Post Game Thread: Utah Jazz (14-13) @ New Orleans Hornets
Yay an incomplete comeback in the 4th quarter. A game where we should have won. A game that reminded many of us on twitter earlier in the day of the that dreadful game in 2009 when the Jazz lost to a 7 players Warriors team. Well it pretty much was the same.
Kudos to Ty for sticking with the young guys in the 4th. Thank you young guys for making an effort to come back, sorry our starters made it so difficult on you and dug too big of a hole (yo!)
Share your thoughts of the games here, things you liked, things you didn't like. Let it all out here!
Final Score: 86-80 Jazz loose!

but what about Howard? He needs extra playing time to shoot out of his funk.
Meanwhile if Burks misses one shot or turns the ball over, he can learn by handing out towels to the actual players.
#LetEvansDunk
You know it needs to be added. One of his big dunks could spark some big plays. Younger players seem to run off each others energy.

True
Guess you have to be on the court to dunk.

Devin Harris - 19 minutes
Devin makes 9.3 million, 2nd highest on the team, and plays 19 minutes. How can he still be around by the deadline?

Come on – he’s not a leper. Or a leaper. Or a basketball player worth even half his salary.
He can still be a good player.
It’s just not going to be on the Jazz/in the Jazz system. It’s a horrible match.
How about Minny?
Seems like there’s always room for a 5th string point guard up there. We could trade him for those awful “Muskies” jerseys.

Since the young guys got so much burn (all together no less)
I’m really not to upset at this loss. Burks showed his ability to get to the line, as well as some sick passes. I’d love to see him start averaging 10-14 min per game, and then hopefully upwards of that should his play continue to improve. I’d also like to see him get some minutes at the one with G Time at two.
I’m not looking forward to the slaughter tomorrow though… Unless the young guys play alot again!

Would it be worth starting the young guys?
I mean, think about it. OKC loves to make your run and shoot. The young guys could keep up speed wise.

Tough loss, but great to see the young guys fight at the end
Also glad you gave some credit to Ty, Diana. From reading the game thread, everything that happened tonight was Ty’s fault.
man so our starters were the ones to put us in the hole???
how long did it take for Ty to make a change…apparently too long i guess
Im embarrased for them
They gave them their 5th win of the season…Terrible

Alec Burks...
I haven’t been as high on the rook as many others on the dunk. I felt like the times when he was on the floor he was putting up decent numbers in garbage time against guys that were not 100% focused on the game.
I think tonight he proved that he certainly deserves some more time. I know NOH isn’t the most talented bunch in the league (especially w/ the injuries) but the minutes that he got tonight were good, solid minutes that will help develop him as a player.
Hopefully he gets some more time in the near future.

The problem is
that when you play NOH, the whole GAME is like playing garbage time. And we just lost. Yikes.

Talent wise, I agree...
but mentally you have to think that in Burks’ mind he knows those were “real minutes” in a game that we had a chance to win.

Ty was sweating like he was going to get fired
Haha, or sweating for screwing up once again.

that blank stare in his face is priceless
slcdunk should screen shot it and make it a caption contest
No such thing as a "sure thing"
I would have sworn that the Hornets had about a million more rebounds than the Jazz but the JAzz actually outrebounded the Hornets. Just can’t come back all the way from a lousy first 3 quarters. A lesson the JAzz seem to fail to learn: every team in the NBA can beat every other team on any given night. Loved the effort by Burks, hop it is not lost in the disappointment of the loss.
how many fts did we miss in the fourth?
could have been a different game

Patience
… is the key, folks. Gobs of it. The youngsters will get their time in the sun. With that, so will we Jazz devotees. Time is all it should take. We’re OKC of a few seasons ago, plus a couple of deadweight veterans.
a few seasons ago they were my beloved super sonics =(
but i always had the jazz as my #1 team ;)
and minus a superstar like Durant
I’m getting a little tired of this expectation, because Durant is a legitimate star, and despite all of our likable players, we don’t have that one "outstanding’ player who can dominate a game. Let alone two like OKC has in Durant and Westbrook.
I think that people are expecting that we'll get lucky
in the draft, like the OKSonics did with Durant and Westbrook.
"Shoot baskets, not people." -AK
I think we've gotten about as much luck as we can have in the draft. Two #3 picks,
4 lottery picks in the last two years, and projecting to have probably one and maybe two this year, neither of which will be higher than eight. I just don’t see us landing a superstar.
I wouldn't rule Burks out, he has star potential
Sadly you need minutes to realise your potential. Something that after tonight, hopefully, the Jazz start taking seriously.
i'd be okay with letting jefferson go with howard or harris tied to him
so teams are forced to take one of them off our hands lol…this has nothing to do with them playing bad or good, it’s just other ppl deserve their minutes more i think
Never Mind
… as mine was obviously not an appeal to the impatient, and therefore not directed your way. The slight possibility of Favors turning in to the modern day Dwight Howard, or of Alec Burks becoming a reliable go-to guy, or the heady play of Gordon Hayward being worth a damn to a well-rounded team in what is, after all, a team game, (future trades, picks, development of roster extant etc. etc) .doesn’t register with your kind.
It registers just fine
However, you’re comparing our team to a championship contender and telling us just to wait and we’ll be in that same arena. What I’m saying is that the Thunder caught lightning in a bottle, and it’s not easily replicated. Yes we may have some great young talent, but Durant scored 20 points a game during his rookie season. Westbrook scored 15 points a game and had 5 assists during his rookie season. Tell me how that compares to our rookies. It’s not in the same stratosphere, and obviously people like you just don’t understand.
They also got big minutes in their rookie years
Something our management will not allow. The OKC weren’t under the ‘win now’ illusion, and it seems to have been all the better for the organisation.
What I Do Recognise
… is one of those indecorous, internet fights, which I respectfully decline. If you’d like to resume the discussion in about 36 months, I hope to be here.
haha
you didn’t hear? It’s better to lose and hope to get star lottery picks.
It’s easier to hope and pray for that shiny new draft prospect every year and end up turmoiling in the gutter of the lottery with it. Being competitive and giving the youngsters an opportunity to play meaningful games IS a developing process!!
But it’s better to lose and just give the youngsters some garbage time and end up with a high pick for some.
In a couple of years, Westbrook's stratosphere may be looking up at Burk's
His athleticism doesn’t translate as well on TV as it does live, but Burks has that type of burst and speed. I thought he was going to destroy Kayman on that Dunk attempt. Out of all the young players, I can easily see Burks emerging as the best player.
I think if Burks averaged the same minutes Westbrook recieved his rookie years, their numbers would be comparable.
Also, keep in mind that the rookies this year did not get a summer league our an extended summer league, and I believe this set them back a little bit developement wise.

