Game 20 Post Game Thread / Vent Away -- LA Clippers 107 Utah Jazz 105
I would normally put a recap here, but I'm not in any mood to do it . . .
C'Mon Jazz fans, we almost beat a great team. The Clippers (or Thunder) will win the title this year. Clearly. Don't you see how many high lights they get?

I really love how our second unit played.
I will never understand why Tinsley got so much burn at shooting guard though. That was our chance to build a lead with Paul off the floor. Whatever, I am done crying about it. Please play Burks.
I am fine with Tinsley getting play at pg.
Not at SG, at the cost of minutes from Hayward or Burks.
After this game I really detest Chris Paul
More so than when Deron was playing here

can you blame them after the last visit?
Jazz scrubs showboating, fans chanting, announcers talking trash. that was definitely on their minds.

Showboating =/= talking trash
But we all knew the Clips would be motivated because of the way the last game went.
I am in no way affiliated with the blog of the same name.
Jazz were actually clutch on FTs in the final 2 minutes, go fig.
The Jazz actually played well in the final 2 minutes save for that weak and-1 foul on Big Al. They had the chance to let Blake attempt 2 FTs and blew it.
flop was killer
should have been and 1. goes the other way and paul drains a jumper. Big al foul was really stupid.
It was a dumb call
But the whistles blew a lot for the Jazz too. Had plenty of opportunities. Jazz shot themselves in the foot.
i dont mean to blame the refs
just a giant wuss move by blake in crunch time. man up and play some d.
not to mention
blake would have been fouled out. That’s a 5 point swing plus an offensive reb that Blake got a few minutes later.
I remembered Big Al missing a FT.
But apparently it was with 3 minutes or so left. Jazz actually did quite well in the second half on FTs, just really terrible in the first half.
i wish they would change the rule on fouling up 3 late in the game
very anticlimactic. smart, but boring.
I disagree.
It’s a smart play. If anything, they need to take all the timeouts away in the last few minutes. Let them play…let the players make decisions and play. I hate the predictability of the final minute of a close game – foul, free throws, timeout, rinse repeat how many times possible in 38 seconds.
I'll make it coach.

Bummer...
Not sure what good you take out of a game where you were outworked. Clippers wanted it more tonight, gave more effort. Hard to be angry, also hard to blame it on the young guys. Pretty much got beat by Paul, Griffin, and Mo Williams.
cj 16 points in 21 mins
Favors 14 pts 2 blocks and a steal in 18 mins. thats about it.
Mo and Chauncey couldn't do much of anything while Gordon was guarding them
He played pretty well.

Blame this loss on that freaking girl that was screaming every time they were at the line
It was annoying as f#$% hearing that crap.
After today’s game I got no love for Griffin after that flop he did against Sap. THE NBA has gotten soft seeing players do that even if it’s our own guys doing it, it ruins the game.
J/k about blaming the loss in that chick, but it was annoying hearing that every freaking time

ESPN is so bad.
Just showed the end of the game on sportscenter. And in talking about the foul on CJ with 1 second left, up by three, said it was the worst thing to do. Giving someone 2 shots when they are down by three with almost no time on the clock is the worst thing to do there, huh?
he should have at least
tried to act like he was shooting. same with harris
I agree with hamfist on playing Tinsley.
I am at a loss as to why Corbin played Tinsley—the Jazz’s 13th man—even for a nanosecond in a competitive game like this. There is a reason Tinsley doesn’t play very much—he is not very good. He kind of reminds me of Jarron Collins—all he does is take up space; he adds nothing positive on offense and is not a very good defensive player. The only reason to play Tinsley at all is if there is a blowout, or if everyone else who could possibly play point guard is injured. He should never be played at shooting guard, especially when Gordon Hayward was having such a great game.
Tinsley did absolutely nothing on offense and could not guard Williams on defense—Williams really hurt the Jazz during that stretch when Tinsley was in the game trying to guard him. On the other hand, when Gordon Hayward was matched up on Williams, he absolutely dominated Williams—it looked like an allstar playing against a D-league player. Williams was totally frustrated. Williams could not defend Hayward whatsoever, and could do absolutely nothing on offense against Hayward. Putting Tinsley in the game instead of Hayward took away the opportunity to get a lead on the Clippers during that critical stretch of the game. Hayward was having a great game tonight, but Corbin sat him on the bench for a large portion of the game, instead of leaving him in to help the Jazz pull away from the Clippers.
I put responsibility for this loss squarely on Corbin for making such a stupid substitution decision and then sticking with it for 8-10 minutes in a crucial part of the game, when it was obvious that it wasn’t working.
In that respect, this game reminded me of the Toronto game, only in that game, Corbin left Hayward in the game late in the fourth quarter and for all of the two overtimes when he was playing absolutely horrible, and when CJ was having a much better game. I felt that Corbin was responsible for the Toronto loss as well, with that stupid lineup decision.
In general, I think Corbin has been doing a great job this year, so it is hard to be critical of him. However, playing Tinsley for a long stretch in this game instead of Hayward, and keeping Hayward in the Toronto game at the end instead of playing CJ just seemed like such obvious bonehead moves to me—this isn’t the Junior Jazz “participation” league, where you are required to play everyone regardless of how well they can or cannot play. Therefore, play those players that give you the best chance to win for heaven’s sake.

