Pauly M and the 3 position.

Hi there. First fanpost here so dont judge too harshly. I was thinking about Pauly M and him being undersized as we all have heard for the 4 position aka the Power forward. So, I was thinking about him posiibly moving to the 3 position aka the Small Forward. As you all probably know Lebron James is also a 3 and he has the exact same physical measurables as Paul Millsap (203 cm and 113 kgs - sorry Im from Europe so i think in metres and kilos:) Anyway, one could mae the point that Lebron is a freak of nature being that agile, fast and explosive for his height and more importantly his weight ( he is still pretty powerful and can take a beating) So, my question is could Millsap reinvent his game and start at the 3 positiion, what do you guys think? Is it impossible, improbable or, even, the only way for him to remain in a Jazz uniform? Maybe it is too late for such a transformation for him, being 26 years old, or maybe not? I never will underestimate Paul and his will, drive and determination, so I wouldnt rule it out but he has to move far away from his comfort zone and take a gamble, possibly lose some weight, and for what? He has established himself as a solid player, so maybe he would prefer being traded than trying that hard to become something he (probably) never has been in his career up to this point. The way I see it, it is an option worth considering for the coaching staff/front office but I highly doubt it will happen and Paul Millsap will remain a 4 in this league, whether in a Jazz uniform ot not. But, as I said that Lebron guy is just as tall and heavy as Paul and is playing the 3 position, as we all know, pretty well. Anyway, enough with my words, what do you think?

Things to consider:

A. Match ups: If Paul is paired against the quicker and more agile 3’s in the league he’s going to struggle. Especially if those 3’s can shoot from the outside. Millsap guarding Durant would cause problems because Durant is deadly from outside but has a quick enough first step to get by Paul if he comes out to guard him on the perimeter. On the other hand he could probably match up to say Artest at the 3 because Artest is slower.

You’d also have to think of positive matchups, can Millsap post up his man, etc etc.

B. Millsap’s shooting range: This also deals with Millsap’s match against his man on the offensive side. Can Millsap keep his man honest enough from the outside that his man can’t sag into the paint and clog up the middle. We’ve seen he can hit 3’s but I am not sure if he can do it very often for a high percentage. I am comfortable with him shooting 18 footers.

C. The Front court logjam: Honestly, I’d rather see Hayward and Miles start at the 2 and 3 position, with AK as a sub. I think Millsap or Jefferson should come off the bench as a 6th man and the primary scoring option. Favors needs to be getting a steady increase of minutes now. I’d have Favors and Jefferson start as the 4 and 5 because i think Favors can help Jefferson’s PnR defense better than Paul can. Meanwhile I’d have Paul and Memo come in as the back up 4-5 because I think Memo stretching the defense out with his outside shooting can allow Millsap to do his thing in the paint.

All valid points, yet..

If we continue speculating, at least in theory, if Paul loses some weight, he could become a bit faster. His 3 pt shooting is pretty good, I would say, i remember vividly that Houston game when he was “beastin’” :) from the arc in the last seconds. of course it is a small sample size, but i doubt it that he is a terrible 3 pt shooter who simply gets lucky on the rare occasions that he lets it fly from downtown. He has a solid shot, his mechanics are elegant and seamless, at least in my eyes.
I dont think Millsap would be content with coming off the bench. Odom does it, but he is coming off the bench for a contender (maybe an ex contender?). The way I see it Paul would want to start for somebody in this league. I dont doubt his professionalism but I dont think he would embrace the 6th man position. Therefore the only way for him to remain a Jazzman is probably to start at the 3 (that is if Favors is a lock at the 4 for years to come). And I like Millsap and think that we should at least try hard to keep him here. Of course there is always the option of starting him at the 4 and Favors at the 5 (according to some Favors would do a decent job at the 5 as well, although I doubt it)
So, essentially, if we are certain that feeding Favors his big minutes is the right way to go, the conclusion is that Paul will either be “demoted” to the 6th man position or he will be traded (most likely ASAP because of his good value contract). So, the way I see it, he will be traded and soon. Pity because he is a tough, tough player, a hard worker and a skilled guy. i like watching him play. He embodies, IMHO at least, Utah Jazz basketball.

Paul would definitely have to lose a chunk of weight, but I think it's possible.