Burks is intriguing..
1: He’s tough
2: He’s not afraid
3: He can pass
4: He’s confidant
The more I watch him the more I think that he’s the type of player that is really going to need floor time, at game speed, in order to develop. With his type of game he needs reps to better understand how to efficiently use his driving game, + he needs time on the court with quality players to catch the quick passes he’ll be throwing when the shot isn’t there on the drive.
Jazz vs Hornets 2-13-12
This was a tough loss for the Jazz tonight. The Jazz just didn’t seem to want it as much as the Hornets did. Kaman walked all over the Jazz and had his way in the paint. It didn’t help that he was hitting 15 footers as well.
I wrote some comments that you should check out on www.jazznation.net. Let me know what you think about the analysis.
Was at the game. Some game thoughts...
- I think Hayward is the best shooter on the team by a pretty wide margin. I think I saw him miss two shots in a total 30 minutes of shootaround. There is no excuse why he only had 6 shot attempts. He should at least get 12 – 15 attempts.
- Al Jefferson’s footwork in the paint is simply amazing. Unfortunetely, after the first quarter, he started to struggle against Kaman.
- Despite this, the Jazz seemed to insist on running the offense through Jefferson, and hayward seems to be caught in transitioning the ball to him. Why not run a few plays to set Hayward up for a few shots?
- Kanter:
The good: Jefferson certainly is further advanced basketball skill wise, but Kanter, in my opinion, is superior to Jefferson from a physicality standpoint. Kanter may be slightly taller, but the biggest difference are their hands. Kanter’s hands are noticeably humongous, and you can see why he is able to wrestle away many loose balls that seem to slip big Al’s grasp. His ability to move on defense is also a vast improvement over what Jefferson can provide.
The bad: Something the Jazz do with Kanter that bothers me a little bit. They will pass the ball to Kanter on the elbow, but it seems that Kanter’s only option here is to pass. He will look inside, but usually just passes it back out to Watson, who usually then has to conjure up some low percentage look because the shot clock is winding down. I’m waiting for Kanter to get there and just take that jumper.
The Ugly: I got a good look at his bunny miff off a nice feed during the second quarter. Kanter looked like he rushed it a little bit and really didn’t gather himself to jump with enough force to dunk. He just needs to get a little more explosive. Sometimes I wonder if he is a little tired after not playing much basketball before this season.
Derrick Favors at times looks like he can do anything he pleases on the court. His touch looked very good tonight. Sometimes, he tries to do too much. I saw him drive himself into a triple team and he was stripped.
- Millsap had a bad night, but one thing I noticed is that he is getting doubled as soon as he touches the ball. It was evident that the Hornet’s defensive gameplan was to not let Millsap beat them.
- Lots of easy baskets missed by the Jazz tonight.
- Really fun watching how intense Raja Bell and Earl Watson are live, especially from a defensive standpoint. Unfortunetely, the refs called a lot of cheap handchecking fouls this game.
- However, you can’t give them a cheap and one on that fast Break, Raja.
- Burks is back! Best of all, he may be back for good. Some things that stood out too me.
- Despite being whistled for a couple of very questionable calls, Burks was solid defensively. I think I remember this being a conern about him during the draft. His athleticism clearly bothered Belenneli tonight during the 4th quarter.
- The hornets really could not guard him without fouling. If he continues to get minutes, I think we will start seeing him turn lots of these fouls into and ones.
- What is it about ex Mavs players struggling for the Jazz? Howard and Harris have certainly seen better days. Harris made some nice assists tonight, but he has to take care of the basketball better for the Jazz to have a chance to win.

Go GREEN WAVE!!!!
(Do you remember the Nagels?)
Your father taught me how to shoot a free throw.
I'll make it coach.
lol. It must have been awhile ago
I’m actually visiting him in Mississippi, and we went to the game last night at the hive, (side note: first time I saw the superdome with the Mercedez Benz upgrades. It looks awesome!) I did play baseball, but I didn’t play after college (I played at Belhaven in Jackson, MS). I’ve been in the military for the past 4 years. In fact, I just got back in the country a couple weeks ago. I’m currently living in tampa, and really want to see if I can catch the Jazz when the come to Orlando. I asked him if he remembered that name, (Nagels), and he said he thinks he remembers that name.
