Utah Jazz Waive Four Players
Well, that was quick
The Jazz has waived 4 players: Paul Carter, Trey Gilder, Keith McLeod and Scottie Reynolds. Roster now stands at 14.
— Jonathan Rinehart (@jonrinehart) December 21, 2011
What's odd is that none of them got any playing time on the court and won't be with the team tonight as they take on the Blazers. Normally, the Jazz have held onto training camp players until after the last pre-season game.
Not on that list is Jamaal Tinsley. With Corbin leaning towards keeping three point guards, it appears that he has made the team. We'll see if he gets any playing time tonight.

I'm not happy that Reynolds didin't get any playing time,
but I mostly agree with you. Meh.

He's the 3rd string point guard. What happens when, not if, Devin Harris misses games due to injury?

Yea me too, wish we could at least see if he can play..

Im that one guy that did that one thing at that one place that one time...
I agree with you
But Reynolds game is pretty much the same as Ronni P without the insane hopes. I suspect they knew with the compressed season that injuries will force them to use their 3rd string PG at some point. Sad to say, but Tinsley would probably be the best person to run a team if it was necessary.
If I had my way, Burkes would be the 3rd string PG.

They just have to make one guy inactive. Probably rotate between Tinsley and Evans. And someone is going down with an injury in the first two weeks.
The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.
that's not true
you can only have 12 active, with 13 necessary on the roster. so with 14 we will have two sit. and until harris goes down with an injury i think tinsley is 1 and whoever is in the dog house might be #2
My mistake. I think we can only afford to sit Tinsley and Evans and sometimes Kanter or Okur. That's sad that Evans won't be active often.
The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.
I think you are right
My guess is that most nights it will be Evans and Tinsley that are inactive, but I do expect quite a few injuries …

why does Jonathan always type
“The Jazz has………” that might be correct and proper, but it sounds like a redneck hick from the backwoods. I wish people would just say “The Jazz HAVE………..”

I don't think that's correct anyway
If I name my cat “Mittens”, it’s not appropriate to say “Mittens like milk”. The context of the noun is what matters, not alternate meanings.
Wrong
“The Jazz” is singular.
The syntax of “the Jazz has” seems weird because the majority of our sports teams in the U.S. have plural names.
But put it in another context: soccer and Manchester United. You will never hear or read “Manchester United have added Bob to their roster.” It sounds absurd. It should be: “Manchester United has added Bob to its roster.”
In fact, you could argue that we use incorrect grammar for most American sports teams. Think again about the Jazz. It is syntactically singular, but it is also in meaning. The Jazz is a single team. Not lots of teams, but one team.
Same with “The Bulls”. It is one team. Singular. This is actually similar to your cat named Mittens. Your cat happened to be named a plural noun. Same thing here. The team happens to be named a plural noun. But it’s still just one team. Singular.
So you could argue that we should write “The Bulls has saved the Jazz and signed Carlos Boozer to its roster.”
Anyway … that’s probably a lot more than anyone cared to know.
And for what it’s worth, I always use plural when talking about teams. The Lakers are losers. The Jazz are going to kick their butts every game within a couple years.
The singular used for American sports teams just sounds weird.

I think the general practice (in American sports anyway)
is to use the location as a singular entity and the team name as a plural, i.e. Utah has done this, the Jazz have done that.
With team names that usually used for singular entities (Jazz, Heat, Magic) etc. it sounds like you’re referring to the concept if you use it in the singular. “The Heat has put LeBron James on the bench”…did he mess up in the fourth quarter or get sunstroke? Not sure.
actually to me when it is "the heat has"
it sounds like someone is talking about themself in the 3rd person i.e.
“do you smell what The Rock is Cooking?”
or “The Jazz is going to ROUGH YOU UP!”
or “The Heat doesn’t understand what you are insinuating”
All this fancy grammar talk
is making me dizzy. I used to keep up with conversations like this…
…then i took an arrow to the knee
thank you for adding jazz fan appropriate examples
i think it helps illustrate the concept better when it hits home with the audience too
We use
Team names as plurals because while the team may be a singular entity, it is consisted of visible individuals, so in our minds, we see it as a plural. Corporations on the other hand, are also made up of individuals, but we don’t see them that way, so we refer to them in the singular. My .02

I am a hick in the backwoods and it sounds funny to me also.
When it sounds funny to someone from Central Utah that is when you know you have it right.
Rats!
I was hoping they’d at least keep Scottie on the Inactive List…

If a player is inactive does that mean they cant travel or sit with the team?
by Stockton2Malone on Dec 21, 2011 4:39 PM MST reply actions
Usually they don’t travel, but they can. They do sit with the team, usually in street clothes.