I'm actually honestly at peace with the loss.
But at this point it is just baffling to me. I just don’t understand why you play Tinsley at the 2, after Earl goes out with an injury. I do think Ty has done a lot of good on the defensive end. I really like some of the things he is doing with the team. But there are times where I am just confused by what he is doing in regards to playing time.
The only explanation I have is that Corbin wanted to get Tinsley warmed up to play some minutes tomorrow night, with Earl probably being unable to play.
But he should have been trying to win tonight’s game first, rather than assuming that the Jazz were going to win regardless, so it wouldn’t hurt to play Tinsley to get him prepared for tomorrow. While it was happening, I was worried that such move could very well result in a loss for the Jazz, and that’s exactly how it turned out. With Hayward in the game instead of Tinsley, I’m sure Mo Williams wouldn’t have “gone off” for 8-10 points in that stretch, and I’m sure Hayward probably would have scored at least 4 points, or at least would have contributed a rebound or two, an assist or two and a steal or a block or two (compared to zero points, zero rebounds, zero steals, and zero assists for Tinsley)—enough to make almost a 10 point difference in the final score of the game—which could have resulted in a fairly comfortable win for the Jazz, rather than a loss.

The only explenation that I have...
is that the Clipps were running a 3-gaurd rotation for a while, but I don’t remember if it was while Tinsley was in. I think Ty is sending Burks a little hint that he needs to select his shots better before he gets more playing time. idk
Harris had many chances to make hustle plays and just stood and watched..his lackluster efforts combined with CJ being so consistently inconsistent are frustrating to watch every game
CJ's consistency?
That seems like a random thing to bring up about last night’s game. CJ’s game has matured a ton this year so far (getting to the line, less chucking). And Ty’s been more comfortable using him lately, though the Raja injury plays into that. In addition to maintaining this improved maturity, the next step in the evolution in CJ’s game will be to not be hesitant in big-time situations, like when he drove the lane late after B.Griffin had switched onto him.

Paul/Griffin NO Stockton/Malone
one other thing…i’m so tired of ESPN annointing athletes before they’ve earned their due…asking Mullin if Paul was better then Stockton (as a scorer I know I know) but still, Stockton and Malone would school Paul and Griffin. At some point in their careers they may be able to hang, but they haven’t proven anything, haven’t won anything, and have no business being compared in any shape or form to those 2 Hall of Famers!!
I really missed having Deron Williams here to school that smug little CP3.

Just came to say that despite the loss, you guys have a very good team.
Unlike most teams, the Jazz have glut of good big men. We didn’t have an answer for Jefferson in the first half. Your bench shouldn’t be overlooked either. I was surprised that Corbin didn’t go to the bench more in the 2nd half. I wouldn’t be surprised if your team makes the playoffs gets an upset against a higher seed in the first round.
Tough but good game for both teams. I agree that the officiating was horrendous. There were so many missed calls. For now, two instances come to mind. I remember a foul call on Blake when Milsap/ Jefferson clearly slapped him on the face, giving Blake a bloody nose. Another was when Blake took charge on Jefferson when it should be a no call. Hey, at that point, we’ll take whatever we could take.
Anyway, I feel like I’m over staying my welcome. I Good luck to both teams as the season progresses.
when you hear the Clippers, it’s not going to be a joke anymore. I can guarantee you that -BG32

