Game 28 Game Thread: Utah Jazz @ Oklahoma City Thunder
Utah Jazz at Oklahoma City Thunder, Feb 14, 2012 6:00 PM MST
The Utah Jazz finish off their three games in three nights stretch with a rematch against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder dispatched the Jazz last week, and will look to capitalize on a road weary Jazz team. The Jazz won the first of the set against the Memphis Grizzlies, and the Jazz lost the middle game last night to the injury depleted New Orleans Hornets. The Thunder are never, ever, injured though. and will be looking for their 22nd win of the season. Or in Hornets terms, April.
It is disingenuous to say the Thunder are never injured; they have been playing the vast majority of this season without former Utah Jazz draft pick Eric Maynor. They are probably going to be without Thabo Sefolosha tonight as well. The only shake ups for the Jazz are that Tyrone Corbin said (and I'm paraphrasing a bit here) "Maybe that Alec Burks kid can play more than zero minutes a game, or something . . . someone who handles figuring out minutes should get on that."
Of course, he didn't say that. He did say practically nothing though. The good news is that I can get my laptop to boot up again, after 3 days of trying. Now I have to spend the rest of the night restoring files to it, and re-loading programs / updates. Fun. I know. I also found my parents, somewhere in Thailand right now -- they haven't been kidnapped by South East Asian gangsters just yet. So things in *my* personal life are turning around. Maybe tonight things turn around for our Utah Jazz as well?

At least our starters should be well rested.
They didn’t even bother to show up last night.
My wish list tonight
1) G-Time guards Durant well
2) westbrook gets < 20 points
3) All rookies and sophmores play 15+ minutes (save evans)
4) Evans plays any number of minutes i.e. > 59 seconds
5) Everyone plays with heart

I truthfully think it's both.
It’s not like other teams didn’t know he was good. They have scouting reports on him from previous years, but I think when his tank is full he can fight through it. Right now he is just tired and is getting beat up by bigger defenders.

Perhaps we’ve been confusing the basketball gods.

Harris is making the D-Will trade look more and more in favor of the Nets, no?
Favors is a good get, but I think if you’re the Nets, you feel pretty good about that trade.

This is the insanity with refusal to admit rebuilding.
In the desperate quest to win, when the team struggles Ty plays the kids less. The result, of course, is the team plays worse and loses more.

do be honest
I don’t think anyone in this disorganization knows WTF they are doing.
how so?
First they say we are not rebuilding, then KOC says something else. Then the whole Karl Malone debacle that Greg should have kept his damn mouth shut.
Here we have our young bench, that brought us back within 3 points last night. How much time have they seen? Not a whole lot. Ty claims to give credit(minutes) where credit is due. I’m not seeing it.
And, in all seriousness,
I have no idea what they’re doing either. I’m sure it’s a lot harder than using the ol’ NBA 2K trade finder, though.

They watch the vets not doing what they’re supposed to be doing yet continue to get minutes. Not a good lesson.
Evans
Tinsley.
I know I keep preaching that same line every 5 minutes in our game threads, but WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT. I honestly think Ty doesn’t know what he’s doing. To much Sloan rubbed off with the coaching abilities.
I don't think he has any idea the direction of the team.
And the FO is probably sending him some mixed signals, and his substitutions suck as a result.
that wouldn't surprise me
everything about the FO is discombobulated.
Either way, he'd be an improvement on Howard

100% objective here - Burks could be the real deal
I love following rookies. It’s usually a slow process unless they are a born superstar. Most rookies never pan out and leave the league before signing their first non-entry contract.
Burks looks legit. I know we are clamouring for any good news and really, really want Burks to be great. And you know, I genuinely think he could.
The guy has elite level speed. He has shown he can get to the foul line. In the very few minutes he gets he passes well and is making very few mistakes. His defense is showing signs of elite potential.
I really think he could be good. Who knows what the ceiling could be. But Coach needs to give him minutes. I know it’s like talking to a brick wall, but Howard and possibly even CJ don’t have the same potential as Burks. We know what we’re going to get.
In conclusion – let.burks.play

i don't think these minutes down 20
are doing the young guys any favors. at this point, make the players that made the bed lie in it.

that would be a slap in the face if I’d ever see it.
I disagree
at a minimum, they are building chemistry, and even if it’s against bench, they are still NBA players, and gives them time to figure things out at game speed.

