I have been firmly in the in the 'we can't judge Ty until after this season' camp. His unwillingness to change the starting lineup has been appalling. I have no idea what logic he is using when he keeps running out the same unit that just keeps getting trounced. I am seriously worried he is doing it to appease egos, or even worse, to appease agents. Ty this is your chance to show the fans something. Make us believe in you.
We have been playing significantly better basketball since Mo went down with an injury. And I don't think that is because Tinsley got a bump up into the starting lineup. I don't think Mo is a plus player. I think at best Mo is a break even player, and at worse he is a liability. Tinsley while creating shots for other people, cannot keep defenses honest with his atrocious shooting, making him also a liability. However Burks and especially Hayward are players who make the team better. They both have gotten either a more significant role in Hayward's case or more minutes in Burks' case since Mo went down.
As much as I love DMC, swapping him into the starting lineup for Marvin is not a solution. Yes the starters need more energy and defense. But you are swapping an under performing 5th option for an over performing 5th option. I just don't see that making a significant difference. Bad players need to play less minutes. And good players need to play more minutes.
Hayward and Burks need to start over Tinsley and Marvin. DMC needs to take the SF minutes off the bench and Tinsley needs to be the backup PG. Watson and Marvin are the two worst rotation players and it isn't even close. They are the ones who need to be getting DNPs not DMC. Tinsley and Foye are ok players in roles that are bigger than they should have. Cut those roles back down to an acceptable level. And when Mo comes back, don't inject him into the starting lineup. If what I suggest is working, don't ruin that with Mo dominating the ball. He is a great combo guard off the bench. Not a great starting PG.
I also want Favors to start over Sap. But I am trying to be realistic here, and no way will Ty bench Sap. But this is why I think a lineup of Burks, Foye, Hayward, Favors and Al would be the best starters. Favors has issues with being consistent offensively, but that is fine when he would be playing with 3 guys who are going to score. Hayward and Burks are capable of getting the ball to him in a position to be effective. He doesn't need 15 touches every game. Get him 5-10 good looks off of pick and rolls and cuts. He will score another 5-10 points off putbacks and just being an athletic freak. I was a fan of trying to get him to develop iso post moves. I am kind of over it, and it has nothing to do with Favors. Kanter is going to be a beast offensively in the low post. Kanter is going to be your iso post guy. We don't need two iso post guys. Let Favors be who he is. An otherworldly athletic freak who can score on putbacks and rolling to the rim, but who also is a game changer defensively. And yes his fouling can be an issue. Big guys who have issues with that typically learn to stop making cheap fouls or they don't stay on the floor. Are we really so shallow in the front court that if he fouls out we are in trouble? My views on Favors could be it's own fanpost but that is probably enough.
It is time for Ty to step up or he is going to lose what small portion of the fan base still thinks he can be a good coach. Again DMC for Marvin is not a fix. It is a band-aid at best. Stop playing your bad players.
