NBA Draft NBA Free Agency: The Long and short of the last three Utah Jazz seasons

USA TODAY Sports

The Utah Jazz just added Trey Burke, Rudy Gobert, and Raul Neto to the team. While they haven't signed their contracts yet this takes our roster for the last three seasons (+ draft) to a robust 32 players. We have some on contract, but we have a lot of cap space and roster spots to fill.

We seem to go Draft crazy here, and partly that's because there are so many things to evaluate. These are new guys, so there are new things to find out. With the free agents many of them have been kicking around for a while, they lose their allure. That said, it's fun to try to look at our team and team history in a side-by-side way.

Here you'll find tables that show each player divided first by class (point guards, wings, and bigmen); and then their age and experience level. I've also added the info from their draft combines (and other events where this type of data is measured). It's interesting to see. It's also incomplete data. And all of the data that is known is not shown (for example, Fes has a 9'5 standing reach, Rudy has a 9'7 -- a new record). I'd love to have more complete data for AK-47 and Elevator Evans, personally. I will try to find that data.

Anyway, here are the point guards:

3 Mo Williams 30 10 1 1 Point 6 0.75 6 1.00 6 5.50 -- -- -- --
4 Devin Harris 30 9 1 Point 6 1.75 6 3.00 6 7.50 11 3.50 3.19 11.03
5 Deron Williams 29 8 1 1 Point 6 1.75 6 3.00 6 6.25 11 1.00 3.25 10.83
6 Blake Ahearn 29 3 1 Point 6 1.25 6 2.00 6 4.75 -- -- -- --
7 Jerel McNeal 26 1 1 Point 6 1.50 6 3.00 6 7.25 11 4.00 3.25 10.61
8 Raul Neto 21 0 1 Point 6 0.50 6 2.00 6 4.00 10 7.50 3.16 10.96
9 Trey Burke 20 0 1 Point 5 11.75 6 1.00 6 5.50 11 2.00 3.16 11.20

The three guys with the most experience are the three guys that are all free agents for our team right now. They are also the farthest removed from these measurements. It's very awesome to notice that Burke and Neto are the fastest in a sprint, so hopefully we play more uptempo next year. They aren't that great when it comes to lateral quickness which helps in defense, but they aren't BAD either. Deron was a best / tank when he got momentum.

Devin deserves notice here as well as being super fast, and having a 6'7.5" wingspan.

I am excited to see what P3 can do with our guys; but just looking at apples to apples athletics back when they were all pre-draftees, the guys who are free agents right now for us weren't that great then. And it's been 10 years since then. I think we can see where some of our defensive problems start from.

Things get a little crazier with the wing players:

13 Travis Leslie 23 1 1 1 Wing 6 3.00 6 5.00 6 10.50 11 11.50 3.13 11.00

You may miss this, so let's start with it: Travis has a max reach (that's his reach + a two step run up on the jump) of 11 feet and 11.5 inches. He's almost at the 12 foot level, which is like the benchmark for athletic bigmen. That's fantastic for a 6'3 player in socks. Moving on from Leslie (who is one of the fastest guys too!), we see that Josh and Marvin have crazy wingspans (over 7'), and that Alec and DeMarre have pretty crazy ones too! (6'10 each) They all have displayed good defense at times over their careers, and part of that is their size and length.

I'd really like to see AK's numbers though -- never injured rookie AK would kill these things.

As for free agents, well, I think we don't need Raja back, though with him goes a lot of experience. I had a soft spot for the versatile Kyle Weaver, but he never caught on. I would resign Travis Leslie. That's a no-brainer for me. I'd love to have Randy back too, but I think he goes to a contender.

Onwards, to the bigmen!

10 Rudy Gobert 21 0 1 Big 7 0.50 7 2.00 7 8.50 12 0.00 3.57 12.85

It is true, I remember at the combine watching Gobert closely, and in the head to head conditioning drills he was getting killed. He's officially a guy with the speed and mobility of a steam ship. He can't jump that much either (9'7 standing reach, only a 12' max reach . . . when Travis is only half an inch from that). He's tall though. And has a 7'8.5" wingspan. That's not bad. Not bad at all.

Our two fastest (north - south) guys are Favors and Kanter, and they look to run and finish in transition. Learning from Karl Malone I am sure this point will be hammered home, which will translate to hopefully more hammer dunks in our future.

Memo and Frank are not even in the league, so don't expect them back. Big Al and Paul will probably go -- but their bodies are on the downside of their careers. If we're going lean this year it's hard to say "no" to Fes as a 5th big at $0.8 mill though. At the very least, we'll have the craziest front court ever. Which is probably why it will never, ever, happen.

Oh yeah, Jeremy Evans is hitting 12'7 at P3 right now. They and Malone really need to work with our entire team, but I think Gobert can really benefit.

That's pretty much the long and short of the 32 guys we've had in Jazz uniforms lately. The obvious upgrades we need were at PG, and we look to have that with these two young, short-ish, speedsters. Our bigs are super big now. The wing may continue to be our Achilles heel, but that's why I like Marvin's length, and the potential athletic finishing ability of Burks, free agent Leslie, and the under-rated athleticism of Hayward.

Also vintage Andrei would be better than everyone put together. Oh, and he just opted out of his contract.
