Him or Him?
Hey guys! Don't know if any of you were part of the old NBAwire.com before it shut down, but "Him or Him" threads were very popular. For those who don't know how it works, it is pretty easy.
1. I start it off by saying "Player X or Player Y?"
2. The first person to respond posts a comment. In this comment, they post their choice. They give a reason why, if they want to. They then post a "him or him" of their own. It does not have to include the previous winner. It can be current players, past players, college players, heck you could even do SLC Dunk posters.
3. Here is where it gets tricky. If you disagree with someone's pick, please post your arguments IN RESPONSE TO THE COMMENT, not a new comment. If you wish to answer the current "him or him", please comment under the article itself.
The more creative, the better. For instance, instead of just saying "Tim Duncan or Kevin Garneet", you can say "Tim Duncan or Kevin Garnett in 02" or "MJ or Kobe in their primes" or "Better 'fro: Ben Wallace or Dr. J" or "Bigger philanderer: Wilt Chamberlain or Dennis Rodman?"
I think you get it.
Anywyay, the first "Him or Him" is..................
Patrick Ewing or David Robinson, in their primes?
All comments are the opinion of the commenter and not necessarily that of SLC Dunk or SB Nation.

Totally disagree... Ray Allen all the way
Better defender, more complete player, without losing the clutch shooting
I am in no way affiliated with the blog of the same name.
Ray Couldn't carry a team. He is perfect as a 3rd option.
Reggie carried a franchise, was more clutch (ask the Knicks) and was a better defender than you are giving him credit, 35th all time in steals and a very smart player.
He also had a mental advantage as well and is also the only guy to get Jordan to lose his cool. Better Trash talker to boot.
I agree with that
I was definitely thinking of them as role players for a championship team, not as the “superstar” of a team.

Bird 84-87 was absolutely unstoppable
Magic never had that.
Bird all the way.
I got the crap beat out of me in Provo one time
Except in 85 and 87 when Magic stopped him :)
In this debate it is hard to separate them from their teams.
by Russell Kanning on Aug 17, 2011 1:17 PM MDT up reply actions
85 - Bird busted his finger in a bar fight, plus the Lakers sent 3-4 guys to defend him
And the Celtics only decent bench player (Cedric Maxwell) got hurt
87 McHale broke his foot
When the Lakers have Kareem + Magic + Worthy + Cooper + Byron Scott, busted limbs and injured players are a kind of big deal.
But I don’t know how anyone can say Bird wasn’t better than Magic those years.

The only correct answer is McHale
Sorry guys. I loved Hakeem, but nobody has ever done post moves like McHale in his prime. 60% from the freaking field.

I think you might be influenced by Bill Simmons' last write up. I think it's closer than the FG% argument suggests, because the dream took more fadeaways and jumpers and was the focal point of the offense.
The more you try to erase me, the more that I appear.

I think they are the best team in history. Everytime I hear a story about Bird’s trash talking and stories about McHale you can’t help but smile.

Bird and Jordan seem similar in their enjoyment of trouncing people and pushing their teammates.

At the very beginning
There should only be one open question (no answers yet) at a time. If you’re the first to respond, you pose your own question.
So to pose your new question, you should have first answered Jeffersap’s open one.
Rules are in the original post by BigBenSportsGuy.
I am in no way affiliated with the blog of the same name.
Well, and in the first few comments after that
I am in no way affiliated with the blog of the same name.
The rules are the text of the fanpost
Basically it’s: answer the last question, then pose a new one.
You posed the Sap vs. Stock question, but never answered Chris vs. Sweet Lew.
As an individual act, I'd have to go with Millsap
If anyone disagrees, you seriously need to go watch the end of that game. The Jazz had no reason to even be in the game. 98-90 with 30 seconds left. Commentators talking about the Jazz dropping to 3-4 and the Heat heading for 6-2.
This is the sequence:
Millsap drains a 3 on a seriously broken play (:28.7, 98-93)
Arroyo 1/2 FTs (:27.3, 99-93)
Deron drains a 3 (:21.9, 99-96)
Arroyo 2/2 FTs (:19.3, 101-96)
Millsap drains a transition pull up 3 (:12.1, 101-99)
Arroyo 2/2 FTs (:10.1, 103-99)
Millsap drains a rainbow 3 while fading slightly backwards off of a horrible pass from D Will (4.3, 103-102)
D Will fouls out trying to deny Arroyo the ball before the ball was inbounded (1 shot and the ball for Miami)
Arroyo 0/1 FT (:4.3, 103-102)
Wade 1/2 FTs (:3.4, 104-102)
Millsap putback off the glass without touching the floor on an awkward rebound off the rim from CJ Miles’ shot (:00.0, 104-104)
In overtime, Millsap had 2 huge free throws at a super clutch time with the Jazz down 4.
The studio commentators said Millsap was 2 for 20 from 3 for his career before sinking 3 in a row at the end of the game. He finished with 46 points on 28 shots. He scored 11 points in 28.7 seconds. It’s one of the most ridiculous things I’ve seen in sports, ever.
I am in no way affiliated with the blog of the same name.
amen. that was pretty crazy.
Ranks up there with some of the great moments of sports- Marcus Allen Super Bowl Run, Reggie MIllers 13 second scoring binge, Lynn Swann’s Super Bowl acrobatics. Just a couple off the few of my head. I realize there are many, many great moments in sports- and Millsap’s Miami game was pretty sweet. I’m glad I witnessed it.
Green Bay Packers 13...next closest team 9.
Yeah, I'd put it up there with Reggie Miller, but Reggie's is definitely better
He had a key defensive play to go along with his offense AND it was an important playoff game. Plus, it was less time, 8 points in 9 seconds. Also, it was pretty smart of him to step back for the 3 after the steal instead of taking the immediate easy 2.

