Is Andrei Kirilenko Asking For Too Much? - The Downbeat - #640
When AK told the Jazz that he would be willing to play for a discount, that was all and good. We tend to forget though that agents don't like to give discounts. So if you're thinking you're going to get AK for $5 million or so, think again. From Chad Ford,
Kirilenko's original asking price -- four years, $40 million -- came as major sticker shock to a lot of teams. He's lowered the price significantly over the past few days (three years, $26.5 million), but now that the Pacers moved on to David West, he's in a bit of a quandary. The Jazz would like him back and other teams, like the Nets and Kings, have shown interest. But so far no teams are biting.
The most recent price come out to $8.8 million a year. Considering Caron Butler just got a three-year, $24 million deal from LA, it's not completely out there. They're pretty similar in stats even if their styles of play are different.
On the other hand, what would you pay Josh Howard?
Kirilenko is also being courted by the Kings and Nets. He has yet to decide if he will come to the NBA or stay in Russia.
Chad Ford was also on ESPN 700 yesterday talking about the Jazz (mp3) and free agency. One of the interesting thing he says about Enes Kanter is that when he was back in Kentucky playing against the likes of DeMarcus Cousins, Kanter was killing him. Take that for what it's worth.
This is significant for Hayward. From Jody Genessy,
The daily devotion's results: 10-plus pounds of muscle. His matured 6-foot-8 frame now weighs 220, up from a rookie listing of 207. He's even got some guns - no controller needed.
For as much as we talk about Evans's skinny frame, Hayward wasn't that far behind. This next statement reiterates what John Hollinger said about Hayward in his player previews. This time it's from Earl Watson,
Gordon's such an unselfish player ... (and) has to learn to be more selfish offensively scoring the ball, and he has the ability and skill to do it," Watson said. "He's so talented and so quick, way more athletic than people think.
Let's hope for a for assertive Hayward this season.
Looks like Ronnie Price is officially gone now. From Alex Kennedy,
Ronnie Price will officially sign with the Suns later today. It's a one-year deal.
Good luck to Ronnie Price. He didn't always have the stats but he was everything a Jazz fan could want in a Jazz player.
Tuesday poll...

have a hard time believing AK's reported asking price
2. I believe Chad Ford also said in the same interview that AK met with Prokhorov in New York over the weekend (and AK played in Russia on Saturday), so take the rumors for what they’re worth.
I just wish AK would drop his agent at this point of his career..
..I can dream right? I feel like he really would settle for around $5-6 mil. if not for his agent who’s job of course is to get him the highest paying contract possible :(

It's true
Andrei isn’t asking for that much. He honestly hasn’t asked for anything. His agent is asking for that price.
Sadly, too many players (as in pretty much all of them) pretty much stay out of the negotiating and leave it all to the agents.

I have always wanted to have AK back.
He’s been a Jazz man for so long, It would be tough to see him play for another team. If that’s what he expects to get paid, I say we let him walk. That’s way to much for in my opinion.
8.8 isn't horrible in and of itself, but for the role we expect for him this year, it would be.

I'd pay Josh Howard about $5-6 mil.
That way he’d be movable at the trade deadline. Because I’d probably want to move him at the trade deadline.

you would?
considering you have no idea what he could bring to the team.
you guys are crazy, i understand loving AK and all of that, but it’s time to part ways, we knew the day would come.
if we do sign howard, how do you know you’ll want to move him? what leads you to believe that?
I'd only do it if it were a low risk proposition
The stuff I was reading out of Washington said that he wasn’t a great guy in the locker room, especially for the younger guys.
I’m not positive I’d want to move him, but here are the two scenarios I’d probably encounter:
1) He plays poorly, but he has a manageable contract, so you flip him to a playoff contender who’s hoping he just wasn’t properly motivated. You got a free trial just in case he becomes awesome, but he didn’t.
2) He plays well, so you flip him for draft picks or some other good player, because he won’t stay happy in Utah very long.
I suppose there’s the case where he plays absolutely mediocre basketball and is also a locker room cancer. That’s probably the worse case scenario.

AK should pay the Jazz about 2Mil/year for 4 years.
Make up for the absurd amount he was making the last 4 years.
Even himself out as the 6-7 Million player he really is.
oh...boy...!!!
You can’t fault him for that. He was the best player on the team when he signed that contract

Pay the Jazz back for screwing up his career?
I will always believe the Jazz stunted his growth when they went away from him being the primary playmaker & facilitator.

When I first heard about Josh Howard
I felt like it was for leverage against AK’s agent. I think I’m on to something, as the Jazz would be crazy not to sign him for $5-6 mil. Problem is, somebody else will want to do the exact same thing.

I'm currently thinking he'll sign with the Kings.
They seem to really, really want him.

Almost $9 million/year for the AK is too much if you're the Jazz
Sad, but it’s true.
Also sad: I think it’s reasonable if you’re a contending team looking for a guy that can help put you over the top.
He’d be worth that much for a team like Orlando, maybe the Knicks (playing PF with Amare at C), the Lakers (shudder), the Clippers, etc.
And that’s kind of the real issue. I think he will give the Jazz a hometown discount. Probably not $6 million less per year. Probably more like $1 million less per year. Which would be great if other teams were only willing to pay him $6 million. But if they’re willing for the 9 (and I think he’s worth it for the right team) … then it just won’t work.

I totally agree
He has a lot of value to certain teams, and Utah isn’t one of them. I really think that AK still feels like a solid contributor in the NBA, so he’s going to look for a situation where he will get serious playing time, or somewhere that he can push a team over the top and earn a ring. I kind of doubt he wants to be part of a rebuilding process in Utah and spend a lot of time on the bench or mentoring young guys.

I dunno why people are amazed AK
is asking for that 10 mill or 8.8 mill. It’s called Free Agency and bargaining. What kind of idiot wouldn’t go into negotiations asking for the high end of what he’s worth? What’s he supposed to do? Walk in and say he’ll play for 2 mill and hope a team will say “No, no. We’ll pay you 6 million.”
That being said I don’t think AK is coming back unless its in the 5-6 mill for 1-2 years. If it’s any longer the contract should be front loaded so his pay decreases as he gets older.
I don’t want Howard for 5-6 mill. He’s worth 3-3.5 mill.
Glad to hear Hayward bulked up.
Goodbye Ronnie. Im still a huge fan! Appreciate your hardwork and unwavering energy.

Non guaranteed contract. He is basically working out for a spot on the team and a guaranteed contract.
The same is true for Gilder, Reynolds, Tinsley, and McCloud.

Ronnie Price's Exit
I can’t agree with your assessment of Ronnie Price. I’m glad not only that he’s gone, but that he’ll get paid elsewhere. He became an horrid component of a poor team.
It's hard, because he is awesome and such a fearless guy, but he doesn't belong in the NBA. Good for him for sticking around, but he isn't good enough.
The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.
I think he is, but in a more open offensive style.
Most of his looks ended up being 3s and long 2s. Very bad for him.
