Alec Burks - Minutes and Expectations

Alec Burks tends to be a bit of a sore point here at SLCDunk. The majority of us (if not all) feel he has been under-utilized. Personally, I agree that Burks deserved more playing time than he was given. However, I didn't want to assume that Burks would automatically be given a larger role on another team solely because of his draft position. I started digging into other late-lottery guards. I went back 15 years and found every player drafted between picks 10 and 14 (inclusive) that was listed as playing guard at some point during his first 3 seasons. The table below shows their minutes, MPG, and games played/started, sorted by second season minutes per game. I also took note of where they are now and any special achievements. (An asterisk (*) in the notes indicates that the player is still on his rookie contract)

Things to note:

  • Burks is below average on minutes per game during his second season. HOWEVER, he is right at the median for the same stat.
  • 11 of the 29 players drafted in this range are no longer in the NBA, and one more spent time playing in China before signing with his current NBA team
  • Joe Johnson is the only all-star and only all-NBA player on this list

As I built this table I realized that I really needed to temper my expectations of Burks. As I looked at the names on this table (other than Burks) I see mostly rotation players. Even Joe Johnson, the only all-star, isn't that great when looking at advanced stats (16.3 PER, .096 WS/48 for his career). If I'm building a team and want four foundational players to build upon, I don't know if I'd choose any of these players as one of them.

Granted, Burks may be different. He may end up being the second all-star on this table. He may also be in the same class as JJ Redick or Ronnie Brewer. This next season, I think, will show us a lot more about what to expect from Burks than the previous two. The Jazz are being rebuilt, and Burks' role will most likely change. I'm hoping he shows us that he's better than his peers, but I'm no longer expecting it.
