Utah Jazz Make Lineup Changes, Paul Millsap To Start
Jazz starters tonight will be Harris, Bell, Hayward, Millsap and Jefferson
— Jonathan Rinehart (@jonrinehart) December 30, 2011
Millsap definitely deserves the start. I still don't know why Bell will still get the nod. We'll see Derrick Favors responds to this.

a few thoughts
Raja is going to start because, what the hell, he has some blackmail thing going.
Favors going to the bench because of early foul trouble is kind of a dick move. it’s not like they were playing him in the 2nd quarter at all. On the flip side, off the bench maybe he doesn’t feel pressured to perform (jerry excuse for young players), and maybe against other bench dudes he can stay on the court for longer?
Still, Malone started and fouled a lot as a young player. But he got playing time to still develop.
Millsap starting is a logical no brainer. Esp with how Kanter/Favors have been playing on offense.

I actually kind of like Favors going back to the bench
Not because he deserves it, not because it’s a classy move (it’s not, it’s a dick move), not because of the foul problems (I sort of put a lot of the blame on Al, Devin, and Raja … not everyone can cover everybody’s mistakes without fouling).
But at least in the second unit he’ll have someone pass him the damn friction’ ball.

Yippee.
I agree, Sap deserves the start. I threw up in my mouth a little when I read the name “Bell,” though. Also, the definition of insanity is doing what you’ve always done and expecting a different result. Harris, Bell, Al, and Sap all started last year, and we all know how that worked out. Although the lineup wasn’t the only thing that contributed to the 8-20 finish, it certainly didn’t help.
I still have faith that Coach Ty is giving Raja a grace period of 5-10 games because he’s a vet, and will bench him posthaste when that period ends. That’s all I can think of, beyond all the blackmail conspiracy theories out there.

This bothers me.
I love millsap and I love his heart but as a 6th man he is in the running for 6th man of the year. As a starting PF he’s just an undersized big who is easy to exploit. Have we not learned from last season and so far this season that when Al and Sap are on the court together we have one of the worst defensive frontcourts in the league? Those 2 should not be getting heavy minutes together!

And combine that with one of the worst defensive backcourts in the league
Harris and Raja.
Oh my.
I think Gordon’s a decent defensive player, but he can’t cover all five guys like AK could. This will NOT go well.

Every post you have made lately I have thought “wow, I was thinking the exact same thing!”

Against Phili makes sense for Millsap
Brand is also a shorter PF and they should match up well. Bell…no comment.
My prediction
Jazz will begin every game by allowing the opponents 20 points in the first 6 minutes.

With this starting lineup, absolutely. At least it gives us a lot more garbage minutes to play the old guys.

Does it bother anyone else that Ty's been preaching defense
And he start’s the four worst defenders on the team?

And am I the only guy that notices a couple things about Favors?
- The Jazz were leading and keeping the opponents in check both games until Favors was yanked for fouls. Then the Lakers/Nuggets immediately went on a run from which there was no return.
- Favors got early fouls when paired with terrible defenders. When paired with good defenders (Kanter, Hayward, Burks, Earl), he had his killer game against Portland. Ridiculously small sample size, but still it’s there.
- Would it KILL the coaches to play guys who can do defense? Why are we always filling the lineup with 3-4 defensive horrors and then hoping one great defender can cover for them all? How about we fill the lineup with 4-5 guys who are somewhere between good and great defenders?

It would kill them, evidently.
Agree w/ your takes completely.

Yeah, I'm with you. No clue why they preach D then play offensive guys.
Not new either, the classic example was always Boozer. Still have no clue why Sloan liked him so much.

I simply cannot believe the team would bench Favors and leave Bell in.
Absolutely unfathomable.

Final post here for now
I am not shocked at all to see Millsap in place of Favors. I expected this. I mostly disagree, though I think Favors will kill it playing with guys who actually pass it to him.
But to see Raja still starting, when CJ’s played better, when Burks killed it last game … when both guys are so obviously superior defensively and offensively, I just don’t get it.
I’m beginning to think Ty will never get after a vet for suckage.

Why is Bell still in there?
Pound for pound, Favors played much better than Bell, contributed with points and boards, and only a few fouls. Bell does nothing. How does he not get benched as well? Gotta be in his contract somewhere….

i dont hate favors on the bench
if thats what has to happen to get him more time then fine. What I am praying will happen is he will sub in for al jef so they wont be on the court at the same time and he can actually touch the ball when in. so i dont mind that. Now bell starting, COME ON MAN. Its just painful to watch

And that’s pain for Jazz fans, not pain for the other team.

This is why I sometimes have a hard time defending Corbin.
Even if Raja has a good game, then what? He’s earned 5 more horrible ones?
I give Corbin the benefit of the doubt, but if he’s going to pull this stuff to create a culture or whatever, he’d better be successful by next year. I don’t think anyone besides Corbin feels this is a correct decision.
