncan can take over all aspects of the game when necessary (21-20-10-8 to win the finals), but he has the personality to willingly accept being second banana plus the intuition to know when each role was needed. Only twilight years Mailman had would have been willing to be a sidekick. Duncan would have been willing in his prime.
Russell at C. Because he was a great passer and because a front line of Duncan and Russell would be about as impenetrable as I can imagine.
Stockton because I want both a great spot up shooter, but also a guy willing to initiate offense more than he finishes it. And I want the hard-nosed attitude and defense.
Wesley Matthews. I know everyone’s shaking their head about this one. But the truth is I’ve got 4 stars in the starting lineup, and I need a garbage man. Considering what the other starters provide, here’s what I want: a guy who (a) shoots spot-up 3’s, (b) makes great backdoor and through the paint cuts for layups because everyone is paying attention to the other stars, © plays solid defense against any SG’s and SF’s (so Bird can defend whichever is weaker), and (d) acts as the official garbage play guy of the starting lineup. I thought long about both Reggie Miller and Ray Allen as my starting SG, but they just don’t have the defense, the hustle-play, nor the backdoor, weak side cuts. They are superior players to Wesley, but I couldn’t think of anyone who would do what I wanted from this position the way Wesley did. If anyone has better memory than me and can think of a better starting SG that gives what I want, feel free to suggest. Till then, I’ll take Wesley Matthews. He’s the best example I can think of right now.
The main Subs:
Havlicek for my guy to come off the bench and pour in the points. We forget how good he was, how hard-nosed he was, how he could play for 46 minutes a game, how he was the 3rd leading scorer when he retired, how he got an 8-minute standing ovation at his last game in the Boston Garden, and how he was the original 6th man.
Dennis Johnson as the primary guard backup, because he played great defense, he was clutch, and he could play both guard spots. I’d rather have a great combo guard as my backup than split the minutes between someone deserving 12-16 minutes behind Stockton and someone else getting 20 or so behind Wesley. Give me DJ for 36 minutes.
Dave Cowens as the primary backup power forward and center. Same idea for DJ. I want one great guy giving me 36 minutes at both spots who plays balls-out the entire time, than get two guys who warrant 16 or so minutes apiece. Cowens was an undersized center, but he relished guarding bigger guys and making their lives miserable. I like that.
Matt Harpirng. His role is simple: make life miserable for whoever the talented, big-time scoring swingman happens to be. To beat them up on both sides of the court. To smash them like linebackers on defense and pound into them like fullbacks on offense. To make the Melo’s and McGrady’s of the world turn into whiny little dandelions
10th Man:
This is the guy the coach turns to when nothing else is working, when the other players aren’t making it happen. The guy the coach says, just go in and do what you do and see if it can magically turn this game around. So I take Big Shot Bob.
11th and 12th Men:
These are the comic relief. The towel-wavers. The guys dancing with the cheerleaders at the timeout. The guys the crowd starts chanting for when there’s 5 minutes left and the team is up by 25. I can’t imagine how awesome it would be to see Mugsy and Fes jogging up to the scoring table together. The crowds would riot in delirium.

