An Open Letter to Stan Van Gundy

Dear Stan-

Kudos for cutting through the crap and confirming that Dwight has asked that you be fired, even though he still denies it. At this point it seems your tenure in Orlando is pretty much over, since management has pretty obviously made Mr. Howard their General Manager - and even if they turn around and come to their senses, would you really want to keep working there at this point?

So you're probably trying to decide what to do next. Let me be the first to ask that you consider an option you may not have considered - come to Utah and coach the Jazz.

Yes, I know we technically have a head coach already. But let me put it this way. I happened to be in downtown Denver, in a conference room full of Broncos fans, when the news broke that Peyton Manning was headed to Denver. These are guys who loved Tebow and would defend him to the DEATH when he was their quarterback - but the second the Manning deal was announced they broke into a spontaneous roar. Fans get it when the team makes a move that's an obvious upgrade - and while Ty Corbin is a nice guy, you over Ty is at least a Manning over Tebow level upgrade.

So why Utah? Well, a fantastic young talent base, for starters. How do Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap, Derrick Favors, Gordon Hayward, Alec Burks, and Enes Kanter sound as a core to build around? Not to mention potentially 2 lottery picks in this year's draft? All these guys are good, like to learn, and would blossom with some real coaching. Ahem.

Second, Utah is just a nice place. Great fans, beautiful mountains, and believe it or not you can actually get a drink. Sure, there's some weirdness, but that's true everywhere. And we have a really cool new mall!

Finally, look at the wringer that Dwight put you through. And now look at what our GM did when it appeared Deron was leading us down the same path - he shipped his butt out on the next plane to Siberia. New Jersey. Whatever. Doesn't working for a team with a history of NOT bending over to please a fickle superstar sound nice?

I'm sure the media will assume your next job is to replace Vinnie's carcass in Lob City. But do you really want to work for Donald Sterling, with his amazing reputation for treating coaches well? Yeah, I wouldn't either.

Anyway, best of luck in whatever you decide to do next. And while I admit watching you and Jeff together on ESPN would be a hoot I hope you consider this humble proposal as you pick your next gig.
