Ranking NBA Starters - UPDATE

So I wrote a fanpost before the season began where I ranked each of the projected starters in the NBA. A couple of people thought it would be interesting to see that list updated mid-season, so I complied.

To qualify for the list a player had to have been the starter for at least 35 games this season by the time I pulled the stats, which is why you won't see Westbrook or Kobe on the list (or many Lakers at all for that matter). Positions were determined by where they played the majority of their time according to Basketball-reference's advanced play-by-play numbers (which is why Monta Ellis is listed as a PG while Calderon is a SG). A few of the stats are a little out of date since I pulled them over the all-star break, but I don't expect them to have changed too much. Finally, I have them listed in my preferred order, but I've listed their average rank according to the three metrics listed. I won't bother to list reasons why I've moved some players, but feel free to ask me if you want my justification.

Just a couple of thoughts to close:

  • There are a lot of fantastic power forwards right now, but almost every other position has one or two elite players before there is a big drop.
  • As Jazz fans, we know that Trey Burke has vastly improved our team, but he's not having a very good season statistically. He ranks in the bottom 5 in all three statistics, and is dead last in WS/48.
  • Since I know some of you are wondering, Alec Burks would have an average rank of 11.7, placing him right above Gordon Hayward in the SG list. I would personally place him right below Hayward. (Though ideally Gordon would be on the SF list and it wouldn't matter)
  • Enes Kanter would have an average rank of 25.3, which is second to last, right above Kendrick Perkins. He's bottom three in WS/48 and Simple rating, and bottom 7 in PER. Basically, he's not having the best season.