Bruce Bowen, in his prime, was better than Wesley Matthews.
I love Matthews, but a lot of guys fill that job you are talking about. I mean, Scottie Pippen would be that glue guy you describe. He played second fiddle his whole career. In fact any of the ’92 or ’96 olympic team guys would be willing to just play for a winner. And lots of guys would fill that role better.
Besides, Stockton and Bird are such unselfish players, that you can add Michael Jordan to that lineup and they work together just fine.
The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.
Don't know why I couldn't think of Pippen
He’s perfect.
Bowen was a better 3-point shooter and defeder than Mathews. But Wesley made more all-around contributions. That’s why Wesley was my example.
But Pippen is actually the guy I’m looking for. He’s my starting SG.
I got the crap beat out of me in Provo one time
for 12th guy I'd definitely pick Adam Morrison
I can’t get enough of him when he is cheering. The dude doesn’t see the light of day, yet he is possibly the most involved guy on the team. Definition of “positive”.
For my Jazz team
Same thing: not best players of all-time by position, but a team that makes sense and fills all roles together. And before we even start, here’s what Sloan did: re-wrote the playbook to mirror 2003-05. So the two guard spots are interchangeable, the two forward spots are interchangeable, and the center is the unique position (The Stockton and Deron years have been different, the PG is the unique position, SG and SF are interchangeable, and the PF and C are interchangeable).
Starters:
F – Malone
F – Kirilenko – I really debated Harpring here, because AK’s less effective when he’s not happy, and he’s not happy when he’s not involved, and with Malone/Deron/Stockton his role will be smaller. But in the end I went with AK and the belief that he’ll just be his all-over-the-court-disrupting-everything self that I love.
C – Eaton
G – Williams – with the altered scheme both guard spots are the same, so Deron won’t have to feel miserable because he’s playing SG. And he’ll get the backup PG minutes.
G – Stockton
Main bench:
G/F – Pistol Pete – I don’t know if he’d like it, but I think he’d be great as the first guy off the bench, the guy to just shoot and shoot and shoot and shoot.
C – Memo
F – Dantley – I also don’t know how he’d do with a more limited role, but I like his play better if he’s NOT dominating the offense for 36 minutes a night
G – Hornacek – plays Korver’s role from last season.
10th Man:
Paul Millsap – the guy Sloan puts in when nobody else is listening and playing right. Millsap will ALWAYS play right. He’ll always do EXACTLY what Sloan asks. He’s Jarron Collins with, you know, actual basketball skills and athleticism.
11th and 12th Men
Griffeth – I really want to give him a bigger role, but I think Hornacek was better. So I’ll just stick with the ESA crowd going crazy the last 5 minutes of the game, salivating to see Dr. Dunkenstein do his work.
Fes – I want the comedy. I don’t know what I’d do without it.
I got the crap beat out of me in Provo one time
PG – Stockton
SG – Jordan
SF – Glen Rice
PF – Malone
C – Shaq
Rice was my favorite player, so i added him, what!
Way to not be objective :)
As the ridiculous dude who put Wesley Matthews as my all-time starting SG, I appreciate everyone who holds fast to their favorites.

My All-Time Jazz Team
Before I reveal my team, I’d like to ask a question:
Wouldn’t it be great if you could include ANY player ever associated with the Jazz in any way, and just assume that said player would be in his prime? That way, you could put guys like Tom Chambers and Dominique Wilkins on the team. Anyway, here are my choices (assuming a 15-man roster):
G: John Stockton
G: The Golden Griff
G: Deron Williams
G: Jeff Hornacek
G: Pistol Pete
G: Rickey Green
F: Karl Malone
F: Adrian Dantley
F: Thurl Bailey
F: Andrei Kirilenko
F: Truck Robinson
F: Bryon Russell
C: Mark Eaton
C: Mehmet Okur
C: Antoine Carr (I know—he mostly played forward during his career but played quite a bit at center for the Jazz. Besides, I couldn’t bring myself to put Ostertag.)
Honorable Mention: Jeff Malone, Paul Millsap, Carlos Boozer, The Brown Bear, Jeff “The Franchise” Wilkins

Jazz Roster
I went with Utah Jazz players only. Guys who hit their stride in New Orleans were left out.
Starting Lineup:
PG: John Stockton
SG: Darrell Griffith
SF: Adrian Dantley
PF: Karl Malone
C: Mark Eaton
Reserves:
PG: Deron Williams
SG: Jeff Hornacek
SF: Andrei Kirilenko
PF: Thurl Bailey
C: Mehmet Okur
PG: Ricky Green
SF: Bryon Russell
I really think you could make a case that Andrei is the best Small forward in Jazz history. Imagine AK and Stockton playing together.
Or imagine a lineup of Stockton, Hornacek, AK, Malone and Eaton. That frontcourt would give up no easy baskets.
