What? It's dusty in here. Quit looking at me like that. Like you've never cried at a coach retiring after 35 years of abject death glares. As strange as yesterday was, it will pale in comparison to how bizarre it will be if Sloan were to coach elsewhere. Even his time on the Bulls seems like some strange out-of-place idea from another universe. To see him elsewhere next season would be mistifying. That said, any team that is looking for a new head coach this summer is going to be making a lot of very loud calls should Sloan decide he's up for one more rodeo somewhere else. Seriously. It's like "Steel Magnolias" in here.

The last time I was around Jerry Sloan for any length of time was back in September, at the Hall of Fame ceremonies in Springfield, Mass., where some NBA types were sharing a few tables at the Marriott Hotel bar. Jerry likes bars, which is something he has in common, of course, with a hundred million other males and females. He liked bars even better years ago when he spent far too many hours in them, drinking away the losses -- and the wins, too -- a man addicted to late nights, beer and cigarettes.

My favorite Sloan interaction happened last year when the Jazz visited the Verizon Center. It just happened to be the day before his 68th birthday, and a reporter decided to ask him about how he felt: “Coach, tomorrow you turn 68. How do you feel?” the reporter asked. “I feel with my fingers,” Sloan deadpanned.

Let’s Not Be Sad For Jerry Sloan – The No-Look Pass
So really... while Coach Sloan IS a Utah Jazz institution... let's not wonder and lament on why he exited. Coach Sloan finally gets to go home and enjoy life without much worry. Maybe someday, he'll return. And if he doesn't, that's okay. So what if he never won an NBA championship? So what if he never won Coach of the Year? We all know what he's done for the Jazz and he got his guys to play hard every single time. And he has done more than enough for the game of basketball and he deserves to have this break more than anybody. It's like finally seeing your dad retire and tell war stories to all the kids that talk to him.