I think the lower expectations of Millsap help his moment
Also, this was the big, bad Heat, fresh off the Decision. They were still villians. To see 2nd rounder Millsap stick to them was pretty cool. The skill it took and the sheer luck—probably about equal. But Miller’s was in a more important game.

That's a toss up
As a Clippers fan, you know that eventually Sterling will die, and as a Portland fan, you know you deserve everything you get for the poison pill contract offers to Millsap and Matthews.
By the way, you guys are killing the game. It’s him or him, not this or that. What we’re heading towards kinda reminds me of So I Married an Axe Murderer:
What’s worse?
You go to your favourite restaurant…
…order your favourite meal,
take a bite…
…and under the steak
is a scabby Band-Aid.
Or….
Or being electrocuted.

For Utah or Sacramento?
I’ll take Greg Ostertag, since had a few days on which he could hang with anyone.
I was referring to the 1998 trade
Where the Jazz got Seikaly, but he refused to report because he didn’t want to come to Utah.
He would have replaced Ostertag as the starting C that year.
I got the crap beat out of me in Provo one time
I was aware of your subtext
but I was also making the point that unlike SLC, both wound up playing for Sac-town
I used to think Seikaly refused as well,
but I digged down some internet archives. He seemed willing to come- even talked to Karl Malone. But he had a foot injury, and the Jazz appear to have nixed it.
Incidentally, rumors were also swirling around that time that we;‘d bring in Kevin Willis. I’d love to know what one of those two guys could’ve done against the Bulls

I'll say Griffin right now
But if Favors develops as I think he may … he’ll be close to the offensive player of Griffin plus the biggest defensive beast in the league.
I reserve every right to change my mind quickly.

How was Dwight Howard's defense during his first couple seasons?
I ask in response to your comment about Favors being a defensive beast, trying to get an idea of development patterns.
The fear I have with Favors though is that he could just be the next PJ Brown too…he and Kanter are giving me fits of fan-xiety. (fan anxiety)
Green Bay Packers 13...next closest team 9.
Stats wise they are very comparable
Everything here is per 36 minute rookie stats (and I’m looking at Favors post-trade)
Blocks: DH-1.8, DF-2.2
Steals: DH—1.0, DF-0.9
Rebounds-DH-11.0, DF-9.3
Scoring, DH-13.2, DF-14.6
Fg%: DH-52.0, DF-52.9
Ft%: DH-67.1, DF-56.1
Assists: DH-1.0, DF-1.5
82games.com doesn’t have this info for rookie Howard, so is is a comparison of both player last year:
PER against: DH: 11.9, DF: 13.5 (PF), 7.2 ©
The average center PER last year was 14.2. Average PF PER was 17.1. So DH held opposing C’s to about 2.5 below league average. DF held opposing PF’s to about 3.5 below league average, and opposing C’s to 7 below league average(!). Favors spent about 60% of his minutes at PF and 40% at C, so the C stat isn’t skewed by a significantly smaller sample size.
DH was a starter, and he played more minutes. That means he was possibly playing more time against better opposing players, plus he had to sustain his level of play for a longer period of time. But still, I don’t know how anyone wouldn’t be encouraged to see these numbers from Favors last year and how they compare to the best C in the NBA.
