Let's assume that regardless of how bad we finish the season this year that the best pick we will end up with in this draft is the 6th pick. It's easy to dream that when we land a star this offseason that we are on our way to a championship, the fact is with Burke, Burks, Clark, Hayward, Favors, Evans, Kanter and Gobert returning, we only have Hayward with much NBA game time experience. Before looking forward to a championship, we need to improve our defense. We also need to get a couple of efficient scorers to help take the load off of Hayward. It makes sense to me to find guys that can score and work to improve defense as a team, rather than find defensive guys hoping they can score.
As of right now we are projected to have the 5th, 23rd and 35th picks. Remember, I predict Utah has unfortunate "luck" and ends up with the 6th pick. The consensus on most drafts boards have the following players listed as the top 6 (in no particular order) Joel Embiid (C) Jabari Parker (SF) Andrew Wiggins (SF) Julius Randle (PF) Dante Exum (PG) Marcus Smart (PG)
Based on the guys we have returning, we are thin at PG and SF, so Embiid and Randle become the least desirable additions. Since we have such a young team going forward, adding 3 new draft picks doesn't make much sense either. I would try to package the 23rd and 35th picks in exchange for a team like Memphis or Atlanta's 14th pick. With the 6th and 14th pick, I believe we could add some exciting talent to our young core and hopefully peak the interest of some valuable role players from the free agency pool this summer.
If the board was clear of 5 of the 6 players mentioned above, who would be the best player to pair with him (based on team needs) with the 14th pick?
If Parker or Wiggins were still on the board at 6 we could fill a need at (SF) depth and target the best (PG) available at 14, but who? Tyler Ennis, Andrew Harrison?? I feel that unless we were able to pair Smart or Exum with Burke at (PG), it would be wise to target the best scoring free agent floor general we could get.
If we took Embiid, Randle, Exum or Smart at 6, I would target the best (SF) available. Enter Doug McDermott, Jerami Grant, Kyle Anderson or Glen Robinson III.
If we are not able to trade our picks to move up, I'm crossing my fingers that McAdoo is still on the board with the 35th selection
