There has been a lot of discussion whether Burks should be starting at the SG position and moving Hayward to the SF to replace Jefferson. To me it's a no brainer due to this being a "Season of Discovery" but today my question is how much difference is there in the two positions in the Jazz system?
I understand defensively that we would usually match up 2 vs 2, 3 vs 3 so that would be a factor depending on the opposing players, but what about on the offensive end? Are they both basically treated as "wing" positions and the plays interchangeable based on the skills of the players? Or is one position expected to stay in the corner more for the open 3 and the other more of a driver, cutter, creator? Or does it just depend more on who is in the game?
Last year Gordo played well at SF. This year not so much at SG. Even with Trey now playing his shooting is down. Is that more on him just adjusting to being the top offensive option and teams putting their top defensive wing on him, or just him being in a shooting slump, or is there something inherently different in the plays and options available from the SG versus SF position?
Horny was a do everything 2, AK the same at the 3, Hayward at the 2 or 3, Korver a spot up shooter at the 2 or 3, Foye only at the 2, etc. I am thinking the positions and plays are pretty much interchangeable based on the player skills but I don't know. Can some Jazz masterminds help me understand better?
