Over the past couple of seasons you may have seen some of my Tweets with information and stats for each officiating crew assigned to that night's Jazz game. I have been asked multiple times over the years "what's your fascination with the referees?"
There are so many advanced stats and different ways for teams, fans and the media to evaulate each game, yet I have never seen an in depth look as to how officials may have an effect on the outcome of each game. Specifically in basketball where so many calls/non-calls at the end of games can swing the result so dramatically.
All of this led to me tracking the results for every Jazz game the official works and the free throws attempted for each team. After discussions with an NBA team (non-Jazz) executive I am going to be adding a few different items this year to the recaps that I post on SLC Dunk. The new information will include how many foul calls each official made, from which position they were in (Lead, Trail or Center), and which team the call was against.
While I won't be posting the full recaps after each game (espcially during the 2nd half of the season as my work schedule drastically changes), I will be continuing my tweets every game day with the information for that night's crew.
Without further ado, here is the information from tonight's game:
Date: November 6th, 2013
Opponent: Boston Celtics
Venue: TD Garden (Boston, MA)
Officials: James Capers, Derek Richardson, Kevin Scott
Final Score: 87- 97 (L)
Notes on Tonight's Crew:
#1- Kevin Scott worked the last game between the Jazz and Celtics, a 110-107 overtime victory for Boston on 2/25/13 in Salt Lake City.
#2- Kevin Scott also becomes our first "repeat" official of the 2013-2014 NBA Season having already worked the Jazz opener at home against Oklahoma City.
#19 James Capers:
Total Fouls Called: 15
Against Home/Away: 7/8
#63 Derek Richardson:
Total Fouls Called: 18
Against Home/Away: 9/9
#79 Kevin Scott:
Total Fouls Called: 7
Against Home/Away: 2/5
Notes on Tonight's Game:
-There were 18 fouls called in the 3rd quarter of tonight's game, only 22 fouls were called in the other 3 quarters combined.
-The Jazz did not attempt a free throw in the 2nd quarter, and there were only 6 combined FTA in the first half.
-A Clear Path Foul whistled on Jamaal Tinsley at the 6:29 mark of the 3rd quarter was over turned and changed to a common foul.
-I only needed one vodka to get through the game.
