Like most Jazz fans, I'm anxiously awaiting our management to secure our point guard of the future to add to the rest of our young team. I have to admit, I'm a draft junkie and do far more research on guys who will probably never make it in the league than I should. I just wanted to share my thoughts about our options and will give my solution at the end of the post.
There have been a few posts about the available free agent pg's this off season. As far as free agents go, I dont mind Mo. He is an acceptable starting pg in the leauge and I think he'll be back, despite his reputation on this blog. #MOLO! Truth be told, I think guys like Mo, Calderon, Jack, and Harris are all available, but are middle of the pack starting pg's in this league. No matter who management goes with, they will be a temporary solution for the next year or two. Would I rather see Calderon running the offense than Mo? Sure, but I don't see that happening. Would I be excited if the Jazz pried Teague away from Atlanta, of course. He is probably the best young free agent available, but the Jazz will have to overpay which doesn't make any sense. So Im just accepting the fact that Mo will be back.
And now the draft. Obviously Trey Burk is the prize pg in the draft, but the Jazz don't have the assets to move up to get him without giving up Favors, Kanter, or Hayward. I don't think he'll come in the league hot like Irving and Lillard, but within two years he'll be a legit starter. Unless the lottery gods smile down on us, I think it's time to put the Trey dreams to rest. I do like a number of other pg's in the draft, but I don't believe the rest of the pack will be ready to contribute for at least 2-3 years. I like Carter-Williams a lot and think he is the second best pg in the draft, so I hope he falls to the Jazz. When i watch McCollum play, all I see is a younger Randy Foye. No thanks. I do like Myck Kabongo and Dennis Schroeder a lot as well, but they will both need a LOT of work before they are ready to lead a team. Either way, the jazz are going to select a pg with one of their picks, and I feel pretty confident that they will find the one that fits our system.
Free agents are slim, and we won't get Burk in the draft, so here is what I am hoping for. The Jazz select the best pg available in the draft. I am praying that Chris Paul resigns with the Clippers because the solution to our problems I believe is still Eric Bledsoe. He is young, super athletic, and an excellent defender. In my opinion, he is everything we want in a pg in this nba environment. Is he pass first? Not really, but I believe he is a game changer and would mix in with our young guys perfectly. Once the Clippers lock up Paul, they will certainly want to get some value for Bledsoe before be walks. I believe the some mixture of picks, Marvin's expiring contract, Mo Williams if we resign him, and Burkes should be able to get us Bledsoe. The reason I think this is the best route for us is that we will have a pg who is ready to lead a team right now. We would have a young pg from the draft who we are developing, and hopefully keep Tinsley around to help mentor.
