The chase for ROY, Tr3y vs MCW
So while waiting for a game recap, i decided to write this. Both Trey and MCW have had a phenomenal start to their NBA career. But, who is better at the moment? And what does Trey need to do to win ROY?
This is Trey's statline
And this is MCW's
Now, what do we notice? Offensively, Trey is matching well with MCW. They have similiar shooting percentages, but MCW scores more due to taking around 3 more shots per game and by getting to the line more often. However, MCW shoots a awful 67% from the line, which is NOT what you want from a PG. Trey shoots 90% from the line, so there is a huge difference. However, MCW still gets more points from the line making 3.6 per game to Trey's 1.6. Passing wise, Trey is alot more efficient BUT has less assist than MCW. MCW has around a 2:1 pass turnover ratio, while Trey's P:T ratio is better than 3:1. So passing wise, even though Trey averages less assist, i think he is better than MCW. However, the argument of 'Trey is currently better than MCW' blows into pieces when you look at the defensive stats. Trey averages 0.7 steals and 0.1 blocks per game, while MCW averages a monster 3.1 steals and 0.8 blocks. MCW also averages more rebounds than Trey (5.6 to 3.5). Alot of this has to do with size (esp the blocks and reb part) but still, this shows that MCW is a better player overall. Trey might average one foul less than MCW per game, but this is a small discrepancy that does not really affect the game.
So here are the results
Alot of you might wonder why the statline matters, but it does. Getting Double-doubles and Triple-Doubles really draws more attention to a particular player than if you average 20ppg. This is vital if you want to win ROY, to get the leagues attention. So, my opinion is at the moment, MCW is going to run away with the ROY award.
But what can Trey do?
- Increase passing. He needs to get more Point-Assist doub-doubs, so that it will attract the leagues attention as well as to pad his statline. If he can look for the open man more often and get more assist, it will be a huge help. This is definitely doable especially with Trey's low TO ratio.
- Increase scoring. I know i said scoring was a tie, but Trey can up his offensive game to the next level. I think this can only happen when his passing increases though, as then he would have more space to operate for his own shot.
- Defense. Trey is already a pretty darn defender, but think he needs to be more aggresive, especially in the steals department. If the opponent is taller than you, it is ideal to cut off the offense before he can even shoot.
Anyway, i am all behind Trey Burke for ROY. I just think he needs to up his game more, in order to win, even though some pages have Trey as no.1 for ROY. This is just my opinion though, so don't take it too seriously :)