I hate this.
It is a lose lose situation for them. They go off and it is only against bench warmers and means nothing. They suck and it only hurts their chances at PT. Not that I am arguing with you.

Well, Ty isn't sweating tonight
Last night, it’s like he jumped in the shower real quick.
Ty, the guys shouldn’t be tired. This is your fault for bad rotation.
i don't blame ty
he has a roster full of .500 players… resulting in a team with a .500 record.
what needs to happen is a meeting between ty, koc, and greg, and they need to realize they’re doing themselves a disservice by not playing the young guys. everyone else in jazz nation seems to realize that this team isn’t going anywhere, and most people would prefer to see the young guys play.

how about a rack of brand new basketballs
like that one kid in the AA baseball, was traded for 6 baseball bats.
I don't think Paul Millsap matches up well against Serge Ibaka, which puts the Jazz at a big disadvantage with Millsap starting.
I would like to see a starting lineup against OKC of Jefferson, Favors, Hayward, Bell and Harris, but with Bell guarding Westbrook, and Harris on Harden. Favors could neutralize the big advantage OKC has against the Jazz when Millsap starts and is matched on Ibaka. Also, I would like to see the Jazz bigs slam anyone that comes into the key for a layup or a dunk. On one play tonight Durant sailed in for a dunk from about 15 feet out, and Jefferson stepped out of the way to get a better view of the highlight reel, rather than fouling him hard and putting him on his butt. I think if Westbrook and Durant got planted on their butts 2-3 times when they went in for layups, they would think twice about it. Also, I think it would be good to put Kanter in to push Perkins around and wear him out, so he is not so effective on Jefferson on defense. Also, why not try Jeremy Evans on Durant for a few minutes. He matches up with Durant in stature and athleticism. He could also perhaps get some of the OKC bigs in some foul trouble by going up for slams.
The Jazz regular starting lineup does not match up well against OKC. In the future, I would hope that Corbin is a bit more creative in trying to get better matchups by playing Jeremy Evans on Durant for a few minutes, by matching Favors up with Ibaka, by trying out Bell on Westbrook on defense, and by putting Kanter in to bang with the starters a bit. It couldn’t be worse than what we saw tonight, and it might throw OKC off a bit.
by Fesenko for President on Feb 14, 2012 10:11 PM MST reply actions
We all know that the referees give OKC the star treatment, and they shoot 20-30 % more foul shots than anyone else in the NBA. And, the refs hardly ever call fouls on "super fouler" players like Perkins, Ibaka and Collison.
The Jazz need to play aggressive and physical to even things up a bit. For example, I’d like to see Westbrook and Durant actually get fouled good and hard when they go in for a layup, rather than being uncontested on the layup and then getting the benefit of a “phantom” touch foul call by the referees. On Offense, I’d like to see Jefferson, Kanter and Favors push and shove hard right back at Perkins, Ibaka and Collison, and force the refs to make a call one way or the other. Perkins should get 4-5 fouls called on him per quarter, but unless the Jazz bigs push right back, as hard or harder than he does, nothing ever gets called. Otherwise, if the Jazz don’t play aggressive an physical, in addition to the superior talent level, OKC will continue to have a 10-12 point advantage on foul calls every game against the Jazz.
by Fesenko for President on Feb 14, 2012 10:19 PM MST up reply actions
Favors
Not lost in this loss was the play of Favors. He continues to show good development and I hope he can continue to do so and hopefully lead to a starting spot. This will help in several ways:
Jefferson gets traded and the Jazz continue to load up on pieces.
For now, I’m ok with watching Favors develop and continue refining his game behind Jefferson. This is, of course, hoping that Favors is used at C.
