JuMu's Juju (Post-Draft Edition): Looking at the Jazz Roster for Next Season

Holy Smokes! What a night!

I didn't think that I would be feeling even more optimistic after this draft compared to last draft, but I definitely am!

Dante Exum.

Rodney Hood.

We have them both on the team now!

If you told me that an hour before the draft, I would assume that the Jazz would have had to trade 1 of the F5 or a future first rounder to move in a position to get these players. But we did not even have to, they slipped right into our laps.

Let's take a look at what our roster is shaping to be this fall (assuming we have Hayward still).

Salary Outlook:

2014/2015

Derrick Favors

12,833,333

Gordon Hayward

12,000,000**

Enes Kanter

5,694,674

Dante Exum

3,500,000

Alec Burks

3,034,356

Trey Burke

2,548,560

Jeremy Evans

1,794,871

John Lucas III

1,600,000*

Rodney Hood

1,250,000

Rudy Gobert

1,127,400

Diante Garrett

915,243*

Ian Clark

816,482*

Total

34,281,586

Cap Space

28,918,414

Space Before Tax

42,718,414

*= Non-guaranteed contract

**=Projected guess that Hayward gets about $12MM per year offer

Wow, now that we have Exum and Hood, I am in love with our roster situation (Having Coach Q as our new coach doesn't hurt my optimism either).

The Salary Cap is projected to increase to about $62.3 MM next season due to excellent revenue generated by the league last season, Luxury Tax level is also projected to increase by about $5 MM to $77 MM.

Hayward's max contract offer would look to be about $15-$15.5MM per season for 4 seasons. I doubt any team offers this as I see that his value remained stale after this season due to his perceived ceiling being exposed. My guess, which is what you see in table is that a team (Phoenix or Boston perhaps) offers him a 4-year $48 Million contract. Jazz should match as they have all the cap space in the world right on a team that is rarely in the discussion for attracting top free agents anyway. So this is the smart choice.

There are 3 non-guaranteed contracts in JL3, Garrett, and Clark totalling about $3.3 MM. I feel like 1 of these 3 won't be back come this fall.

Assuming Hayward returns we have 12 of the minimum 13 roster spots filled, with $28 MM + in cap space, we could very well sign a max player still (but we shouldn't). This gives the team plenty of breathing room in signing extensions with Burks and Kanter hopefully somewhere between $6 MM and $10 MM each. This will allow for the team to remain flexible for upcoming seasons in free agency as well.

Depth Chart Outlook:

Guards: Burke, Burks, Exum, Garrett, Clark, JL3

Wings: Hayward, Hood

Bigs: Favors, Kanter, Gobert, Evans

Looks to me that the Jazz will be searching for at least 1 more wing during the offseason. They may very well bring Marvin Williams for the mid-level (about $5 MM) to come off the bench.

Determining who should get how many minutes is a bit premature at this point, but I'm going to take a crack at it anyways for how the playing time should look by the end of the season.

That's my attempt. Leave below in the comments what you would like to see as the rotations this season.

The Jazz future is looking up! Coach's Q being a defense and development oriented coach will hopefully pan out great as we see our young core (7 players under 23 years of age!) start taking their next steps to dominant starters.

Keep it real Jazz fans!
