I really like the trade with Golden State. I know that some people don't and others like it but feel like we paid too much for it. But I like it.
I like that we gave up very little in this trade. I like it because the first round picks have no protection. I like the draft years of the picks. I like that we got two 2nd round picks. I like it because Golden State has no depth. I like it because Golden State is historically mediocre. I like it because Golden State has young coach. I like that the Warriors owe us.
This pick cost us Kevin Murphy and the opportunity to sign other players (the $20+M had to be paid anyway). I am convinced watching what the Jazz have done that we weren't planning on bringing back Millsap, Foye, DMC or any body who would get in the way of starting our young guys. If the Jazz really wanted Millsap they could have brought him back another way (signed him before the trade went through or cleared cap by trading Burks). So I don't really think that this trade cost the Jazz Millsap. He was gone anyway, maybe he wanted a guaranteed starting spot, or maybe he already decided to go to Atlanta before the trade. Sad to see him go. The Jazz do give up the chance to take on bad contracts from another team but I don't think the reward for doing it would be any better.
People have said that we paid almost twice as much as a 21st pick in the first round should cost but the 21st pick is closer to the floor of the pick than the ceiling. Because it is unprotected it could be #1. The same goes for the 2017 pick. Because the picks aren't protected they have a huge potential to be good.
2014 is a good time to have an extra 1st round pick. Anything we can do to move up that draft will be good and we should have good assets to allow us to move up. I like 2017 even better. 1st it gives us a chance to really see what we have in our young core and then have pieces to build around what we have.
I like the two second round picks. Remember a 2nd round pick and $ is how we got Gobert. We have drafted really well in the 2nd round in the past few years. We will have 7 shots at finding a 2nd round gem in the next 4 years. We can also use the picks as an asset to package and move up in the draft.
I think the 2014 pick has a good potential to be higher than the 21 pick in the draft. The Warriors have no depth at point guard and big man (Festus Ezeli is injured, no Jack, no Landry). Their starting point guard and center both have had a very significant history of injuries. Really, if I had to bet on Bogut's back and Curry's ankle I would do it every day of the week. Depth (Ezeli, Jack, Landry) > Iggy in my book.
As far as the pick in 2017 goes I like that we have an unprotected future pick from a team as poorly managed as the Warriors. It's like the Knicks pick all over again. I won't bet against the Lakers being good but I will against the Warriors.
I like that the Warriors have a young coach. Good coaches can make average teams better. I like that Jackson hasn't shown the ability to do that. If their main players get hurt don't think he can get the remainder of the team play above themselves. I like that he hasn't learned that yet.
I like that the Warriors owe us. They may not have broken the rules by tanking but they were in the wrong. It will come back to them. They owe us a lottery pick.
So yeah, I am excited.