It’d be a big gamble on his part to lose the weight unless the Jazz could guarantee him time at the 3. Otherwise, he loses strength and mass and could still be too slow for the 3.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to think that he could push his range out to the arc over the offseason.

I don't ever underestimate Millsap.

People always say things like, well it would work against certian matchups, but he can’t defend Durant. News flash just in, nobody can guard Durant. I tend to agree with you that I think he could slim down and work on his quickness and his outside shooting and be a solid 3.

Millsap isn’t stupid. He can see the writting on the wall as well as every Jazz fan can. If he wants to start, the only spot open for him to take is the 3. Heck Corbin played him at the 3 a few times to end the season. I think Millsap is doing everything he can right now to work on playing the 3. If Paul is who we think he is, he will improve where he needs to to get himself mins.

Milsap doesn't want to become a 3

Seems to me that I read an article since the season has ended that quoted Milsap where he stated that he was a 4 in this league and not a 3. It does not appear that Paul wants to change his game/body to become a 3.

by KEVIN_B on May 25, 2011 6:16 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think that's a big question

I definitely think he could slim down and get quicker, but I’m not really sure he wants to. It’d really be a pretty huge gamble on his part since he’s well regarded as a PF, but might not be as an SF. And once you slim down, it’s not that easy to go back up. A lot of fighters end up slower than they were to begin with after going down and back up.

also

There is something about the slow-twitch and fast-twitch muscle if you believe in that. apparently if you run a lot of distance running (which is required to keep low weight if you naturally have a bigger body) you develop slow-twitch muscles ie you are not explosive. I dont know how much of this sgot anything to do with this particular case though..

i think he could do it

but how good would he be? He played a bit of 3 towards the end of the season and I thought he looked pretty good, but Corbin said himself he doesn’t see Millsap becoming a starting 3.

I have to think his trade value (to pick up a solid wing) is worth more than him playing the 3

by zdid on May 23, 2011 12:20 PM MDT reply actions

I think that Paul at the 3

can be good in the right situations. Most small forwards would obliterate him off the dribble. Additionally, sure, he can post up most small forwards, but who is he playing with? If he is out there at the 3 with Big Al and Favors, that is 3 guys with marginal outside game. You can’t have three guys trying to post up and if you put one of those guys anywhere near the perimeter, the defense can just leave them there and double.

him becoming the permanent 3

inevitably includes him becoming a threat from the arc or near it, for sure. He has shot a good 3 pt % but as we all know he shoots rarely from there so, obviously he, himself, or the coaching staff isnt sold on his ability to bury that long shot on a regular basis. At least at the moment. maybe if he works on it he can get good at it – a 30 % is kinda required in my mind to be considered a danger from afar and spread the defense. then again its not just that easy, you know. you cannot magically turn into a 3 pt specialist overnight, but, you could at least try..and Horny is there to give him a hand – hopefully literally :)

Sloan

Hated the 3 point shot. We should see an increase in 3’s generally in the post-Sloan era.

He doesn't want to be a SF

I heard that Millsap got really mad after a game when interviewed about playing the small forward. He said something like, “I dont want to talk about it” and then stormed off. Anyone else see that?

by Rando3 on May 24, 2011 3:16 PM MDT reply actions

Havent heard that specific bit

But i remember him being interviewed during their locker clearing day interviews. (last day they were in the building) Someone asked him how he would feel if he had to start off the bench next season and you could feel he was reluctant to talk about it. he didnt answer that question and it is, at least in my mind, clear that he wont embrace the 6th man role either.

Love it

I love seeing Millsap, Favors, and Big Al together under the basket as the other team brings the ball down. That’s a formidable threesome right there.

by JohnnyClutch on May 25, 2011 10:46 AM MDT reply actions

If those 3 are playing together, it doesn't really matter if Millsap can stay in front of his man

There will be sufficient help and height behind him to cover it. I think it mostly comes down to whether he would want to play the 3 and whether he can develop his shot enough.

Milsap at the 3.5???

Why even start a true 3? I think the best lineup moving forward includes Favors, Milsap, and Jefferson. CJ has proven he can be a #1 off the bench Jason Terry type scorer and the West is a bigger conference anyway. I’d go with Harris (Knight or Walker) as the top PG Hayward at the Swing and run 3 post players daring the western conference to challenge us inside.

Favors is still a project, so I don’t know how many minutes he gets before he gets pulled for a scorer anyway.
