Hi guys. I'm a closet Jazz fan and I've been following SLC Dunk for about 2 years now. I've wanted to start fan posts earlier in the season, but a hectic work/life means I couldn't find the energy when it comes down to it. (Insert bad joke about the Jazz and 4th quarter here). Today, I finally felt compelled to join the fray!
First off, a self introduction. I'm a Jazz fan from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. That's pretty weird, right? All but one of my friends knows I'm a Jazz fan. Incidentally, he is the only one who cares about basketball. Why am I a Jazz fan? Well, every Jazz fan has a fandom story.
I spent my boyhood in Taiwan, where basketball is super popular. My older brother and I were best friends growing up, and we insisted on being a pair in playground pick-up games. Boys always emulate their idols, so we emulated the most dynamic of duos, Stockton-Malone! We started watching Jazz games and researched their basketball plays; Jazz basketball was beautiful at that time and we became fans. Another, more Freudian reason; our father is a Michael Jordan fan, and the second Bulls 3-peat coincided with our rebellious phase. We cheered for the Jazz, and there were some pretty intense heckling matches during the '97 and '98 finals.
My basketball interest dwindled when I went to university, but I did keep track during the Deron era. It was not until the 2012 finals, the Heat-Thunder series, that I was interested in NBA again. (Secret confession: I cheered for Steve Nash and Lakers last season, the Jazz was too boring to watch...) This year though, I was excited by the young dudes on the roster, and have fully resumed my Jazz fandom.
I'll be following up this post with some thoughts on the Jazz coaching situation.