Another Clipper fan here... ditto all of the above
And I’d like to add that the Jazz are the team that I’d least like the Clippers to meet in the playoffs. You’ve kicked our asses so many times it’s hard to keep count. Best of luck to your team.
Griffin had a spectacular game tonight on offense, and played well on defense, as well. As a Clipper fan, you're lucky to get to see him every night. He is the one player in the NBA I would most want to see play in person right now.
By the way Griffin came out in the first quarter, you could tell he wanted to make a statement after being outplayed by Millsap in the last game between the Clippers and the Jazz. I agree with you about Corbin going to the bench more. It appeared that Favors was matching up much better with Griffin tonight than was Millsap, and should have played more minutes (especially since he was making his foul shots).
You guys also got really lucky when Corbin for whatever reason decided to go with “graybeard” Jamal Tinsley, instead of with Gordon Hayward, when Watson injured his ankle late in the 3rd quarter. I thought that bonehead substitution by Corbin was the difference in the game. Hayward had completely outplayed adn embarrassed Mo Williams earlier in the game, but when Williams was matched up against Tinsley, he really made a big difference in the game both on offense and defense.
by Fesenko for President on Feb 2, 2012 12:50 AM MST up reply actions
I thought he did that cause Watson got injured a bit and I think Harris turned his ankle not too much earlier.
I have to say I think you guys are very lucky to have Corbin. I think you are one of the most well coached teams in the league. And you are practically a mill for bigs with nice post moves.
As Jazz fans, we all think Hayward could play point guard better than Tinsley--and that rookie Alec Burks could play point guard better than Tinsley--and both players are quicker and bigger than Tinsley.

Favors D
I thought the same thing about Favors guarding Griffin. Griffin beat Favors I think once in the fourth quarter, but it took much more effort than all the easy scores Millsap was allowing. The same thing happened in the Portland game with L.Alldridge. Millsap’s weaknesses have come out a lot in the past couple games.
by CJ's Smokehouse on Feb 2, 2012 8:34 AM MST up reply actions
Millsap is trying to stay out of foul trouble. But giving up points every possesion won’t help. He needs to D up and trust that if he gets in foul trouble Favors and Norbest ( big turkey) will come in and play well. I was vey impressed by them last night.
That’s true, Every time he gets two fouls, he takes that b-line to the bench. But Favors and Kanter are both playing pretty dang good. Millsap has been a stud, but his "short"comings keep showing up. At this point, I think Jefferson is closer to the all-star game. Not that Millsap is undeserving, it’s just there are too many all-star PF’s in the west.
by CJ's Smokehouse on Feb 2, 2012 9:23 AM MST up reply actions
You guys need to let your GM know that Kyrylo Fesenko is still available.
He’s a big goof off, doesn’t have a very good work ethic, has had some really strange injuries at inopportune times (“gastric distress” comes to mind) and is a horrendous foul shooter, but you can get him cheap, he is huge, he has decent athleticism, and he can really play good defense in the post, both on big post players and on wingmen driving to the basket—oh, and Jazz fans love him, mostly because he is soooooo funny. He’s clearly better than any of the Clipper’s backup big men.
We as Jazz fans are puzzled that after investing four years into his development (and he has progressed a long way since his rookie season), for some reason, the Jazz haven’t re-signed him this year, even though you can never have too many big men, and he can be signed for really cheap, as the 3rd string center, who can play a very important role at times (such as two years ago in the playoffs with Denver.)
by Fesenko for President on Feb 2, 2012 1:06 AM MST up reply actions
One reason he hasn't been signed by anyone is that he is coming off of a knee injury suffered this summer in the European FIBA tournament.
Even without having an injury, he was known to come into camp in pretty bad condition—but he would still be better than the Clippers backup big men, even out-of-shape. And, with Chris Paul passing to him in the post, he could probably score 6-10 points a game in a reserve role.
by Fesenko for President on Feb 2, 2012 1:21 AM MST up reply actions
Clippers fan here. I haven’t watched much of the jazz this year but I have to say you guys have a TON to be proud of. What an awesome, up and coming, well coached team you have there! Holy crap, in the scheme of things this win or loss means nothing but the effort and teamwork you players being is inspiring. Talk about relentless. They just never gave up.
What a fun game to watch. It had everything in it. Started out as a free-wheeling blitz and then turned into a total grind in the second half. This is the reason I love watching basketball. I am a big fan of the jazz now, a team that actually has POST Players (favors, milsap, Jefferson – holy crap).! Keep up the great support and stand by your great young team!
Hope we don’t see you in the playoffs till the WCF!

