We have seen the Jazz struggle mightily against smaller teams or teams with a stretch 4 or a stretch 3 playing the 4 position. Basically any team that wants to play small ball with one decent post defender and loves to trap can beat the Jazz. A lot of teams are playing European style basketball now. One post player and 4 outside shooters in the game to space the floor and drive and kick. These kind of teams create mismatches on offense and they just trap and rotate whenever the Jazz try to take advantage of one of their players due to size, strength etc. Houston, Golden State, New York, and even Sacramento to a certain extent have given the Jazz multiple problems.
So what is the deal, why can't the Jazz adjust to this style of basketball? This one goes on coach Corbin!! He seems to be head strong and he refuses to either match up or roll out one of his own versions of small ball. The Jazz come rain or shine play two bigs in the game 95 percent of the time. Rarely do they slide Marvin to the 4 or Hayward to the 4 and go small. Corbin never adjusts to the mismatches and he rarely goes to anyone else in the post other than his big men. You had Jason Kidd guarding Hayward, you had Marvin Williams guarding Smith. Either of those two players could have caused problems in the post on offense when it was clear that Big Al had no intention of fighting for position in the low post. Where was a cross screen on the low block to get better post up position? Where were the back screens and back cuts to combat against pressure being applied on the perimeter? What is going on with the Jazz offense in these games it's terrible. I feel like I'm going back in time whenever I watch a Jazz game. We are like a one trick pony.
What is Corbin's love affair with Earl Watson? The Jazz point guard play and decision making has been terrible against the above teams and pretty much all season. The Jazz fire up bad shot, after bad shot in these kind of games and look completely lost on offense. Really you could make an argument that outside of Tinsley, the Jazz have had no point guard play at all this year. Burks has done OK in spot up duty, however, the Jazz didn't even play him at point guard during the summer league to prepare him for the upcoming season. Again this one goes on Corbin who obviously couldn't coexist with Devin Harris even with his better point guard play down the stretch run last year.
You can add this point guard mess onto the front office as well who obviously couldn't even see that LA had Mo playing the two and shooting 3's instead of playing point guard. I can't help but wonder how a three guard line up of Harris, Mo and Burks would do speed wise. Throw in Favors at center and Hayward at the four and let the Favors dunk fest begin......maybe in an alternate universe some where but not here. Lastly, where exactly was the vision of what this team was supposed to be? a pound it down your throw team? not with Mo playing the point.......I'm just not clear on what we are exactly trying to accomplish with this team? Win and develop? play games that matter? This is a cluster any way you look at it and it's embarrassing especially on national TV!!!!!
If the national TV guys can see whats going on, then why can't the Jazz front office? What are your impressions of this mess Jazz fans??
