Building a team

There were some threads a few days ago about building a hall of fame dream team using a $15 budget and certain players had certain dollar values. Someone later posted a similar thing with an all-Jazz roster to choose from, and in that comment thread someone mentioned another variation of the game - building a 5-man roster using the following formula:

You are allowed one hall of fame player (for the purposes of this exercise, active players who are sure-fire hall of famers, like Kobe, LeBron, Durant, Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, CP3, Dwight, etc count as hall of fame players).

You are allowed one all star player (3-point and dunk contests do not count as all star appearances, but all star reserve appearances do count).

You are allowed one starter who has never been voted to an all star game (and who is also not in the hall of fame as a player).

You are allowed one reserve player (a reserve player is a player who primarily came off the bench during their prime years - so players like Jamal Crawford and Manu Ginobili do not count as reserve players in this case, since they spent their prime years starting for the most part).

You are allowed one d-league or fringe d-league player.

Players are not confined to their "regular" positions, so you could have LeBron at PG if you really wanted to.

Here are some of the best 5-man rosters I was able to come up with after playing around with this:

PG: Ian Clark (fringe d-league player)

SG: Bruce Bowen (starter)

SF: LeBron James (hall of famer)

PF: Kevin McHale (reserve – yes, he came off the bench)

C: Bill Lambier (all star)

This team has some pretty nasty defense inside and out.

PG: Steve Kerr (reserve)

SG: Gordon Hayward (starter)

SF: LeBron James (hall of famer)

PF: Chris Webber (all star)

C: Rudy Gobert (fringe d-league player)

OMG THE PASSING ON THIS TEAM WITH LEBRON, HAYWARD, AND WEBBER!

PG: George Hill (starter)

SG: Othyus Jeffers (d-league)

SF: LeBron James (hof)

PF: Kevin McHale (reserve)

C: Joakim Noah (all star)

Good length, good perimeter shooting, huge front line.

PG: Steve Kerr (reserve)

SG: Othyus Jeffers (d-league)

SF: LeBron James (hof)

PF: Horace Grant (all star)

C: Marcus Camby (starter)

I don't like this one as much as the others, although Kerr and Grant just flat-out win.

PG: Ian Clark (d-league)

SG: Michael Jordan (hof)

SF: Gordon Hayward or Bruce Bowen (starter, couldn't really decide between the two)

PF: Chris Webber (all star)

C: Kevin McHale (reserve)

With MJ and Webber being the #1 and #2 options, I think Hayward could do some serious damage as the 3rd/4th option. It actually might be a better idea to put McHale at power forward and put an all star at center - someone like Lambier.

I'd love to see some of the rosters you guys can come up with.

Maybe we can even vote what the best roster would be (and even open it up to a 9- or 10-man roster, adding an extra spot for everything except HOF).