Yeah, lets blame corbin, and tinsley LOL
when all you have to do is make 3 more freethrows than you made!!
how many did they miss?>
Jazz – 26/36
Clippers 18/23
CLEAR advantage to the jazz, we didnt deserve to win this game. and we didnt deserve to win the Toronto game either. It’s sad that every loss/close win is coming down to a few missed free throws.
corbin needs to get those guys in the gym and shoot nothing but free throws today.
Your last sentence essentially blames Corbin for the missed free throws too.
The missed FTs were pretty brutal, but I think a bigger issue was how dominated we were on the boards. They had so many second chance points that just shouldn’t have happened. But I agree that we shouldn’t have won that game, and part of that reason is Tinsley added absolutely nothing in the meaningful minutes he played.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought only the head coach could determine which players enter and leave the game.
Tinsley was outplayed by Mo Williams by approximately 8-10 points, and Corbin is the one who put him in the game, and then left him in the game even though it was obvious he was grossly overmatched. And even though it was obvious earlier in the game that Hayward—who was sitting on the bench while Tinsley was in the game—was dominating Mo Williams.
Of course, missing free throws was also a big reason the Jazz lost the game.

Anyone gonna call
out Millsap for buying a ticket to the Blake show? That was a total joke on his part to stand there and watch that dunk fest. I was glad to see Favors had some pride and came in and put a body on Blake. Millsap was terrible last night and he is right up there in taking some of the blame for the loss.
I think some of that was a coaching decision
I don’t think Corbin wanted our bigs to get into foul trouble, after the first it almost stopped happening all together.

This was the most frustrating part of the game.
Favors was playing phenomenally and should have been in that last stretch. This seems to have been the perfect opportunity to go big with Al, Favors, and Millsap. Instead we played matchup with the clippers instead of forcing them to make adjustments.
yep, i would've played Harris - Hayward - CJ - Favors - Al
The Clippers had 3 PG at some times, so Millsap at the 3 chasing Billups would’ve been terrible

Hayward, Cj, Evans, Sap, AL
That makes our PF the shortest guy in from our team. but Favors was playing great he should have been in. Millsap was frustrated and it showed.
In the Pre-game interview
Millsap stated that you gotta get to Blake early to keep him from his spots, but if you don’t then get out of the way….(not a direct quote, but the meaning is the same). I HATE that attitude. I don’t care if you get posterized. I don’t care if you get in foul trouble. You protect the paint. I was so furious after the first 5 dunks/possessions. I was glad to see the adjustment late in the game.
That Favors/Kantor combo
Is looking like it might be an epic defensive front in this league. At one point I was watching their joint rotations on the pick n roll, the only established play I think the Clips run, and their baseline forces in awe of the footwork and awareness. These guys will be special together. I knew Favors would be a monster defender, but I remember vividly that one of the knocks on Kanter was his lack of defense. What a surprise.
Favors should have stayed in on Blake and the Hayward on CP switch should have been made in the third quarter, not the last 2 minutes. Whatevs. Ultimately, we lost this game because CP went apeshit. I am not crushed by this. We hung with a really good team at near full strength (except Caron Butler, of course) last night. No way around that. And the true Clips fans, some of the most long-suffering and devoted bunch in the league, deserve what they are about to see. I would love to see them go up against the Lakers in the playoffs.
Um yeah, Kanter
Kantor seems so much more, um Turkish.
I have to voice my thoughts on the game
I cant remember the last time I felt like Milsap wasn’t playing hard. He seemed to be complacent for much of the game.
As fun as Griffin is to watch, he has a LONG way to go before he’ll be an effective NBA player. His jump shot, free throw shooting, and post game looked really bad to me. I know he’s still young, but he has a lot to learn.
The NBA really needs to do something about flopping. It’s ruining the game.
Chris Paul is a beast, and I’m just impressed we stayed in that game as long as we did considering how badly he was beating us. Makes me realize how much I miss D-Will.
The Clippers are not championship contenders, unless they find a way to add to their bench. They are one injury away from being a sub .500 team.
I was not happy that we lost that game, but I didn’t expect that we’d win it. Overall it was fun to watch and out young team got some much needed experience.

"effective NBA player"?
I would certainly argue that he is currently very effective. He can get much better, but that’s just on top of his current production.
I am in no way affiliated with the blog of the same name.
We throw the phrase 20/10 guy around pretty loosely.
Blake is a legit 20/10 guy. His post game is getting better and better. There were a few times last night where he absolutely destroyed Millsap (I know he was playing pretty bad defense) posting up. And he is working on his outside shooting. The kid has been in the league 2 years and already averages 20/10. If you don’t think he is going to be very, very, very good for a very long time, I don’t know what reality you are living in. But yes he needs to do serious work on his FT%.
The Clippers probably won’t win a championship this year because they aren’t very deep. But they have two all-nba type players. I wouldn’t write them off completely.
If Caron Butler can come back and be effective, they'll be a force in the playoffs.
Could very easily be the #2 team in the West. Without Butler, they just don’t have the depth or size, in my opinion.
